Upper Beeding   1 - 5   Brockham Badgers U13b
Report by Chris Thomas

An excellent performance after last week’s disappointing defeat. Coach Bangs marshalled his resources well. The slightly adjusted defence looked solid with Dunleavy back in goal. Thomas looked good at left back and Goddard was a constant threat going forward. Despite going a goal down against the run of play, the boys were strong and equalised just before half time after a superb run/cross/shot/goal from the ever reliable duo of Parker and Mackrell.

Some early jitters in the second half were calmed by tenacious defending and the Badgers took the lead for the first time on 43 minutes, when Mackrell was tripped in the area and Goddard confidently stepped up to convert the penalty.

From here on in, it was one way traffic. Lloyd and Thorpe both made a big impact coming on as subs and their scrapping created a chancel for Mackrell, who scored with a superb strike. This was followed quickly by an equally good goal from Robins. Mackrell scored another with five minutes left - his umpteenth hatrick of the season. More goals could have followed, but 5-1 was a nice and deserved Christmas present for this very hard working team.

Badgers lad-of-the-match Mitchell Ward notched up five goals in this convincing win.

Ward scored his first early on as he started in an unaccustomed left wing position. Will Bennett made it 2-0 soon after.  A further two goals from Ward meant the game was heading Badgers way at half-time, but Horsham ralied well in the opening period of the second half and Brockham were pushed back for long stretches.  But the defenders Jack Hunt at left back and Dylan Peters at centre back withstood the pressure well and the Brockham keeper Henry Warne was forced into few saves, despite Horsham's possession.

Brockham wrapped the game up with ten minutes to go in fine style. Hunt played the ball out to Stephen Kehl, who beat his man and sent in an accurate cross for Ward to finish first time on the volley.

Badgers were able to play with more freedom after that and a further goal from Ward along with a close range effort from Kehl finished a good morning's work for Brockham, ensuring the year has ended on a high note for the U11s.

On the Big Field...the U12Bs on the defensive (top left) and pressing forward (top right and bottom) but it was the vistors who made the most of their chances.

The annual Lads v Dads (and Mums) clash is settled by a penalty that the ref ordered to be retaken twice. Ho ho ho!.
