Brockham Badgers U16   4 - 0   Storrington Vipers   (Edwin Hill Cup QF)
Brockham Badgers U15   1 - 2  Maidenbower Colts   (aet)  (Fred Sparkes Cup R2)

There was disappointment for the U15s, who came within a minute of knocking out opponents from a higher division before eventually succumbing late in extra time.

With Maidenbower Colts playing in the Horsham U15 'A' League, it was always going to be a tough game for Brockham - but, with strong defending by both sides, the first half finished goalless. After the interval, both sides had chances, but it took until the 65th minute to break the deadlock. A great run into the box by Simon Merriken ended with Brockham being awarded a penalty. Sam Spall converted the spot kick.

East Grinsted Town   1 - 3   Brockham Badgers U12a  (Roffey Robins Fred Giess Cup R2)

Brockham Badgers U12b   1 - 9   Roffey Robins United   (Roffey Robins Fred Giess Cup R2)
Brockham Badgers U11a   4 - 0   Balcombe Raiders   (Heron Way Cup R2)

Badgers ran out comfortable winners in this U11 league cup game, with two goals in each half enough to secure their place in the next round.  Balcombe competed throughout, but once Brockham had raced into a 2-0 lead midway through the first half, the outcome of the game was really beyond doubt.

The Badgers opened the scoring on five minutes, courtesy of a Will Bennett goal, with Aaron Clark making it two-nil.  Brockham had the best of the remaider of the first-half and played good flowing football, but found the Balcombe keeper in outstanding form.

Two more goals in the second-half, through Mitchell Ward and a scrambled effort from Ryan Winter, completed the scoring.  The Badgers distribution and defending was first class, with coach Ian Kehl giving the lad-of-the-match award to Maxim Harper for some good passing out of defence.

Royal United   4 - 3   Brockham Badgers U11 (White)   (U11 Plate)

Greenway   2 - 3   Brockham Badgers U11 (Black)   (Friendly)

As neither side had a league or cup game, Badgers U11 (Black) played a friendly at Greenway - and avenged their last minute defeat at the hands of the same opponents two weeks ago. They also gained their second back-to-back win after last week's 6-1 victory over Horsham Tigers.

The game was played over three thirty-minute periods. In the first period, Badgers raced into a deserved 2-0 lead with some of the best football they have played this season.  A fine Alex Marshall corner was chested down in the box and slotted across the keeper into the corner of the goal by captain Thomas Bletso, then Henry Smith grabbed his eleventh goal of the season with a good lobbed effort.

Greenway pulled a goal back in the second period, but a good run by Marshall resulted in his second double in consecutive weeks, to make it 3-1.  Sweeper Matthew Gill played well behind defenders Robbie Ventham, David Atkinson, lad-of-the-match Tom Kinsey and George Heymann, restricting Greenway to long range efforts. When called into action, keeper George Corfield played with his normal reliability.  Brockham might have grabbed a fourth when Gill hit the bar but, in the event, it was Greenway who reduced the arrears late on - although by that stage the game was won.

Brockham Badgers U10a   0 - 1   South Park
Report by Simon Winter

The U10As unbeaten run finally came to an end in disappointing fashion, going down 0-1 at home to South Park A, despite enjoying a majority of the possession. Brockham’s approach play was generally very good but the moves often broke down in the final third. South Park have only conceded four goals all season, which indicates how well organised their defence is.

The first half showed the teams to be quite evenly matched, although Brockham looked the more dangerous going forward, especially on the left flank. Matthew Higgins was once again very strong at the back, as was William Mahoney on the right of midfield, while Oli Winter’s distribution from the middle was good. However, half time arrived without either keeper having had a difficult save to make.

The stalemate continued until ten minutes into the second-half, when a speculative lob from the halfway line caught the Badgers’ keeper Michael Ellis off his line and earnt South Park a surprising lead. After this, the pressure was almost constant on the visitors’ goal, as Brockham took control of the midfield. Harry Morland in particular showed excellent technique and some fine passing. The last ten minutes saw a string of chances fly the wrong side of the South Park goalposts, and George Coffey came desperately close on several occasions. However, it was not to be the Badgers’ day as they failed to score for the first time this season in the league.

Hook Youth   0 - 4   Brockham Badgers U10b
Report by Trevor Reaveley

After a very scrappy start, the U10Bs began to settle down to the task in hand after last week’s loss.

The first real chance came to Brockham when a Hook defender handled in the area and a penalty was awarded. Joshua Brown stepped up to take but the Hook keeper was up to the shot. However, Liam Ratcliffe was quick off the mark for the rebound and scored the first goal.

Another good move involving Ratcliffe, Daniel Hetzel and Thomas Moriarty ended with the Hook goalkeeper coming out to smother the ball before a shot could be taken. Soon after, a good cross by Brown was flicked on by Ratcliffe into the path of Thomas Moriarty who neatly slotted home for the Badgers' second.

With Brockham gaining confidence, the half ended with a goalmouth scramble and a clearance for Hook to attack, in which Edward Newman did one of his ‘last man tackles’ to put the ball out for a throw.

The second half started with Ratcliffe on a solo run and finishing superbly with a shot from the edge of the area. Brockham’s fourth goal came from half-time substitute Daniel Crook, who scored following a lovely run and cross by Moriarty.

There were more chances. Crook had a good attempt cleared off the line and Thomas Moriarty skimmed the top of the crossbar. At the other end, Brockham goalkeeper Mathew Batts was having little to do due to some very good defending from the regular pairing of Newman and Harry Kensett, who was managing to fit in some fine upfield runs. But any footballing skills were put to one side as the rest of the game was played out as a midfield battle, with no real chances falling to either team and Brockham Badgers coming away deserved winners by four goals.

Brockham Badgers U9 (White)   5 - 1   Brockham Badgers U9 (Red)
With Brockham fielding two equal-strength teams in the Tadworth U9 League 'A', this was the first local derby of the season. It was given an extra edge by the fact both teams really needed the win - with the Reds looking for their first points of the season and the Whites keen to show that their mauling last time out was only a one-off hiccup.

Both sides fielded strong attacking line-ups. The Reds' forward line of Alastair Masson and Luke Brightman, supported by Ashley Marshall, passes well and is always a threat. For the Whites, coach Jason Rabbetts reverted to the formation that served well for much of last season, with Daniel Mahony in the centre, Sam Lloyd on the right wing and an ever-improving Cameron Boychuk on the left.

It was the Whites who hit their stride fastest. The first goal came after just a few minutes as Daniel tapped in from close range when the Reds' defence failed to clear a goalmouth scramble. The Reds reacted well, launching attacks of their own that built well from the back. With the Whites' defence also showing some initial hesitancy, it was not long before the equaliser came. A powerful clearance by Whites' captain James Rabbetts, struck the Reds' Ashley Mashall and rocketed back into the net.

Having sat back a little, the Whites stepped up a gear and soon regained the lead. Daniel Mahony cut in from the right for a low shot and, despite an excellent stop by Reds' keeper Cameron Wallis, he couldn't keep out Daniel's second attempt on the rebound. Two more Whites' goals followed - both from Cameron Boychuk. The first came from another goalmouth scramble; the second was the best of the match, following a three-man move. Daniel crossed low from the right to Sam Lloyd in the centre of the box. He squared it across the area to Cameron who was unmarked on the left and calmly struck the ball firmly into the bottom left-hand corner.

Derby day - as the U9 (Whites) take on the U9 (Reds) in the Tadworth League.

To their credit, despite being 4-1 down and now playing uphill, the Reds came out from the half-time break as the stronger of the two teams. For the first five minutes they mounted numerous attacks and, but for some heroics by the Whites' keeper Jamie Luckins, they could have clawed themselves back into the game. However, against the run of play, Sam Lloyd struck a superb fifth for the Whites, with an unstoppable shot into the near top corner from the tightest of angles. The goal understandably knocked the Reds out of their stride, although they still had another flurry of attempts on goal - only to be thwarted by the Whites' player-of-the-week, goalie Jamie Luckins, with an astonishing and instinctive double save at point blank range.

The Whites' defence was also now holding firm. Henry Livett, Ben Hounsfield and Tom Charman showed good concentration. Archie Knight and Charlie Clark, who came on as late defensive substitutes for their Badgers' debuts, were also both assured and skilled. James Rabbetts, the Whites' box-to-box midfielder, was composed throughout, breaking up the Reds' attacks and launching new raids for his team.

So, the derby honours went, on this occasion, to the Whites. But the Reds can consider themselves unfortunate that they came up against a team so eager to prove a point - and it will surely only be a matter of time before they get their first points on the board.

Brockham Badgers U9 (Blue)   5 - 0   Holmbury Wolves
The U9 (Blues) get into their stride and record their biggest league win for two seasons.

Coming up to half way through the season now and the boys are starting to show some very good team spirit, playing for each other rather than solo glory. They are starting to know each other's game, strengths and weaknesses, and adjust accordingly. When substitutions are made so everyone can get a game, the newcomer slots into the roll and instantly looks like part of the team.

There’s still a lot of work to be done, especially on the ‘killer’ finish but for commitment to each other, the end result and teamwork, there can’t be any complaints.

NPL Youth    4 - 1   Brockham Badgers U10c
Report by Duncan Hanwell

The U10Cs suffered their first away defeat of the season, losing 4-1 at the hands of the League leaders NPL Youth.

After an evenly contested start, Brockham almost took the lead as Tim Hines burst through the NPL defence, only to see the goalkeeper pull off a fine save at the foot of the post. Minutes later, a cheeky backheel by new boy Andrew Watson set up Hines again, but he dragged his shot wide from inside the box.

NPL played some good football and a series of attacks ended in the only goal of the first-half, which squeezed out of Simon Watson’s hands and trickled over the line.

The second half began with a free kick whistling into the top corner as NPL took control of the game. Two further goals were added from defensive errors, but it could have been more had Daniel Hall not made a number of excellent clearances. But the Badgers kept going, and Axel Davies got a consolation goal with the last kick of the match as he tapped the ball into the open net, following a fine shot from Hines.

Lad-of-the-Match: Daniel Hall - for his positioning and the quality of his tackles and clearances.

Brockham then stood tall and held onto the lead right until the 89th minute when Maidenbower cleared a corner right upfield to their centre forward. He was tracked by two Brockham defenders and forced out to the right hand side of the box, but still managed to squeeze the ball into the far corner of the net for a heart-breaking equaliser.

In extra time, Brockham held strong and might have regained the lead when one-on-one with the Maidenbower keeper, who pulled off a fine save to keep the scores level. Then, in the final minutes of the second period, the visitors sneaked a winner.

So, Brockham U15s can consider themselves unlucky to have gone out of the cup, but can take pride in another strong team performance.
A courageous Cup performance - but last minute disappointment for the U15s.

The U9 (Blues) hosted Holmbury Wolves, looking to build on last win.

The first-half kicked off with the Badgers playing downhill into a low sun and they applied early pressure from the moment the whistle blew. Within a minute, Luc Jhugroo saw his shot narrowly miss and there followed another shot by George Fenwick which hit the post. There was more Brockham pressure as Christopher Walton came out of defence to create another attack, which was broken up by Holmbury. The Wolves pushed forward to cause a defensive error by the Badgers, but Christopher Walton came back from attack to clear up.

After some open play, a long pass from Thomas Hampshire in defence found the feet of Nathan Hughes, whose shot was felt by the back of the net. From the kick-off, Holmbury pushed forward for an equaliser but, after some frantic defending, the Badgers managed to clear the ball safely into Holmbury's half. A poor kick from the Holmbury keeper gifted Nathan Hughes a shot on goal and he promptly scored his second of the match. He got his hat-trick after a period of good movement by Brockham. Alex Thomas managed to break Holmbury's defence and laid off a pass to Nathan, who slotted it in for 3-0.

Three minutes remained of the first half, with the Badgers continuing to apply even more pressure. After some good passing starting from the Badgers defence,Nathan Hughes again watched his shot go into the back of the net, to take his - and the U9 (Blues) tally to four, In the final minute of the half, Holmbury pushed forward and had a good shot on goal, only to find Lucas Fidgett's safe hands.

The second half kicked off with one change, as Charlie Dunleavy replaced George Fenwick. Holmbury also made changes and applied good pressure, creating an early corner which was cleared by the Badgers.

Brockham finally regained their form and started pushing players forward to see numerous shots blocked by Holmbury's defence. Tom Hampshire was supplying his team with some pin-point passes from the back, one of which found Charlie Dunleavy whose shot from outside of the goal area went narrowly past the post.

A weak clearance by Holmbury's keeper was picked up by Luc Jhugroo, who pushed forward to score his first goal of the season. But even at 5-0 down, Holmbury continued to fight back and threatened the Brockham goal. In the final ten minutes, Ben Butterworth came on for Alex Thomas and made a three-man defence for the Badgers to ensure a clean sheet.

With a final score of 5-0 and the U9 (Blues) now topping the Tadworth League 'B' table, all credit must go to the boys for turning in a real team performance.
