Brockham Badgers U12A   4   Ashington Cougars   1   (Horsham and District League)

The U12As made it five straight wins with a solid home victory, cementing their midtable position.  A good team performance overcame an early goal for Ashington, but after hitting the woodwork four times along with numerous half chances, the Badgers deserved the win over battling opponents.

Brockham took time to get going, but Ben Stokoe had already hit the post when Ashington broke and, at the second attempt, squeezed the ball over the line despite a great initial save from keeper Henry Warne. But Badgers were back on level terms just three minutes later, Joe Parker putting in Stephen Kehl who finished with a strong shot.  Brockham had plenty of the ball either side of half time, but were unable to take a lead until ten minutes into the second half when Ryan Winter, having another strong game, crossed for Kehl whose shot was deflected into the goal by an Ashington defender.

The third Brockham goal rewarded a great move. A quick throw by Warne found Henry Hill who in turn pushed the ball through to Joe Parker.  Parker then passed to Kehl who played in Mitch Ward. Ward initially hit the bar with a header before following the rebound in to make it 3-1.

To be fair to Ashington, they came back into the game in the final fifteen minutes, but Aaron Clark and Bill Rowlands were doing well to mark the visitors' danger midfielder out of the game. Michael Carty and lad-of-the-match Tim Whybrow were looking solid in the middle of defence, supported on either flank at full back by Alex Postles and Jack Hunt.  Dylan Peters was also the main instigator of many of Badgers breaks during the period of pressure from Ashington.

Brockham made sure of the win with a speculative effort from Kehl on the stroke of full time, the shot taking a wicked deflection beat the keeper for 4-1.
Molesey Juniors   5   Brockham Badgers U11B   3   (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report by Trevor Reaveley

No one would be wrong if they came out with the phrase "a game of two halves" when referring to this match.

In the opening half, it was quite possibly the worst performance I have seen by the U11Bs this season. There was no discipline, no passion and definitely no positional sense. At a couple of points we were playing with seven players up front and three defenders - and with no midfield Molesey were picking us off at will.

The only surprise of the first half is that it didn't finish with more than five goals against us - mainly thanks to some heroics by Michael Ellis, back in goal for the first time this year.

So starting the second half trailing by 5-0 we weren't expecting a lot, but a good half-time talk and some fine support from the touchline seemed to spur the Badgers on. The defenders suddenly found their positions, midfield were linking back to front and a goal looked on the cards. Sure enough, DJ Hall popped up in the box to get our first of the day, closely followed by a second from Ollie Kong.

The Badgers were definitely the dominant force in the second half, with Molesey having only two attacks that I can think of. Their keeper was very alert and was out of his area to clear up any loose balls, but their defence looked a bit suspect under sustained pressure. With Tom Moriarty scoring our third goal it suddenly looked as though we might take something from the game, but it wasn't to be and the Molsey team held out with eleven men defending until the final whistle.

As bad as we were in the first half, it was one of our best performances in the second and we proved that playing a good solid game we can take on the better teams in the league and give them a good run for their money. But for the lack of discipline in the opening exchanges, we could have won this game. A shame for the boys, but a harsh lesson which we did very well to (partly) rectify.

The Molesey manager summed things up at the end when he came across to us and said: "most teams would have crumbled and given in by half time, but that was a great comeback and you really scared us".

Player Of The Day: Tom Moriarty - determination from start to finish.
A spirited second half fightback to 2-2 wasn't quite enough - as slack marking brought an end to the U10 Assassins recent unbeaten run.

Ashtead Colts   3   Brockham Badgers U10 Assassins   2  (Epsom and Ewell Mini League)
Report and pictures by Paul Walton

Despite a magnificent fight back, the U10 Assassins could not match the organisation of second division leaders Ashtead Colts, finally losing 3-2.

The contrast was strongest at the start. Ashtead started confidently whereas Brockham looked hesitant, conceding too much space in dangerous areas. Ashtead took full advantage, scoring twice in ten minutes, and looked set to dominate the game.

But Brockham fought back.  Manager Jason Rabbetts made several midfield changes to steady the team and the Badgers started playing as they can, creating several good chances. Felix Saro-Wiwa and James Rabbetts were both unlucky after good moves.

Early in the second half Brockham stepped up the pressure and two crisp, low shots from Sam Lloyd brought the match level, setting up a tense finish.

Ashtead proved the more resourceful. Sustained pressure from them led to a series of corners and again Brockham hesitation led to a free header from close range for Ashtead, giving keeper Jamie Luckins no chance.  Final Brockham chances from Chris Walton and Luke Brightman went just wide and an engrossing match finished with Ashtead narrow winners.

Once they were in their stride, Brockham demonstrated commitment, skill and resilience.  With only a touch more organisation at key moments they could have won this game.

Squad: Jamie Luckins, Tom Hampshire, Chris Walton, Tom Charman, Luke Brightman, Cameron Boychuck, Sam Lloyd (c), James Rabbetts, Felix Saro-Wiwa, William Pereira.

Player of the Week: James Rabbetts

West Sutton Rangers B   1   Brockham Badgers U17   10   (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report by Roger Bayliss

In a brilliant debut and stunning five goal haul, Anthony Israkpona steered Brockham to a convincing win and great start to their New Year fixtures. Without a competitive game since the end of November and missing five of the seventeen-man squad for this game, the U17s totally destroyed a committed West Sutton side.

Early stages of the game were even as Brockham gradually moved into gear after a long layoff. Some neat early exchanges allowed Hinchliffe to find himself on the edge of the area. With a fine powerful shot he beat the keeper from twenty yards to put Brockham ahead (20mins). A second goal followed almost immediately as Bryer flicked the ball in from close range (22mins).

Stunned from these successive strikes, West Sutton pushed the Brockham defence back. They were rewarded from a corner, reducing the deficit to 2-1 (35mins). Brockham again went on the counter offensive and took the score to 4-1 before half time - firstly through Hinchliffe with a close range shot (40 mins) and then after Bayliss was brought down from a surging run, Israkpona stepping forward to score his first goal for the Club from a penalty rebound (43 mins).

Within minutes of the restart, Israkpona finished a strong run through on goal with a fine shot (47mins). At 5-1 Brockham were dominating play. Israkpona added to his tally with a superb cross shot for his hat-trick (50mins) and then a chip into the back of the net to put Brockham 8-1 ahead (65mins). Further pressure provided Brockham with a corner from which Nazer tapped in (68mins). After an unbelievable second half, Israkpona scored his fifth and final goal from a strong surging run down the left and a powerful finish past the oncoming keeper (75mins). In the final stages of the game the hard working Bryer concluded the scoring to give Brockham a convincing 10-1 win (80mins).

It is easy to forget Brockham's U17s have stepped up into a more competitive Epsom and Ewell Premier League this season. The lads should now realise their individual qualities and team strength to produce this level of play on a more consistent basis. I believe this result was achieved without the team operating at peak performance. Put it down to a long layoff, but I will take 10-1 anyday!!!

Man of the Match: Anthony Israkpona - without doubt, a thriller of a debut and performance.

Special mentions: Tom Bayliss whose second half performance was dazzling and captain leadership exemplary. Luke Rowe, a welcome back from long term injury and suspension.

Team: Parker, Bayliss (c), Nagle, Collins (Rowe), Hinchliffe, Roberts, Nazer, Mothee, Cackett, Bryer, Israkpona.

Brockham Badgers U14B   3   Horsham Tigers   0   (Horsham and District U14 Plate R1)
Report by Simon Goddard

What a difference the tactical change by team manager Bangs made. At the last outing, in the search for goals, Bangs used just three at the back but compensated with three up front. The result - a twelve goal feast which the U14Bs edged 7-5. The spectators were expecting more of the same, but the previous week must have been too nerve racking for the manager as he reverted to a more conventional 4-4-2 line up. His astute tinkering clearly worked as the defence produced an almost faultless display and the forwards rewarded them with three goals and, more importantly, the teams first ever cup victory in this plate fixture.

Badgers started well and were matching their opponents from the division above in possession, skill and commitment. The first half chance fell to Mackrell who miscued a difficult shot, but this seemed to give Badgers confidence and belief in themselves. Parker was causing problems all over the pitch and his pass put Robins through on goal, only for the Tigers' keeper to save. The game was following a familiar pattern for Badgers U14B - lots of good pressure but no goals until, just before half time, good work by Goddard led to a goalmouth scramble and Sourris was able poke the ball over the line.

Playing downhill with the wind in the second half, Badgers were confident but Horsham Tigers came out much stronger. Still the Brockham defence held firm, Thomas and Moorcroft in particular putting in sound performances. The keeper Hern demonstrated his excellent reading of the game, continually snuffing out Tiger attacks by clearing from outside his area. The defence’s hard work was rewarded midway through the second half when a long shot from Robins eluded the Tigers keeper to make it 2-0.

The second goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of Tigers and Badgers looked composed as they completed a 3-0 victory after Mackrell followed up a Parker shot whoch had been too powerful for the keeper to hold.

Manager Bangs praised all his team in the after match talk, but reserved special praise for a defence which this time had given him a less stressful Saturday morning.

Squad: Hern, Thomas, Moorcroft, Bangs, Goddard, Robins, Parker, Knowles, Mackrell, Owen, Brightman, Lloyd, Penny
