Steyning Strikers
0 - 7 Brockham Badgers U14a (President's Cup
QF)
Report by Gordon Walker
Ever had a game where everything goes
right? Brockham probably haven’t - but this was about as close as
it gets. The result puts the U14As into the semi-final of the Cup,
having scored the best seven goals they are likely to get this
season.
One point separates Brockham and Steyning in the league
and, over the past few seasons, every encounter has been extremely
close. However, unluckily for Strikers, Brockham had a full team
available for the first time this season and, consequently, played
with the confidence that has sometimes been lacking.
The first
goal would have made goal-of-the-month on Match of the Day. Andrew
Miller, on the edge of the six-yard box, let a long Alex Spooner throw
go over his left shoulder and, as he spun, he hit the ball on
the volley into the goal off the under side of the bar. The second
goal came following a free kick by Theo Mizzi from just within his
own half, which was headed home by Jonathan Ellis from twelve
yards out, after he cleverly lost his marker. The third was a
shot-cum-cross from Martin Merrit outside the box, that looped
over the keeper into the far corner of the goal. The fourth followed
yet more good work from Merritt, supplying a cross that was well met
and converted by Jamie Pellman.
Straight after half time, a breakaway
by Alex Spooner, combining with Michael Shaw and Martin Merrit, culminated
in a good finish by Callum Purcell to make it 5-0. The sixth followed
when Purcell crossed from the other wing and Miller completed
with a looped shot. Finally, an absolute peach of a shot by Purcell,
driven from the left just outside the box, rifled into the bottom
right-hand corner for a seventh.
The 7-0 scoreline didn't flatter
Brockham, because they played extremely well and deserved every goal.
However, Steyning may feel slightly aggrieved since they didn’t play
badly and created a number of chances - although these were dealt
with by the Brockham defence and, in particular, the consistent James
Davies. It was simply one of those days when everything
went well for Brockham.
Was this a fluke result or have the
U14As begun to realise their potential? Perhaps we’ll know the answer
next week when we meet Steyning Strikers in the league - same time
and same place.

Roffey Robins Rockets (U14 Plate Round 1)
AFC Wimbledon
4 - 2 Brockham Badgers U13a (Surrey County
Cup)
Report by Graham Mackrell
With the U13As facing their stiffest
test in their young careers to date, AFC proved too strong if not
a little fortunate in this last 16 Surrey County Cup clash.
After
getting an early lead with a well taken goal and dominating the opening
part of the game, AFC looked well on-course for the quarter finals.
However, Brockham pushed forwards and, but for a little more luck,
a thundering shot from Thurgood might have found the net.
Having kept
the strong West Surrey Elite league team to a one goal lead at
half-time, hopes were high that there could be a way back into the
match for Brockham - but such hopes were dented when AFC made
it 2-0 after five minutes of the second half. Still, the Badgers fought
back strongly and pulled a goal back as McDonald floated the ball
over the keeper from the edge of the box.
Game on. The Badgers
pressed on in search of the equaliser. Higgins had a near post
header drift across the face of the goal before the game's turning
point; Mackrell when through on goal and appeared to be brought down
in the box. The referee signalled corner, only for the linesman to
say goal kick. Brockham pushed forwards again and it was clear
that the next goal would be crucial. Unfortunately for the Badgers, it
was AFC who scored - on the break against the run of play. But
that's football!
With minutes left it was 4-1, before man-of-the-match
Andy Higgins popped up to knock home a Holland corner and make the
final score 4-2.
The boys can be really proud of their
performance. They battled hard and were a credit to themselves and
Brockham Badgers FC in their biggest game so far. Hopefully, they
can now concentrate on maintaining their unbeaten league form for
the remainder of the season.
Horsham Sparrows
3 - 0 Brockham Badgers U13b (U13 Plate Round
1)
Report by Chris Thomas
Yet another occasion when the boys played
the better football, but allowed the game to get away from them -
mainly through bad luck, mixed in with a bit of “failing to defend
as a team”. There were the usual solid performances from Parker, van
Acoleyen, Bangs, Sourris and Thomas. Robins and Goddard were
a threat going forward and Mackrell was as tireless as ever without
benefiting from any luck whatsoever.
Next week, the small matter
of avenging the 13-0 opening day defeat by Chiddingfold.
Brockham Badgers U12a 0 - 4
Maidenbower Youth (Frank Giess Memorial Trophy QF)
Brockham,
last year's finalists, suffered cruelly at the hands of Maidenbower
and were made to pay for making some mistakes when it mattered.
Having beaten Maidenbower 2-1 away in the league, only a couple
of weeks back, everyone knew the enormity of the task facing them.
Manager Wright, sent the boys out and, whilst never in total command,
they looked comfortable as they battled out for midfield supremacy.
The Badgers could have taken the lead as a Clarke header, from a Smith
cross, went agonisingly across the face of the goal. As the first
half entered stoppage time, with both managers looking to the break,
Maidenbower took the lead by heading home from close range.
Into
the second half, the Badgers again failed to close Maidenbower down
on the edge of the box and they made it 2-0 within two minutes of
the restart. Brockham fought back and pushed forwards trying
desperately to get back in the game but, despite some good work from
midfield, the final ball never materialised. With five minutes
to go, Maidenbower added a third and then, with the help of a
large deflection, made it 4-0.

Badgers U11a 4 - 4 Ashington Cougars
(aet - Ashington win on penalties) (Heron Way Cup QF)
The
U11As came mightily close to knocking out Ashington Cougars in the
quarter finals of the league cup. Ashington finally went through on
penalties after an epic contest which could not be settled even with
extra time. In their best performance of the season, the Badgers pushed
their higher league opponents all the way, and may even have gone
through had it not been for some bad luck at crucial moments. The whole team played well, with Jack Hunt and Stephen Kehl leading
the way with strong performances, while keeper Henry Warne made a
definite contender for save of the season by somehow turning
a goal bound volley over the bar.
It was Brockham who
took the lead in the first half when Mitchell Ward scored and, soon
after, Aaron Clark made it 2-0 from close range. But Ashington
came back strongly and levelled at 2-2 in a really fine contest between
the two sides.
The Badgers once more took the lead as Badgers
midfielders Henry Hill, Dylan Peters and Jonathan Walton competed
well, with defenders Hunt, Maxim Harper, Dominic Nicholls and
Alex Postles protecting the keeper Warne. However, Ashington first
levelled and then took a 4-3 lead through two cracking goals
and, as the game entered its final minute, they looked to be
heading for victory.
Brockham pushed forward with Will Bennett,
Ward and Kehl all having chances, and earned a corner in one
last gasp attempt to save the tie. As the ref indicated the
corner would be the last action of the game, Kehl swung in a fine
delivery which deceived the Ashington keeper and sailed directly into
the net for a dramatic and well-deserved equaliser.
Extra
time followed without a goal, so it was down to penalties. Unfortunately
Brockham lost out in the shoot-out, despite the valiant efforts
of Henry Warne in goal, but the narrow defeat could not take away
a the fact that this was a great performance by the Badgers that bodes
well for the remainder of the season.
Cranleigh Tigers
10 - 0 Brockham Badgers U11 (Black) (U11 Plate
Round 1)
Report by Bryan Bletso
Cranleigh Tigers, lying fourth
in the top league, gained a comprehensive victory in the
U11 Plate. Despite the heavy defeat, Brockham's U11 (Black) team turned
in a good performance against a side three divisions above them. Indeed,
the scoreline did not really tell the full story as the Badgers kept
going to the final whistle and showed real character playing a team
that had also scored eight goals in their last A-league fixture.
Going
behind in the first minute of the tie was not ideal, but the Badgers
stuck to their task, faced with some awesome play by Cranleigh's two
main strikers who finished almost every clear cut chance that fell
their way - despite a man-of-the-match display by the impressive Brockham
keeper, George Corfield. His determined performance showed the extent
of the progress he has made this season.
It was not all one-way
traffic, as the Badgers had a lot of possession, forcing a fair
few corners and hitting the post, but the large pitch and some fine
attacking play from Cranleigh proved too much. Special mentions
go to Sam Norkett, Toby Dowle and George Corfield, all of whom suffered
injuries in the course of a full-blooded game - whilst Robbie
Ventham, Matthew Gill, David Atkinson, Thomas Bletso, Oliver Curtis
and Henry Smith did not look out of place in the company of the
A-league side.
Brockham Badgers U10a 2 - 4
West Ewell Wanderers
Report by Simon Winter
The U10As kicked off
their season back in September with a comfortable 2-0 win at West
Ewell - but the return was to provide ample revenge for the visitors,
who achieved a 4-2 victory without ever really taking a grip on the
match.
It was Brockham who enjoyed the lion’s share of possession,
with Alex Nicholson in good form at the back and, at one point early
in the first half, they won six corners in succession, but failed
to capitalise. From the sixth corner, on sixteen minutes, West Ewell
raced clear to score with their first real attack. The Badgers'
response was swift; William Mahoney showing great persistence to equalise
only two minutes later. However, Wanderers regained the lead just
before the break, with Brockham failing to close down their opponents.
Badgers
remained confident and, six minutes into the second half, lad-of-the-match
Mahoney sent in an excellent cross which Bertie Edwards-Hedges dispatched
high into the net. At this point, the money would have been on a Brockham
victory as they continued to control the game but, on the day, their
passing was too imprecise and their tackling lacked the usual commitment,
whilst the visitors’ defence was more solid. Within two minutes, West
Ewell had broken away to carve through the Brockham defence and score
their third. The Badgers now had to go for broke and, from the restart,
Edwards-Hedges was desperately unlucky to see his shot hit the post
but, as Brockham pushed more men forward and became exposed at the
back, Wanderers were able to break once more and add a fourth in the
final minute.
Brockham Lad of the Match: William Mahoney
– a battling performance and a hand in both goals.
