Brockham
Badgers FC is to celebrate its silver jubilee - and the 2006 World
Cup - by launching a major new football tournament for the southern
counties.
Over 140 teams, 1200 young players and 2500 spectators
are expected to descend onto the Big Field over the weekend of 17-18
June for two days of football in the picturesque shadow of the North
Downs.
The Brockham Badgers World Cup 6-a-side Tournament will
be an open event for clubs throughout Sussex and Surrey. There will
be eight boys age groups, from Under 8s to Under 15s. Brockham is
also keen to help the development of girls' football in the region,
so the Tournament will also include four girls age groups - U10s,
U12s, U14s and U16s.
Brockham Badgers FC was formed 25 years
ago and has since swelled to become one of the largest youth football
clubs in the area. More than 300 boys and girls currently play
and train in the club's distinctive black-and-white striped kit each
week.
The World Cup Tournament will be a fun way to mark both
the Club's anniversary and the events in Germany. It is one of the
Badgers' most ambitious projects to date. The aim is to make it an
annual event that becomes recognised as a landmark tournament in the
region.
The event has already
gained strong support. Pizza Express are the main event sponsors,
whilst assistance is also being provided by UnumProvident, Premier
Sports and Woking Print and Publicity. Umbro has donated more than
140 footballs, so that each team that takes part can award its own
"player of the tournament" match ball.
Additionally, the community
teams from both Chelsea FC and Fulham FC will be in official attendance
– providing off-pitch entertainment in the form of “Beat The Keeper”
and “Speed Ball” competitions.
Any club in the southern counties
wishing to take part is urged to register as soon as possible.
