Brockham Badgers U12 (Black)   7   Greenway   0  (Horsham and District League)
Report by Bryan Bletso

The U12 (Blacks) made it eight consecutive league wins with a 7-0 win over a gallant Greenway side. The win sees the side stretch their lead at the top of the division to eight points but having played three more games than their nearest rivals.

A hard fought first half saw few chances at either end as Brockham struggled to get into their rhythm after several weeks without a game due to postponements. Greenway had been forced to start the game with ten men but contained their hosts well, with Brockham dominating possession but doing little with it.  The lively George Corfield and Henry Smith were proving a thorn in Greenway's side though and gradually Badgers began to play with more confidence.  Finally a great through ball from Thomas Bletso put in Oliver Curtis for his first goal of the game, despatching the ball with a clinical strike from ten yards into the bottom left corner of the net.

Just three minutes into the second half, Curtis struck again. Alex Ward dispossessed a Greenway forward and played the ball to Ollie Legg, who passed to Curtis behind the Greenway defence.

Greenway came back strongly and only some commanding goal keeping by Connor Mitchell and good defending from David Atkinson and James Morgan kept them at bay. Sam Norkett was having a strong game at right back, while left back Tom Kinsey defended with his usual reliability.  Midfielder Alex Marshall was having another fine game,  breaking up the Greenway attacks and setting up Brockham moves.

Brockham though were starting to create chances at the other end, with Ollie Legg outstanding in the last twenty minutes.  Curtis completed his hat trick before Legg made it 4-0 minutes later.  Curtis then bagged his fourth of the game and, in the final stages, Bletso beat two defenders and the keeper to set up George Heymann for his second goal of the season. Bletso himself, having a subdued game by his standards, then rounded off the scoring at 7-0 with a powerful shot which the keeper saw late through a crowd of players.

Squad: Connor Mitchell, Tom Kinsey, Sam Norkett, DAvid Atkinson, Robbie Ventham, James Morgan, George Heymann, Thomas Bletso, Alex Marshall, Henry Smith, Ollie Legg, Ollie Curtis, George Corfield, Alex Ward
Old Dorkinians   0   Brockham Badgers U12A   4  (Frank Geiss Memorial Cup QF)

The U12As made it through to the semi finals of the Horsham and District League Cup with a solid victory at Old Dorkinians. A game played in excellent spirit by both sides saw Brockham dominate possession, scoring twice in each half.  The win was Brockham's seventh in succession in all competitions.

Badgers defended well throughout the game, keeper Henry Warne maintaining his concentration well despite not having a save to make. Brockham went ahead when lad of the match Aaron Clark hit a fine shot from the edge of the box into the top corner after ten minutes. The second goal followed after twenty minutes when Clark played in Ben Stokoe; the keeper parried the shot well only to see the ball unluckily rebound off the post into the net.

After the interval, with the Badgers midfield of Bill Rowlands, Clark, Dylan Peters and Joe Parker in control of the middle of the pitch, further goals looked likely. Stephen Kehl saw one effort well saved before a quick Rowlands free kick led to a Kehl shot from the edge of the area, making it 3-0.  With eight minutes to go, a good move from Badgers grabbed a fourth. Henry Hill passed to Kehl whose chip played in Stokoe, who laid the ball off to Clark to complete the scoring.

Brockham Badgers U14B   3   Ashington Cougars   2   (Horsham and District U14 Plate QF)
Report by Oli Goddard

On a beautiful Saturday morning, there was a Quarter Final Plate encounter between two in-form C league teams. Brockham’s hopes were high following a win against higher league opposition in the previous round.

After an inspirational talk from manager Bangs and captain Sourris, Brockham took to the field with a certain presence which Cougars were obviously aware of. An excellent midfield partnership was made in the form of little and large, Parker and Higgins. These two passed it round the Cougars' defence well, only for Parker to be chopped down on the edge of the area. Nothing came from the free kick. The best chance of the half came when the sensational Owen made a run down the wing and crossed the ball for Mackrell to dummy and Robins to score with a precise finish. Nearing the end of the first half, a tiring Brockham started to pick up injuries, with Goddard and Mackrell coming off. Cougars now looked on top, but a cleverly weighted ball put Higgins through on goal. He made no mistake. At the break it was Brockham 2 Ashington.0.

There was a big difference in the two team talks. While Bangs congratulated his players, the Cougars' boss gave his team a stern telling off and brought their best player on. This game was not over yet.

The second half was a different game with Cougars on top and the score line looked all too close when a deflected shot went over keeper Hern. Ashington were competing with more determination, passing well and using the skill of the two wingers more than in the first half. Brockham heads were dropping, but reassurance from captain and manager helped their morale. However Cougars were still on top and manager Bangs could not resist making a change, bringing Higgins back on.

Within minutes, the tide had turned and Brockham were back to their best. Despite slick passing between defence and midfield, the Badgers still couldn’t get the crucial third goal. Then up stepped Man of the Match Higgins who decided to go it alone and beat two defenders, to score his second of the game. At 3-1 to Brockham and with minutes to go, an Ashington comeback did not look at all likely - but a good finish pulled the score back to 3-2 and set up a tense finale.

Cougars' chance to rescue the tie came when the left winger was through on goal, but Knowles and Goddard teamed up and were able to clear the ball away from danger. The final whistle went and an astonished Brockham team were through to the semi final - a massive difference from just four years ago when they only got four points in the league and never won a cup game. Now the U14Bs are promotion candidates and one game away from the Plate Final.

Squad:  Hern, Goddard, Bangs, Moorecroft, Sourris (c), Higgins, Parker, Owen, Robins, Knowles, Mackrell, Mansfield, Thomas, Penny

Brockham Badgers U11A   1   Mole Valley Predators   0   (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report by Simon Winter

A momentous weekend in the life of the U11As began with the league visit of Mole Valley Predators, whose lowly league position promised a comfortable morning for Brockham, the league leaders. This proved anything but, as the Badgers were faced for long periods with ten men behind the ball and found it hard to break down a dogged defence. Perhaps distracted by thoughts of the cup match 24 hours away, and employing a squad rotation to keep some fresh legs for the Sunday, this was not a vintage performance from the Badgers and, after a first half spent almost exclusively in the Predators’ half, the score remained goalless.

The second half continued in similar fashion, but the stalemate was finally ended when, sixteen minutes in, Ben Sawyers sent over a corner that eventually found its way to Bertie Edwards-Hedges fifteen yards out. His bullet strike high into the net was all the more worthy of a goal as it was hit with his weaker(?) right foot. The same move was repeated four minutes later, but this time Bertie smashed the ball against the bar and couldn’t quite direct the rebound. Still, he had the consolation of earning the man of the match award.

In the closing minutes, Mole Valley had a goal disallowed for a clear offside and Brockham held out for a ninth league victory in ten, to leave them nine points clear at the top of Division 1, with games in hand.

Man of the Match:  Bertie Edwards-Hedges

Brockham Badgers U11A   0   Tooting and Mitcham United   5   (Surrey County Cup QF)

Report by Simon Winter

The day duly arrived and, on a frosty Brockham pitch that thawed quickly under a bright sun, Brockham Badgers U11A proudly took to the field against Tooting and Mitcham Utd Junior in the Quarter Finals of the Surrey County Cup. Tooting’s reputation went before them; their average score from the four previous rounds was 8-1, and the Brockham boys could be forgiven for harbouring a few nerves before kick-off.

The game plan was simple: to take the game to Tooting from the off, in their habitually effective way. Unfortunately, they instead found themselves back-pedalling and suffered the worst of starts, gifting Tooting a goal in the first minute. This was compounded when the visitors, perhaps generously, were awarded a penalty on ten minutes for a trip in the box, which was dispatched with no problem. Soon after, Brockham had their best chance of the half when, from a Harry Morland free kick outside the box, William Bletso contrived a lob on the turn that sailed just over the bar.

Tooting were a fast, skilful and physically imposing team with no apparent weaknesses, and Brockham did incredibly well to hold them to 0-2 at the break. Matt Higgins and Alex Nicholson were towers of strength at the heart of the defence, ably supported by full backs Will Mahoney and captain Ross Bangs, and the Badgers enjoyed a really strong spell of pressure midway through the half, with Josh Brown, Bertie Edwards-Hedges and Oli Winter imposing themselves in midfield and George Coffey a livewire going forward.

The game was still on if Brockham could contrive a goal, but sadly once again they allowed Tooting to score at the very start of the second period. This took the wind out of their sails and the visitors added two more well-taken goals for 0-5 before Matthew Batts made a couple of outstanding saves to prevent a rout, earning the Man of the Match award. Badgers finished strongly with no thought of giving in and, in fact, made Tooting work for their victory throughout.

So a fine cup run came to an end, but Brockham can be extremely proud to have made it so far and to have shared the stage with a team of Tooting and Mitcham’s stature, one of the very best clubs in the county attracting players from all corners of the region. Manager Simon Coffey ensured all fifteen players played a part in the match and praised them for a fine collective effort.

Thanks also to those who turned up to cheer Brpckham on - especially those who turned out to add their support to the Club, even though they didn't have sons of their own in the squad.

Man of the Match: Matthew Batts

Squad: Matthew Batts, Will Mahoney, Matt Higgins, Alex Nicholson, Ross Bangs, Josh Brown, Harry Morland, Oli Winter, Bertie Edwards-Hedges, George Coffey, William Bletso, Liam Ratcliffe, Dan Hetzel, Angus Hodge, Ben Sawyers.

Brockham Badgers U11B   6   Epsom Eagles B   1  (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report and pictures by Trevor Reaveley

It was a day Ollie Kong won't forget in a hurry, or the parents for that matter, coming away with the Player of the Day accolade for scoring five of the six goals.

Epsom Eagles started brightly attacking our goal and, with our midfield and defence seeming to get in each other's way too often, it really looked for the first five minutes as though the Eagles would take the lead. A couple of good well placed passes and a run into the opposition's half calmed us down and slowly we began to take possession of the game.

It wasn't long before Ollie Kong started the scoring for us with a good, flowing movement upfield ending in a well taken shot from near the penalty spot. His second followed in a very similar vein and then it was Epsom's turn to attack. A good move down their right wing ended with a foul in the area and a penalty. Michael Ellis stood strong in goal and the spot kick was well saved by him.

A few minutes later, however, the Eagles did score with another good move down the right and a shot from the edge of the area. Ellis once again managed to get a hand to it, but Edward Newman and Tim Hines - both backtracking furiously - were unable to keep it out of the net.

A two goal cushion was restored a few minutes later when, once again, Ollie Kong latched onto a long ball and his speed and determination took him into the area. In what was probably the goal of the day, with three defenders and a goalkeeper bearing down on him, he calmly steadied himself and chipped the ball over the advancing keeper and into the net.

Tom Moriarty made it four before half time when sheer strength - both mental and physical - helped him to keep the ball on the edge of the area, out-muscle two defenders and unleash a shot that was only going to end up in one place.

Brockham started the second half in the ascendency with Kong scoring two more fine goals in the first ten minutes. This effectively killed the game. Epsom did still have their moments, but keeper Ellis and defenders Kensett, Newman, Barnes and Kilner were keeping it tight at the back.

A good, solid game by all concerned with most of the team holding their positions and everyone pulling together. This was really a continuation of the second half performance against Molesey two weeks ago and once again this proves that, on our day, we can put in a very creditable performance. I feel a special mention must go to Tom Barnes, who has slotted in and made the position of right back well and truly his.

Next week will be a test of character when we play Alexandra United, top of the league with 72 goals in the net!

Player Of The Day: Ollie Kong - five outstanding goals.

A fantastic cup run comes to a brave end.  But the U11As competed all the way and helped put Brockham on the map with Surrey's youth footballing finest!
