Brockham
Badgers U16 1 - 0 Horsham Sparrows
Cranleigh
Lions 2 - 9 Brockham Badgers U15
A beautiful
football morning in Cranleigh. Brockham changed shirts because
of a clash with Cranleigh's blue and white, and just three minutes
in, Nathen Owen gave us a great start with out first goal. With
some great defending, we kept the lead for ten minutes when Cranleigh
equalised. Just a minute later and Sam Spall made a great run at goal and
was clearly fouled in the box. The penalty taken by Nathen Owen
was well-placed to make it 2-1 to Brockham.
After fifteen minutes,
Sam again battled hard to win the ball back from the Cranleigh defence
and scored with a great shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Cranleigh were defending hard, but creating few chances of their own.
A few more near misses for Brockham brough the first half to an end.
The
second half started with a crucial save by Matt Hillson, from
which we counter-attacked and scored to amke it 4-1. Cranleigh then
pulled one back before Joe Burnard got a well-taken and
well-deserved goal to amke the score 5-2. Cranleigh pressed to get
back in the game but the Brockham defence stood tall. On 68 minutes
we broke quickly to notch a sixth, the seventh came on 70 minutes
and it was 8-2 on 75 minutes following another great strike by Sam
Spall.
Finally, in the last few minutes, central defender
Eddie Granville kept up his record of scoring in the last few minutes
of all our games and made it 9-2, following a great free kick
from Adam Davison.
A great team performance.

Surrey County Cup 1st
Round
Report by Graham Mackrell
The Badgers faced their first
ever County Cup game and for the second week running came from behind
to clinch their place in the second round. The Badgers unusually started
the stronger and, after four minutes, took the lead when Andrews
scored his first Brockham goal. Holland and Robins linked up
well on the right and provided the telling ball for Andrews to convert
from ten yards. Sugden, back in his usual right back role,
made a telling challenge when Coulsdon broke and Hardy was forced
to make a one-on-one save after 14 minutes. It was only a matter of
time before Coulsdon got the goal and, after 16 minutes, the equaliser
came and was converted clinically past Hardy. A goal
line clearance kept the scores level as Cousldon finished the
first-half the stronger.
The Badgers started the second-half stronger
and had a number of chances to score but, after one hit the post,
Coulsdon ran the length of the field on the counter to make it 2-1 with
15 minutes played. The Badgers changed formation and brought on another
striker in search of the equaliser, which came with five minutes to
go as Mackrell (C) crossed for Andrews to make it 2-2 with a deft
touch. Coulsdon nearly clinched it with the final kick of the normal
time, but an inspired Hardy kept out the near post shot
to push the game into extra time.
The Badgers quickly killed
the game, when Andrews completed his hat-trick by turning and firing
high over the keeper into the top corner. Holland soon made it
4-2 with a cross shot and the game was won, Cousldon
had a couple of opportunities but some resolute defending and a little
luck kept the ball out. Big man Harvey made it 5-2 as he
headed home from another Holland cross to confirm Brockham's place
in the second round.
Lad of Match Andrews - superb finishing
for a well-taken hat trick.
East Grinstead Town 1
- 1 Brockham Badgers U13b
Report by Chris Thomas
The Badgers
came away with a creditable draw from a game they deserved to win.
A lively start resulted in early chances at both ends with Dunleavy
making an excellent reaction save on five minutes after a corner and
a goal mouth scramble. Just a minute later Knowles was unlucky with
a shot which he couldn’t quite get full power on. The Badgers continued
to press and an excellent through ball by Lloyd saw Mackrell closed
down by three defenders as he about to fire in a shot from
just inside the area. Immediately afterwards, a great solo run from
Knowles resulted in a great cross which the Badgers attack just failed
to connect with. East Grinstead responded with some pressure of their
own but the Badgers defence and goalkeeper held firm until a superb
Knowles ball relieved the pressure and set Owen on his way onto a
ball he just failed to reach. The Badgers finished the half strongly
and were unlucky to be still level.
It was all Badgers in the early
part of the second half with Mackrell at the centre of things – his
run was smothered on 36 mins, his shot blocked on 37 and his through
ball resulted in a good shot from Knowles on 40. Immediately afterwards,
a smart throw from Brightman found Parker who capped a strong performance
with a wonderful weaving run, beating three defenders, and a great
shot into the corner of the net. Badgers deservedly 1-0 up. The boys
continued to control the game and protect their lead well until a
very unfortunate penalty was conceded on 49 minutes. Dunleavy could
do nothing to stop the well-taken spot kick and it was now 1-1.
The
Badgers threw everything forward in order to regain the lead they
deserved. Goddard and Van Acoleyen pushed forward to add potency to
the attack, but a packed East Grinstead defence held out and the home
side could have stolen the game themselves with a breakaway goal,
had it not been for Dunleavy’s superb save in the last minute.
A good
defensive performance from the boys and, with a little more luck up
front, this might have been a comfortable win. However, given the
start to the season, this was another solid performance. Well done.
Cranleigh Sharks 2 - 2 Brockham
Badgers U12a
Brockham Badgers U12b 0 - 4 Cranleigh
Cobras
Broadbridge
Heath 3 - 2 Brockham Badgers U11a
Badgers suffered
their first defeat of the season, going down to a last minute goal
at Broadbridge Heath.
The U11As had gone into the game
on the back of two comfortable wins and it seemed they would notch
their third successive victory as they took a 1-0 lead at half time,
courtesy of a fine first goal of the season by Aaron Clark; but two
scrappy goals from Broadbridge Heath put Brockham on the back foot
and, combined with some physical play from the home side, this seemed
to knock Badgers off their stride.
However, the boys showed good resilience
to keep playing on and got thier reward four minutes from time
when Stephen Kehl scored to make it 2-2. It looked like Badgers
would go on to earn at least a point, if not claim all three;
but in the very last minute, despite the valiant attempts of lad of
the match and Brockham keeper Henry Warne, Broadbridge Heath forced
the ball home for a third scrappy goal - Warne suffering an injury
in the process. So, a first defeat for the A side, but a character
building experience that will provide valuable learning going
forward.

Bookham Colts 0 - 3
Brockham Badgers U10a
Brockham continued the excellent start to the
season with another emphatic away win, their third in succession.
The game started with Bookham forcing the pace and bringing an early
save from Badgers’ keeper Michael Ellis, flinging himself low to his
right, With their tall striker and imposing goalkeeper, Bookham provided
intimidating opposition but Brockham were soon into their stride and
George Coffey had a couple of good early efforts to round off some
impressive passing moves.
Badgers took the lead when Bertie
Edwards-Hedges found Oliver Winter on the edge of the box, his confident
first time shot finding the top corner of the net. Bookham tried to
exert some pressure, but from a swift break out of defence Coffey
played a clever ball on to Winter, whose cross from the left squirmed
under the Bookham keeper to make it 2-0. Brockham were flying now
and, from the re-start, the excellent Angus Hodge hit a ferocious
drive onto the bar.
Looking Up! U10As record a third straight
win and go joint top of the League.

The second half continued
in the same vein with Coffey unlucky to hit a post for the second
time in the match, but Bookham pressed hard in an effort to get back
into the match. Invariably, they found Brockham resolute in defence.
Alex Nicholson was first to every ball and keeper Ellis always well
positioned. Eventually, Edwards-Hedges put the result beyond doubt
with an expert header from a well-flighted Harry Morland corner.
Lad
of the Match: Angus Hodge.
A battling performance
from the U10Bs earned a 2-0 victory over Carshalton Saints.

West Byfleet Scorpions
2 - 2 Brockham Badgers U10c
Report by Duncan Hanwell
Weakened
by the absence of three players, Brockham Badgers travelled to West
Byfleet without any substitutes, but turned in a spirited display
to fight back from 2-0 down and claim a well-deserved point.
From
the kick-off, the Badgers midfield of Hines, Hanwell and Davies took
control and moved the ball around well. Persistent pressure went unrewarded
in the first half as Brockham forced a number of corners, without
being able to find the finishing touch.
The second half started
with a break-away goal for the Scorpions against the run of play.
As Brockham searched for the equaliser, a number of opportunities
were spurned or well defended by the Scorpions, before another break-away,
ended in a second goal for the home team.
Instead of tiring,
the Badgers dug deeper to find that elusive first goal, and it eventually
came from Axel Davies who twisted and turned through the Scorpions
defence before sliding the ball over the line. Brockham surged
forward in waves, with some excellent triangular moves, with both
Davies and Hines coming close. As the game approached the final few
minutes, Tim Hines was rewarded for his efforts by looping the ball
into the far corner of the net, to the dismay of the brave Scorpions
defence.
At 2-2, and with time fast running out, the Badgers
still went for the winner, but the referee blew up to end another
highly entertaining and well-contested match.
A dry, bright day greeted Carshalton Saints at
the Badgers' home ground. They came with the reputation of being a
good footballing team, having beaten our victors of last week, Hook
and Southborough, in a previous encounter.
The scene was set for an
entertaining game, with Brockham Badgers needing to prove themselves
after their earlier defeat by H&S. The Saints proved themselves
to be skilful when, in the opening 10 minutes, they laid siege to
Brockham's goal. Some good passing between their midfield cut through
the Badgers time and time again, with shots being well saved by our
goalkeeper, Mathew Batts, or defended by the regular rearguard of
Harry Kensett and Edward Newman. It seemed only a matter of time before
the Saints netted a chance.
After this initial onslaught, the Brockham
midfield of Joshua Brown, William Bletso and Liam Ratcliffe, were
gaining more possession and starting to create chances for striker
Daniel Hetzel. One particular move, involving all of the players,
saw Hetzel's shot saved brilliantly by the Saints' keeper.
Both Bletso
and defender Kensett had long shots well stopped by the goalkeeper
and, in the meantime, Carshalton were keeping our defenders busy.
It was now end-to-end football and very entertaining for the
spectators, who were becoming more vocal with each subsequent attack.
Just
before half time, a clearance by Newman fell to the feet of Ratcliffe,
who fired a low cross into the area. It was delicately touched
on by Bletso to the far post, where Hetzel was waiting to slot home.
One more attack with Brown and Bletso teaming up brought us to
half time.
Badgers fielded the same team for the second half and, as
in the first, Carshalton came out with all guns blazing. The Saints
left midfielder put in an excellent cross and a good header sailed
through the defence into the well-positioned arms of goalkeeper Batts.
A long kick out set Bletso underway, only for the shot to go wide.
The
game was very evenly matched, with Newman getting in some good last
man tackles and the other defender, Kensett, making progress up the
wing to set up new attacks.
Both teams were having a very hard
game and tiredness was starting to set in. Substitutions were made
by both sides. The Badgers replaced Bletso and Hetzel with Tom Moriarty
and Daniel Crook. A Kensett clearance into the path of Brown
started another attack. The two new substitutes teamed up to good
effect when Brown passed to Moriarty out on the left wing, and he then
crossed an inch-perfect ball to Crook, who controlled with one touch
and shot superbly into the top corner. This contender for goal
of the season brought out the emotional side of the crowd who, for
both teams, were in excellent spirits.
Ratcliffe, who had
been having an very good game, then came off to be replaced by Daniel
Baty. There was no mistaking the enthusiasm of the three new boys
on the pitch as they all battled well for the ball and kept Carshalton at
bay. With only a couple of minutes left, the Saints were still on
the attack. At one point it was three-on-one, with Newman getting
in the crucial last-man tackle before setting Baty off on a midfield
run. He passed to Crook who saw his long range effort skim over
the angle of the crossbar. The end of the game was played out at no
less a pace with good, solid teamwork from both sides denying any
more real chances on goal.
The end of a very hard match saw Brockham
Badgers take the points, but credit must also go to both teams whose
footballing skills, as opposed to physical challenges, made it entertaining
for all onlookers.
It was
a case of "how did we lose that one" as U11 (Black) dominated
the game against their visitors, only to see a catalogue of missed
opportunities and fine opposition goal keeping deny Badgers.
Brockham had looked well in control, before a Southwater shot from
the edge of the box took a wicked deflection off a Badgers boot
to loop over keeper George Corfield. Brockham pressed for the
remainder of the first half, with Oliver Curtis and Toby Dowle going
close, while Matthew Gill also had a shot narrowly go wide.
Just before half time, Southwater broke free to make it 2-0, but Badgers
upped the pressure after the break and virtually camped in the
opposition half. Alex Marshall, Thomas Bletso and Gill maintained
a midfield grip on the gap, while defenders David Atkinson, Robbie
Ventham and James Morgan dealt comfortably with the Southwater attackers.
But Badgers morning was summed up when a Gill shot hit the post, only
for Southwater to break and have their only second-half shot on target make
it 3-0.
Immediately, Badgers pulled a goal back through lad-of-the-match
Henry Smith and, for the final twenty minutes, Brockham laid siege
to the Southwater goal with the opposition seemingly incapable of
getting out of their half, but somehow the visitors held on to claim
victory.
For the second game iin succession, U11 (Black) have
played well in defeat and, if the same spirit and attitude is shown
for the remainder of the season, more wins will surely follow.
Brockham
Badgers U11(White) 3 - 8 Balcombe Raiders
Brockham
started off with a very positive attitude when, after only thirty
seconds, Ben Stokoe shot low and hard just inches wide of the post.
Stokoe was rewarded within a minute with a fine goal, after a good
series of passes from the defence. Brockham held on to their lead
until the tenth minute, when Balcombe managed to penetrate the solid
defence of Joe Stradling, Bill Rowland, Harry Roberts and lad-of-the-match
Callum Tilling.
Balcombe then took the lead after a quick break
in the eighteenth minute, when their forward skilfully chipped the
advancing first half keeper Daniel Hoad. Brockham continued to press
forward and were thwarted on several occasions by some fine saves
from the Balcombe keeper. However, Michael Carty was rewarded four
minutes later when he squared the match with his second attempt, after
the keeper had parried his first shot. Brockham’s George Duckworth,
Liam Doyle, Otto Young and Carty dominated the midfield for the remainder
of the first half and created some good chances for forwards Josh
Caldwell and Stokoe who were unlucky not to convert.
Balcombe took
the lead again four minutes into the second half with a superb headed
goal from a well taken corner, giving second half keeper Stokoe no
chance. Balcombe made it 5-2 with two quick breakaway goals
ten minutes later, as Brockham pushed to get back into the game. Hoad
got one back for Brockham with a fine individual effort, passing several
defenders before striking home. Rowlands, Caldwell and Hoad were thwarted
on several other occasions by the strong Balcombe keeper and defence.
Brockham continued to press forward to get back into the game but
were beaten on three more occasions on the counter attack, despite
some good solid tackling by Jamie Davidson, Stradling and Tilling,
and some fine saves by Stokoe. Despite a run of five consecutive corners
by Brockham they still could not find the net. Overall, both teams
played well and the match was enjoyable to watch.
