Horsham Tigers   1   Brockham Badgers U12 (Black)   8   (Horsham and District League)
Report by Bryan Bletso

The U12 (Blacks) notched up their ninth consecutive league win with victory over a battling Horsham Tigers side.  As Horsham Council had again ruled that all their pitches were unplayable, the match was switched to the Big Field in accordance with current league guidelines designed to overcome the fixture backlog.

In fact, Horsham Tigers had been unable to play a home game since before Christmas, but showed little rustiness as they gave as good as they got in the opening exchanges of the match.  Indeed it was Tigers who took the lead after ten minutes, a midfielder latching on to the ball in the Brockham box and driving home from an acute angle.  Horsham could have doubled their advantage soon after, but a great clearance near the line by defender Connor Mitchell saw off the danger.

But the U12 (Blacks) are in confident mood at the moment and were creating chances, so it was no real surprise when they drew level through a good run and finish by Toby Dowle midway through the half.  This was the start of three goals in a five minute spell. Good work by striker Henry Smith saw Oliver Curtis presented with a close range shot, the in form striker making no mistake for his 33rd goal of the season. Then a free kick at the edge of the Horsham area saw Thomas Bletso knock the ball into the path of Ollie Legg, whose fierce drive made it 3-1 - albeit with the help of a deflection.

Horsham were still making a good game of it though, defenders David Atkinson, James Morgan, Alex Ward, Sam Norkett, Tom Kinsey and George Heymann combining to keep the Tigers at bay, and it wasnt until Legg's angled shot made it 4-1 early in the second half that the game was safe.

Brockham were now on top, with Alex Marshall commanding in the centre of midfield, and George Corfield proving a handful in attack.  A disallowed goal and a missed Bletso penalty reflected the Badgers' dominance before late goals from Curtis, Bletso, Legg for his hattrick, and Dowle made it 8-1. The result moves Brockham six points clear at the top of the Horsham and District 'D' Division, albeit having played two games more than second-placed Twin Oaks.

Epsom Eagles C   1   Brockham Badgers U10 Assassins   2   (Epsom and Ewell Mini League)
Report and Pictures by Paul Walton

Despite never hitting top form, the U10 Assassins showed great character to overcome a committed Epsom Eagles C side, after being a goal behind for most of the second half.  Brockham created many more chances than Epsom, but looked uncomfortable with the physical presence of the Epsom defence and lacked composure in front of goal until player of the week Sam Lloyd scored twice within five minutes.

Brockham were jittery right from the start, with passes often going astray and players running into trouble.  Fortunately, in defence, Chris Walton and Tom Charman were calm and effective, putting in strong tackles and clearing well.

Slowly the Brockham combinations started to work, especially on the left where good understanding between William Pereira and James Rabbetts allowed Rabbetts to deliver effective crosses. Felix Saro-Wiwa showed good control in the middle, and Walton often freed Luke Brightman on the right, but the team could not make the most of the chances that ensued.

At the other end, Epsom were making better use of their opportunities.  A minute before half time, only a fine save by Brockham keeper Jamie Luckins kept the score level.  But, just after half time, Epsom took the lead with a break down the right and a firm shot into the bottom left corner.

After several tactical adjustments by Brockham manager Jason Rabbetts, slowly the quality of the Brockham chances improved.  Saro-Wiwa hit the bar with a long-range shot and Sam Lloyd showed the benefit of hard work and persistence as he battled in the Epsom area, finally slipping the ball past the keeper to level the score.  Minutes later in a fast move down the right, Brightman passed inside to Lloyd who placed the ball in the bottom left corner.

Brockham relaxed and could have extended their winning margin.  A free kick from Rabbetts was pushed onto the post by the Epsom keeper. Just before the final whistle, another free kick by Rabbetts appeared to creep over the line before the keeper pushed it out, but the referee was unsighted and unable to award the goal.

If it is the sign of a good side that they can win without playing well, then the U10 Assassins are a good side.  But this was another match that shredded the nerves of the Brockham supporters!

Squad: Jamie Luckins, Tom Hampshire, Chris Walton, Tom Charman, Luke Brightman, Cameron Boychuck, Sam Lloyd, James Rabbetts (c), Felix Saro-Wiwa, William Pereira.

Player of the Week: Sam Lloyd

Walton Warriors   0   Brockham Badgers U9 (Red)   2  (Tadworth League)
Report by Tony Moriarty

On a quagmire of a pitch, it took only one minute for the match ball to take the appearance of a muddy relic from an archaeological field trip – which set the tone for the rest of this encounter. It was a case of seven paces forward, five paces back for our boys who had to abandon their customary free-flowing football for something that can only be described as ‘mud ball’! You get the picture…

Still, a win away from home was a plausible target despite the conditions. Walton offered little in attack and Andrew Kensett (our keeper) did not have a save to make in the whole game.

A few chances for Brockham in the first half came fairly close to breaking the deadlock. But it was not until ten minutes into the second half that we eventually found our way through the valiant Walton defence as Andy Kehl unleashed an unstoppable drive from eight yards that put the Badgers a goal up and in control of the match. Shortly after, captain Tom Killner made it 2-0 from close range to wrap things up.

There was a welcome return today for Toby Hunt who battled well in midfield - as did Adam Moriarty, who continues to grow in confidence. Michael Tsimekis, as ever, looked steady at the back and Jake Graham outmuscled anyone who came anywhere near him! Jack Stradling was unlucky not to score on a number of occasions but, given the state of the pitch, I won’t hold that against him!!

So not the prettiest of games, but a good lesson in perseverence for the boys. Well played!

That’s eight wins out of eight now for the U9 (Reds). We're very close to clinching the Tadworth First Divison title but, with our last two games against very strong opposition, we have to maintain the high standard of play that has got us into this position. So keep up the good work!

Star Player: Michael Brockwell – Michael made some smart interceptions today playing in defence and linked well with our midfield to stifle any ideas that Walton might have had of causing us a threat. Well done!

Brockham Badgers U9 (White)   0   Tadworth Tigers   3  (Tadworth League)
Report by Simon Haines

Another encouraging display from the U9 (Whites).  These were two teams more evenly matched than the score implies with end-to-end play and chances for both sides. In the absence of both regular goalkeepers, Euan Ratcliffe (normally our striker) played in goal and put in a good performance.

In the first half Tadworth scored two good goals and only added to their tally in the second half when a strong clearance by Euan hit the back of one of our own defenders and went in the goal.  With a little bit more of that kind of luck going in the direction of Brockham, the score would have been very different.

Although the Badgers did not score, they made a lot of chances.  Sooner or later they will start going in!  They tried very hard to pass the ball and play as a team.  If they keep working at that, the results will come.

Well played all the boys.

Star player: Two this week.
Tom Runacres - another competent performance in defence and ran strongly with the ball when breaking forward.
Euan Ratcliffe - a utility player who can apparently play in goal too!
The U10 Assassins had to dig in, and recover from going a goal down, to grind out a win at Epsom Eagles.
