Cranleigh Tigers   3   Brockham Badgers U12A   1   (Horsham and District League)

The U12As fell to a disappointing defeat at Cranleigh as the under par side struggled to come to terms with a narrow pitch.  After the recent high of reaching the League Cup Final, perhaps this was just the lesson Brockham's lads needed to make them realise that they cannot become complacent as the season draws to a close and the Final approaches.

An unfortunate own goal after ten minutes seemed to set the tone of the day and an uncharacteristic miss soon after by Ryan Winter after he had rounded the keeper compounded the sense that not all was right. A second goal for Cranleigh arrived just before half time.

It was an improved performance in the second half, with lad of the match Henry Warne on top form to prevent Badgers falling further behind. With Joe Parker and Henry Hill doing well to galvanise the side, Brockham had some hope.  Aaron Clark and Jack Hunt were also doing their best to lift the side, but things just wouldn't fall our way - for instance a great move involving Ben Stokoe, Stephen Kehl and Mitchell Ward saw Ward narrowly miss when a goal at that stage would have put Brockham right back in the game.

Cranleigh extended their lead with ten minutes to go, before a Kehl tap in from a corner gave Brockham a late consolation.

The U12As now play Broadbridge Heath away next Saturday before their Cup Final on 28 April against Ockley

Squad: Henry Warne, Jack Hunt, Maxim Harper, Alex Postles, Michael Carty, Aaron Clark, Dylan Peters, Joe Parker, Ben Stokoe, Ryan Winter, Matthew Gill, Stephen Kehl, Mitchell Ward
Brockham Badgers U12 (Black)   3   Twin Oaks   2   (Horsham and District League)

Report by Bryan Bletso

Top placed Brockham secured a narrow, if gripping, victory over second placed Twin Oaks to clinch promotion and set themselves up for the title if they avoid defeat in their final game of the season.

This was the twelfth successive league win for the U12 (Blacks), but Twin Oaks, who look likely to accompany Brockham in promotion, gave them their toughest game of the season. They proved to be sporting opponents and, in truth, the teams were so well matched that the result could have gone either way.

Both sides were aware that a win would make them favourites to win the league.  Brockham looked to have made the better start and a goal mouth scramble almost brought the opening goal, only to be denied by some heroic blocks and saves.  However, it was Twin Oaks who drew first blood - a weak goal kick saw the ball fall to a visitings striker who calmly lobbed it over the keeper and into the net.

Just before half time, Brockham equalised. David Atkinson set Ollie Legg on his way, Legg drove into the box and shot strongly from ten yards; the keeper was unable to divert the ball round the post despite getting his hand to it.

Twin Oaks had scored 94 goals in their fifteen game season to date, but defenders Tom Kinsey, Connor Mitchell, David Atkinson and Robbie Ventham were doing really well to keep them at bay. And with the wind behind them Brockham were gradually gaining the upper hand.  Ten minutes into the half, a good through ball from Thomas Bletso saw Toby Dowle pounce to make it 2-1 to Brockham. They thought they had added a third moments later, when William Bletso headed home Legg's cross from close range, but the effort was ruled out for off side.

Despite losing their goalkeeper who injured himself in a brave challenge with Bletso, Twin Oaks came back and put Brockham under a lot of pressure - but Alex Marshall with second half subs George Heymann, Max Ruff and James Morgan dug in well.  Just when it looked like Brockham would hold on, Twin Oaks equalised with ten minutes to go. Keeper George Corfield was unsighted as the defence failed to close down quickly enough on the edge of the area.

There was time for late drama though. Legg latched on to a through ball to round the keeper and score for 3-2. It was a goal of real composure with five minutes to go.

Marshall, Bletso, Mitchell and Atkinson were prominent in the last few minutes as Brockham saw out the remaining time to leave themselves on the verge of the title.

Squad: George Corfield, Tom Kinsey, Robbie Ventham, David Atkinson, Connor Mitchell, Thomas Bletso, Alex Marshall, Toby Dowle, Ollie Legg, William Bletso, Ollie Curtis subs - George Heymann, Max Ruff, James Morgan
A real six-pointer at the top of the Horsham D Division....and it was Brockham's U12 (Blacks) who came away celebrating the win and guaranteed promotion.

Brockham Badgers U12 (White)   1   Lingfield Youth   6   (Horsham and District League)

The U12 (Whites) played out a good fixture with runaway league leaders Lingfield, matching their high flying visitors for forty minutes before a late glut of goals saw Lingfield seal the points.

Brockham went into the game on the back of a big win in their last outing and the confidence was evident as they battled well in the first half.  Keeper Jack Whetnall was in confident form, with Ollie Smith and James Stone playing well to keep Lingfield at bay.  Brockham had half chances to take the lead - Douggie Baldwin, Josh Caldwell and Dan Hoad combining well on a number of occasions.  Lingfield eventually broke the deadlock with a 25 yard wonder strike and followed that with another long range effort just before the interval to give them a slightly flattering 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Brockham once more came out in determined mood. Daniel Ryan, Stefan Issberner, Jamie Davison and Callum Tilling did well while Otto Young, Giles Clark and Harry Roberts competed in midfield.  The late glut of four goals in the last fifteen minutes for Lingfield was perhaps harsh on the Badgers, but a consolation goal through Baldwin ended the game on a positive note for Brockham.

Brockham Badgers U10 Assassins   2   Horsley A   2   (Epsom and Ewell Mini League)
Report and Pictures by Paul Walton

The U10 Assassins showed good character to recover twice from going behind and draw against a quick and organised Horsley side.  Brockham were nervous and disjointed early on and allowed Horsley to take advantage of a strong wind. But through the match their game improved and, at the end, they were unlucky not to snatch victory.

The game was fast and furious from the start.  Horsley were ahead within thirty seconds. They forced a corner from the kick off and headed in unopposed at the far post.  Within a minute, Brockham were level. Felix Saro-Wiwa shot from distance and player of the week, William Pereira, was on hand to bundle in the rebound off the bar.

Within minutes the game swung firmly towards Horsley.  James Rabbetts was unable to convert a Brockham penalty and, at the other end, Horsley reacted sharpest after a corner to force the ball into the net.

But increasingly, Brockham started to look more comfortable on the ball and more solid in defence.  Felix Saro-Wiwa showed composure in midfield and passing became more reliable.  After the switch of ends, Brockham took advantage of the wind to press Horsley back and received their reward when Saro-Wiwa shot firmly into the bottom-right corner of the Horsley net.

Horsley were still threatening but for Brockham Cameron Boychuk, Saro-Wiwa and Pereira all went close and on another day they might well have secured the win.

For the supporters it was a pleasure to see two good sides demonstrating their skill and commitment and, in the end, a draw was a fair result.

Squad: Jamie Luckins, Tom Hampshire, Chris Walton, Luke Brightman, Cameron Boychuk, Sam Lloyd (c), James Rabbetts, Felix Saro-Wiwa, William Pereira.

Player of the Week: William Pereira

Holmbury Black   6   Brockham Badgers U9 (White)   0  (Tadworth League)
Report by Simon Haines

The U9 (Whites) started this game competing every step of the way with Holmbury, producing end-to-end football.  After about ten minutes a free kick for Brockham, taken by Tom Fedrick, went just wide and we could really have done with that goal to maintain our impetus.  Unfortunately this was followed by three quick goals for Holmbury, which knocked the boys back just a bit. Another two meant the first half ended at 5-0.

But credit to the Badgers, they started the second half afresh and continued to battle hard and create chances.  Even though Brockham were pressing hard and moving further and further up the pitch, Holmbury were restricted to just one more goal in the second half with Charlie Haines playing a holding role in defence and making some important challenges.

As it transpired this was the victory Holmbury needed to win the Tadworth 'B' League - making this a creditable performance from Brockham against the League Champions.  They continue to work hard and try to play football.

Star player: This week Charlie Haines gets this award.  Charlie is developing into a useful defender.  He made some decisive challenges in the second half as our last line of defence, keeping Holmbury to a single goal in the second half.  Well done all – keep trying, your endeavour will pay off in the end.

The final score didn't do justice to a courageous performance from the U12 (Whites) against the runaway league leaders

Brockham Badgers U11A   0   West Byfleet Scorpions   1   (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report by Simon Winter

With the league title safely in the bag, this was supposed to be a game when Badgers could relax a bit, play the ball around and showcase their talents against a team languishing in lower mid-table. However, the icy wind blowing across the Big Field was, in hindsight, a bad omen as an off-colour U11A team proceeded to lose their unbeaten league record.

The wind blew down the slope for the whole match, meaning that the team playing that way had a distinct double advantage. Brockham had this honour in the first half but failed to capitalise, too often allowing the ball to run away harmlessly out of play. Not that their hearts weren’t in it, they just lacked the imagination to break down a side who concede few goals. Poor Matthew Batts in the Badgers goal was not called upon to so much as touch the ball in the first half, such was Brockham's domination, but they failed to take the few chances they created.

They would regret this in the second period, as tired legs struggled to beat the slope and the bitter wind, although the game was still largely dominated by Brockham.  Ten minutes from time, a Badgers goal kick held up in the wind and a Byfleet player pounced on it, sending a firm lob over Batts from the edge of the box to steal a cruel victory.

The visitors’ joy at the final whistle was a backhanded compliment to the Badgers, who have become the side everyone aspires to beating this season. At least they have the chance for revenge in the away tie in three weeks' time.

Squad: Matthew Batts, Will Mahoney, Matt Higgins, Alex Nicholson, Ross Bangs, Josh Brown, Harry Morland, Oli Winter, Bertie Edwards-Hedges, George Coffey, William Bletso, Angus Hodge, Liam Ratcliffe, Daniel Hetzel.

Epsom & Ewell C   2   Brockham Badgers U10 Barbarians   1   (Epsom and Ewell Mini League)
Report by Jean Paul Jhugroo

The U10 Barbarians were looking to continue their unbeaten four-match run and take the game to Epsom. But, from the kick-off, Epsom came straight out of the traps. Their first attack caught Brockham's defence off guard, but a poor finish put an end to it. Brockham had hardly found their feet, when Epsom forced a corner. A perfect delivery to the back post was met by an unmarked player, whose header into the top corner put Epsom in the driving seat.

Badgers were pinned back into their own half. Then an opening created by George Gomes allowed Ali Masson a shot on goal, but unfortunately he found the side netting. Epsom took a quick goal kick and played some good one touch football through the midfield and then their striker, with work still to do, managed to score from a very tight angle.

After a period of stalemate, Brockham found their high tempo football. A move started from Ashley Marshall allowed Luc Jhugroo to be one-on-one with the keeper, but he was unable to keep his shot low and it went over the crossbar. Still, Brockham's confidence began to build. The move of the game was started by Ashley Marshall and Luc Jhugroo. They played a neat triangle to Lewis Wood, who went past several players and watched his shot hit the cross bar. Nathan Hughes followed up, but his attempt met the keeper's safe hands.

Moving in to the final moments of the first half, George Gomes clearance was met by Luc Jhugroo, whose shot was spilled into the path of Nathan Hughes, who slotted home his sixteenth goal of the season!

At 2-1 down, the Badgers started the second half attacking the game, passing the ball around with great composure. But Epsom did not take long to get back into the match and brought out some good saves from Cameron Wallis.

A mad challenge on Lewis Wood, led to Ashley Marshall's free kick which the keeper punched out to Ashley. His follow up was hard and low, but met by defenders. This spurred Brockham on and they continued to throw numbers forward, but stubborn defending stopped them finding the equaliser.

The final whistle went to the disappointment of the Badgers who clearly thought they were worth a share of the points.

Squad: Cameron Wallis, Luc Jhugroo, Lewis Wood, Ashley Marshall (c), Ali Masson, Nathan Hughes, Archie Knight, George Gomes, George Fenwick

Player of the Week: Luc Jhugroo - totally committed!
