Brockham Badgers U12A   5   Steyning Strikers   1   (Horsham and District League)

The U12As built on their semi final cup win last weekend with a good home win over Steyning Strikers in the league.

Steyning started the stronger, a long range effort sailing just over the bar after ten minutes, with Brockham keeper Henry Warne having to be alert to rush off his line and smother another good opportunity for Steyning soon after.  Brockham gained confidence as the half went on though and two quick fire goals gave the Badgers a half time lead.

First, on twenty minutes, Mitchell Ward used his pace to beat the keeper to a through ball, taking it round the keeper and making no mistake from close range.  Then top scorer Stephen Kehl got the first of his hatrick with a shot from the edge of the box that gave the keeper little chance.

Steyning were not out of the game, playing some nice passing football, but Brockham made the result safe early in the second half - Alex Postles' shot rebounded to Michael Carty who smashed the ball home from distance, for the third and best goal of the day.  It was soon 4-0 as Ryan Winter won the ball in midfield and fed Kehl who lashed home with the side of his foot.  Brockham were playing well at this stage, Henry Hill again commanding in central defence, and midfielders Dylan Peters, Aaron Clark, Joe Parker and Bill Rowlands controlling the middle of the pitch.

Steyning deservedly pulled a goal back ten minutes from time, but Badgers were the last on the score sheet as Kehl scored with five minutes to go for his second hat-trick in consecutive games.
North Holmwood Boys   1   Brockham Badgers U12 (White)   7   (Horsham and District League)

The U12 (Whites) travelled the short distance to local rivals North Holmwood and secured an excellent 7-1 win as they continued to build on good recent performances.  Making his debut for Brockham was James Stone, who did well in defence.

After an even opening ten minutes, Brockham gained the upper hand.  First Daniel Hoad made it 1-0 before Joshua Hook extended the lead.  Further goals from Otto Young and Dougie Baldwin saw Badgers gain control of the match, but North Holmwood reduced the arrears just before half time with a well worked goal to make it 4-1 at the interval.

Brockham came out with a positive attitude early in the second half, with Dan Hoad grabbing his second of the game, lad of the match Otto Young scoring again for 6-1 and Josh Caldwell getting onto the score sheet to wrap up the points mid way through the half.

North Holmwood though refused to give up, and finished strongly with Brockham unable to add to the score in the final ten minutes.

Squad: Jack Whetnall, Callum Tilling, Daniel Ryan, Josh Hook, James Stone, Otto Young, Ollie Smith, Dougie Baldwin, Josh Caldwell, Giles Clarke, Daniel Hoad, Stefan Issberner, Harry Roberts, Jamie Davidson.
Stanley Park Dynamos   1   Brockham Badgers U11A   5   (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report by David Hedges

The oldest football cliché, 'a game of two halves', was never more true than U11As match at Stanley Park on Saturday.

On a narrow pitch, Badgers started poorly and, despite the best efforts of Oli Winter and Harry Morland in midfield, they could not get into their stride. Stanley created the better scoring opportunities with Alex Nicholson and Matt Higgins having to make timely tackles and interceptions to keep them out. With their normal flowing football completely deserting them, they nearly went off at half time a goal behind - but a superb long range free kick from Stanley Park was well saved by Badgers' ever alert keeper Mathew Batts.

For the second week running, coach Simon (Sir Alex) Coffey had a few choice words during the break for most of his under performing team and Brockham came out for the second half looking far livelier, with Josh Brown making some decisive runs and Winter having to watch another long range effort go just wide. But still they did not look like the side who had all but clinched the league title.

Then, with forty minutes gone, Badgers lost the ball in the middle of the park and Stanley Park went straight through the heart of their defence to score the goal they had been threatening from the start. This turned out to be just the wake up call Brockham needed and from the restart they began to move the ball with speed and accuracy. A long range effort from Bertie Edwards-Hedges went close, followed seconds later by a goal keeping error that almost let William Bletso in for the equaliser.

Badgers were now in full flow and, when Stanley Park's keeper failed to hold on to a ball into the box, George Coffey pounced to make it 1-1. Another quick break down the right from man of the match Brown almost brought an immediate second - but Badgers didn't have to wait long. A strong, determined run from Morland put in Coffey for his second in as many minutes and Brockham were in front. With Badgers now running the game from midfield, it was only a matter of time before they added a third and it was Coffey who duly obliged, completing a well deserved hat trick with a superb long range strike.

Another long range effort from Edwards-Hedges found the net to make it 4-1 and solo runs from Brown and Edwards-Hedges again nearly added a fifth. The elusive fifth seemed to be Winter's but a 'save of the season' from the Stanley keeper managed to tip his fierce drive just round the post. With Badgers continuing to dominate it was not long before Bletso completed the scoring from a Morland corner.

At the end, a bewildered Stanley Park who had competed well for first forty minutes before taking the lead were left shell shocked, following a twenty minute purple patch that created five Brockham goals and numerous other chances. The result confirmed Badgers as Division One champions.

Squad: Matthew Batts, Will Mahoney, Matt Higgins, Alex Nicholson, Ross Bangs, Josh Brown, Harry Morland, Oli Winter, Bertie Edwards-Hedges, George Coffey, William Bletso, Angus Hodge, Ben Sawyers

Man of the Match: Josh Brown

Netherne Falcons B   2   Brockham Badgers U10 Assassins   5   (Epsom and Ewell Mini League)
Report and Pictures by Alison Walton

The U10 Assassins put in a committed performance to score a convincing victory over Netherne Falcons 'B' and stay top of the Epsom and Ewell League Division Two. Falcons took advantage of a nervous start by Brockham to score an early goal, but it was Badgers who went on to dominate the game and secure a deserved win.

It took only three minutes for the Falcons to win a corner and take advantage of a lapse in Brockham concentration, sending a rebounding ball into the net. They continued to pressure the Brockham goal, but found the defence of Tom Charman and Chris Walton holding firm. Although the Badgers were still struggling to find their form, Felix Saro-Wiwa continually challenged the Falcons’ defence with scything runs through the middle. It was not long before he had secured the lead for Brockham with two unstoppable goals.

Brockham then settled into their usual high tempo game, using the width of the pitch with proficient passing and good teamwork. Luke Brightman and Sam Lloyd sustained the pressure in attack, with a shot from Brightman just clearing the bar. Lloyd’s tenacity following a corner saw him turn the ball from the side of the goal into the net for 3-1.

Despite their dominance however, Brockham failed to close down a Falcons’ attack and went into the break with just a slender one goal advantage.

In the second half, Brockham continued with determination and pace. William Pereira made an incisive run from the middle and passed wide to James Rabbetts, whose clinical finishing from the left restored Brockham's two goal advantage. Player of the week Saro-Wiwa continued to dictate play from the midfield, Cameron Boychuk and Pereira repeatedly tested the Falcons’ defence, while defenders Chris Walton and Tom Hampshire ensured that Jamie Luckins had only one serious shot to save. Brockham’s persistence paid off when Pereira collected a long ball from Saro-Wiwa and scored the fifth Brockham goal.

Having expected a tougher match against a Falcons side that has only lost once in their last seven matches, manager Jason Rabbetts was delighted with the win and the way that the Badgers played. They need to continue their form next week when they meet Horsley, who are challenging for the top spot in the division.

Squad: Jamie Luckins, Tom Hampshire, Chris Walton, Tom Charman, Luke Brightman, Cameron Boychuk, Sam Lloyd (c), James Rabbetts, Felix Saro-Wiwa, William Pereira.

Player of the Week: Felix Saro-Wiwa

Stoneleigh Athletic   0   Brockham Badgers U10 Barbarians   1   (Epsom and Ewell Mini League)
Report by Jean Paul Jhugroo

After last week's victorious game, the U10 Barbarians were looking continue their good run of form and close in on the top three. Badgers had numerous injury problems which lead to reshuffle in the team.

From the start, Brockham could not get into their normal high tempo passing game. Stoneleigh were applying some good pressure but were met by solid defending from Archie Knight and Ali Masson. After some time of stalemate within the midfield, a move started by Ashley Marshall allowed in-form Lewis Wood to make a run against Stoneleigh's defence. However his low shot was blocked.

Further chances fell to Nathan Hughes, Lewis Wood and Cameron Boychuk, but Stoneleigh's defence and keeper were determined to keep a clean sheet. For Stoneleigh, a good kick from their keeper straight to the striker resulted in a high shot at goal, forcing a good save from Cameron Wallis.

Finally the breakthrough came. Cameron Boychuk's neat pass down the right wing allowed Lewis Wood to dribble past two defenders and shoot into the bottom right corner of the goal.

In the second half, Brockham continued to apply pressure; again the trio of Luc Jhugroo, Lewis Wood and Cameron Boychuck enabled Nathan Hughes to pull the trigger, but again it brought out some great saves.

The shot of the match came from a good run by Archie Knight up the left wing. He laid off a nice pass to Luc Jhugroo, whose curling shot was going into the top left corner of the net, but Stoneleigh's keeper managed to scramble across the goal and parry it out for corner.

Moving into the final minutes of the game and again another chance fell to Nathan Hughes, whose shot was just over the cross bar.

Team: Cameron Wallis, Luc Jhugroo, Lewis Wood, Ashley Marshall(c), Ali Masson, Nathan Hughes, Archie Knight, Cameron Boychuk

Player of the Week: Archie Knight - solid as rock.

Brockham Badgers U9 (Red)   1   Tadworth Lions   0  (Tadworth League)
Report by Tony Moriarty

With the Tadworth First Division title secure, two key players missing and another who bravely left his sickbed to bolster our numbers, this game against a tough Tadworth Lions teams was always going to be an uphill struggle. Sure enough, for the first ten minutes Brockham were always second to the ball and Tadworth must have sensed there were three points for the taking. Andrew Kensett (our keeper) made some fine stops as Tadworth poured forward looking for the opening goal - but couldn't quite get the break they deserved.

Eventually, the Badgers found their rhythm and Jack Stradling, having been picked out by Tom Killner's neat through pass, was unlucky to shoot over the net from close range as the ball bobbled awkwardly. Within five minutes though Jack made amends. His goal-bound free-kick from twenty five yards was abruptly blocked by the outstretched arm of a Tadworth defender. Penalty to Brockham. Jack stepped forward to coolly slot the ball home - placement not power giving our boys the lead.

The second half saw the Badgers gain more possession than in the first half. However the only real chance came as Adam Moriarty cut inside the Tadworth left back and unleashed a fierce shot from ten yards that only narrowly missed.

The final whistle brought the curtain down on the U9 (Red's) perfect league season - with the magnificent achievement of winning every game and gaining maximum points. Pretty amazing really!! I have been astonished at how well this group of eight and nine years olds have been able to keep focussed throughout the past seven months and, of course, play some stunning football. Congratulations to each and every one of them!

Thanks to the parents who have loyally cheered us on from the sidelines all season, whatever the weather. I know they have all enjoyed the boys' performances as much as I have.

With their league season now over, our U9 (Reds) have the Tadworth First Division Champions trophy presentation to look forward to, plus five Spring/Summer tournaments, including Brockham 07, which should be lots of fun!

Today's Star Player: Toby Hunt. Toby's battling, holding midfield display today kept us in the game. Well done (and thanks!).

After conceding an early goal, the U10 Assassins came back to record a convincing win over a strong Netherne Falcons side.

Brockham Badgers U12 (White)   8   Storrington & Sullington Vipers Utd   1
(Horsham and District League)
Report by Bryan Bletson

The U12 (Blacks) made it eleven straight league wins as they secured a good home victory over a courageous Storrington side.  The win sets top placed Brockham up for the championship decider at home to second placed Twin Oaks on Saturday 24th March.

The opening fifteen minutes were even as Storrington gave as good as they got and they could have taken the lead after a rare lapse in concentration in the Badgers defence. But a combination of Alex Ward and keeper George Corfield smothered the opportunity.

After a couple of half chances, Brockham took the lead through a great strike by Toby Dowle on the edge of the box.  After opening the scoring, Brockham seemed to get in their stride and goals from Ollie Curtis and Alex Marshall made it 3-0 at the interval.

Brockham were in control now with Robbie Ventham and Thomas Bletso keeping a vice like grip on the midfield, allowing strikers Henry Smith, Curtis and George Corfield, along with wingers Dowle and Marshall, the freedom to run at the visiting defence.  Central defender David Atkinson was increasingly influential, keeping his line well as well as coming forward with the ball.

Curtis grabbed two more goals early in the second half to make it 5-0, the prolific striker having now scored 37 goals this season.  George Corfield made it 6-0 and, after hitting the post with a great header from an Ollie Legg corner, Henry Smith deservedly got on the score sheet to make it 7-0.

The best Brockham goal was saved up for last as Bletso used his strength to surge into the Storrington box, the ball being cleared to Ventham whose shot from the edge of the area arrowed home past the diving keeper.

Storrington had not given up and, with the last kick of the game, scored a great consolation goal which gave second half keeper Connor Mitchell no chance.

Squad:  George Corfield, Sam Norkett, George Heymann, Connor Mitchell, David Atkinson, Robbie Ventham, Thomas Bletso (c), Alex Marshall, Ollie Legg, Ollie Curtis, Henry Smith, Max Ruff, Toby Dowle, Alex Ward
