Brockham Badgers U11B   0   Hook Youth   2   (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report by Trevor Reaveley

After having our previous encounter postponed because of bad weather, it seemed as though the same could happen again today. Very heavy drizzle turning into rain and slippery conditions underfoot threatened the game.

Brockham got off to a bright start with the majority of play being in Hook's half, but it soon became evident what a physical side the opposition was. Any attempt at free flowing football was stopped by the ball sticking in a puddle, a hand across a chest or a foul. As it was, it was Hook who took the lead when a good move down the left ended in a shot squirming past our stand in keeper, Michael Cook, the ball being wet and spinning everywhere.

The Badgers had the upper hand all through the first half with Cook only having two more clearances to make and Hook Youth's defence and keeper being kept very busy.

The second half started much as the first had finished with Brockham taking the initiative but, once again, it was Hook who scored from a loose ball in the area which couldn't be cleared and it rolled over the line agonisingly slow in the mud spattered conditions.

With the opposition getting a grip on the game, the Badgers were pushing much further forward, both Edward Newman and Harry Kensitt making surging runs from the centre of defence only to be stopped by Hook's defensive tactics. Luka Kilner, Andrew Watson and Tim Hines all had good attempts on goal and, at the back, Tom Barnes was a good last man.

In all fairness, Hook's defence were a very formidable outfit but, for good footballing skills, the Badgers took the credit. We were very proud of the boys who put on a good show in the face of adversity against a tough team.

Our best regards and a speedy recovery to goalkeeper Michael Ellis.

Player Of The Day: Edward Newman - kept on trying at every attempt, despite the physical punishment he was getting.
Cranleigh Cranes   0   Brockham Badgers U12 (Black)   9   (Horsham and District League)

Report by Bryan Bletso

The U12 (Blacks) maintained their top of the table position with a good win in the driving rain at Cranleigh. The scoreline was perhaps a little harsh on a battling Cranleigh side who never gave up, with Badgers running in four goals in the last few minutes to make the win look that much more convincing.  However, this was Brockham's eigth consecutive win in all competitions, with the lads playing some confident football at present.

Badgers dominated the game, but the lad of the match was undoubtedly the Cranleigh keeper who played really well, making save after save and rarely letting the slippery ball slip out of his clutches.

Brockham could have been ahead after ten minutes, but leading scorer Ollie Curtis unusually failed to find the target from a penalty. The scoring was finally opened on fifteen minutes, a great delivery by Toby Dowle from a corner being headed into his own net by an unfortunate defender.  Ollie Legg made it 2-0 soon after, his first touch after coming off the bench, again from a Dowle corner. But Cranleigh showed more adventure as the half drew to a close and David Atkinson and Connor Mitchell in the heart of the Brockham defence demonstrated good awareness to keep the Cranes at bay.

The start of the second half saw Cranleigh make a fight of it, but Robbie Ventham, Tom Kinsey, Max Ruff, Alex Ward and Sam Norkett were all playing well to prevent any shots on goal.  With the rain getting heavier, Brockham stepped up a gear for the last third of the game and, when Ollie Curtis followed up his first effort to make it 3-0, the result was not in doubt.

Badgers now ran riot. George Corfield scored from close range after more good work from Curtis, captain Thomas Bletso made it 5-0 with a great long range strike, Henry Smith scored from an acute angle for a sixth, and Ollie Legg powered in a thunderous shot from just inside the box for 7-0 as Badgers made the last five minutes tell. There was just time for Alex Marshall to squeeze the ball home after a good run from centre midfield and, on the final whistle, Toby Dowle capped a good morning's work by notching his side's ninth goal as the home team tired.

Squad:  George Corfield, Tom Kinsey, Alex Ward, David Atkinson, Connor Mitchell, Thomas Bletso, Robbie Ventham, Alex Marshall, Toby Dowle, Ollie Curtis, Henry Smith, Ollie Legg, Max Ruff, Sam Norkett
Fine football, but no points for the U11Bs as they came up against physical opposition.

Roundshaw Colts   0   Brockham Badgers U10 Assassins   4  (Epsom and Ewell Mini League)
Report and Pictures by Paul Walton

The U10 Assassins moved to within two points of the top of the Epsom and Ewell League Division Two as they overcame drenching rain and poor conditions underfoot to beat Roundshaw Colts.  The Brockham keeper Jamie Luckins looked a cold and lonely figure, only called into serious action three times and coping easily on each occasion.

In the first few minutes, Roundshaw survived a penalty appeal and two corners. But from the third corner, Felix Saro-Wiwa scored direct from the kick as the keeper could only get his fingertips to the ball.

Brockham settled into an effective passing game, building from the back and attacking down the flanks.  With the defence secure, Player of the Week Chris Walton was able to make dangerous forward runs from the back.  From an interception in the Roundshaw half, Walton hit a dipping long range shot which hit the bar.  Further pressure saw the ball scrambled off the Roundshaw line just before half-time.

In the second half, a flowing move typified Brockham’s football. Walton broke down a Roundshaw attack and fed the ball to William Pereira on the left.  After beating a couple of defenders, Pereira laid the ball on to James Rabbetts who scored with his second attempt.

Frantic Roundshaw defending and profligate Brockham finishing maintained the score for several more minutes, but then Luke Brightman volleyed in a cross from Rabbetts.  The scoring was completed when Rabbetts converted the rebound from a Walton shot.

Brockham manager Jason Rabbetts was especially pleased that the lessons learnt in training are transferring well to matches and that Brockham kept their third consecutive clean sheet.

Squad: Jamie Luckins, Tom Hampshire, Chris Walton, Tom Charman, Luke Brightman, Cameron Boychuck, Sam Lloyd (c), James Rabbetts, Felix Saro-Wiwa, William Pereira.

Player of the Week:  Chris Walton

Brockham Badgers U9 (Blue)   1   Brockham Badgers U9 (Red)   4  (Tadworth League)
Report by Tony Moriarty

In boggy conditions and after three weeks without any football during the Christmas period, this fixture was never going to be a classic. Despite this both teams put in a good effort to keep the spectators entertained in the dreary conditions.

There were signs from the Blues that their poor start to season might be about to turn into a brighter finish. Two of the Reds' goals were fortunate and, on another day, probably wouldn't have gone in. Far more intelligent play from the Blues saw good interchanges throughout. Michael Brockwell continues to re-establish himself as one of our year group's best defenders - and Tommy Gill and Ollo Hounsfield threatened the strong Reds' backline on several occasions. I thought Ollo's goal was particularly well taken, slotting the ball positively into the far corner from an awkward angle.

Star player for the U9 (Blues): Michael Brockwell - another classy performance from Michael today. Well done!

After setting such a high standard since the start of the season, the Reds in all honesty played below par today. However, they say the sign of a good team is one which can still win when not playing at their best!

Andrew Kensett had a rare excursion out of goal, playing left midfield for the second half, and scored the pick of the goals, cutting in cleverly from the left then hitting a sweet shot, which gave the keeper no chance at the near post.

Despite the poor conditions, Michael Tsimekis made some excellent defensive blocks as did Jake Graham who coped well with the opposition attack. Until he took over in goal at half-time Andy Kehl had a great game in midfield scoring an opportune goal from distance - but they all count!

At the season's halfway point, five league wins out of five now leave the Reds clear leaders by eight points at the top of the Tadworth League First Division. Let's keep focused for the remaining games!

Star player for the U9 (Reds): Adam Moriarty - effective tackling, good running down the flanks throughout the match and finding good space in threatening positions. Adam did the simple things very well today - well done!
Brockham Badgers U12A   4   Horsham Crusaders   2   (Horsham and District League)

The U12As continued their recent good form with an exciting win over Horsham Crusaders, who had previously lost only once all season.

In tricky conditions with driving rain, Brockham put in probably their best display, keeper Henry Warne once more showing excellent handling and composure in front of a determined defence of Tim Whybrow, Michael Carty, Matthew Gill and Alex Postles.

Badgers were ahead on ten minutes when a superb Ryan Winter corner was toe poked home by Ben Stokoe. A through ball from lad-of-the-match Dillon Peters to Stephen Kehl looked to have opened up the Horsham defence for a second goal soon after, but some pacy defending saw the ball blocked.

Horsham were playing some neat passing football, and a good move five minutes before half time brought an equaliser as a cross into the box was side-footed home from close range. Five minutes after half time it was 2-1 to Horsham as another close range goal was well taken, this time following a free kick.

Brockham responded well and, if anything, started to pass the ball around with even more confidence. Aaron Clark and Bill Rowlands became more influential and the equaliser came when Joe Parker passed out to Mitchell Ward, his cross being volleyed home by Stephen Kehl.

In the last fifteen minutes the match became a fast moving end-to-end affair, but it was Brockham who took the lead, Peters putting in Kehl whose shot from the edge of the area wrong footed the Crusaders' keeper for 3-2.  Horsham really exerted pressure on the Brockham goal for the final stages of the game, but Badgers defended well and when Ward shot home from an acute angle after a breakout, the game was won.

Squad: Henry Warne, Alex Postles, Matthew Gill, Jack Hunt, Michael Carty, Tim Whybrow, Dillon Peters, Aaron Clark, Bill Rowlands, Joe Parker, Ben Stokoe, Ryan Winter, Stephen Kehl, Mitchell Ward
East Grinstead Town   5   Brockham Badgers U14B   7   (Horsham and District League)
Report by Oli Goddard

It was a late kick off between two draw specialists, so nobody expected such a goal fest.

Brockham took the lead very early on when Goddard made a run and crossed to Mackrell who scored his eighth of the season. However East Grinstead fought back and within a minute got the equaliser with a cool finish. Five minutes later a ball from Penny came to Goddard who passed to Mackrell, whose shot was saved only for Goddard to tuck in the rebound. East Grinstead started to press, but Bangs, Sourris and Moorecroft held firm.

After the break, East Grinstead scored a sloppy goal to get back on level terms. Soon after this they went ahead when a low drive hit a puddle and confused keeper Hern, sending him the wrong way. The conditions by this point were close to unplayable, but the two teams laboured on.

Brockham started to get on top of the game and sure enough the equaliser came when Mackrell scored with a lovely finish. Within a matter of seconds, East Grinstead were level again when a punt over the top panicked the defence and they let through a striker who couldn’t believe his luck.

It wasn’t long though until Brockham scored again -  Thomas’s head connected with the ball which landed at the feet of Goddard, who scored his seventh of the season.

Game on. Another defensive error, a casual back pass, led to East Grinstead's fifth goal, With five minutes to go could Grinstead hold on? The answer - no. A looping cross came in from Moorcroft and an unfortunate defender headed it under his keepers legs. All square once more at 5 – 5. Then, with three minutes to go, came undoubtedly the best goal of the game. Brightman passed to Robins, who passed to Goddard and, when he flicked it on, Mackrell had to score his hat-trick - and he did.

With the last move of the game, Brockham sealed the victory at 7-5. A throw from Hern went from Mansfield to Owen and on to Parker, who finished in style.

Squad:  Hern, Sourris, Bangs, Moorcroft, Thomas, Knowles, Parker, Penny, Goddard, Robins, Mackrell, Brightman, Mansfield, Owen

Man of the Match: Hat-trick hero Mackrell.

Brockham Badgers U10 Barbarians   6   Stanley Park Dynamo   0   (Epsom and Ewell Mini League)
Report and Pictures by Jean Paul Jhugroo

After a very slow start to life in the Epsom and Ewell League, the U10 Barbarians have gathered momentum and moved up the table. With 2007 upon us, the team was looking to continue a good run of form.

Badgers immediately dominated play and Ashley Marshall's perfect delivery from a corner allowed Lewis Wood to volley home the opening goal of the game. From that point forward Brockham really controlled the game and kept Stanley Park Dynamo pinned back in their own half. The midfield trio of Lewis Wood, Ashley Marshall and Ali Masson continued to push forward and create numerous chances, but none were converted until Ashley carved open a chance for Ali Masson. The keeper blocked the shot, but only into the path of Nathan Hughes who slotted home the second goal. That was soon followed by a third. Badgers won another corner; Stanley Park read the original threat, but Lewis Wood's low shot in to the bottom corner ensured a three-nil half time lead.

Stanley Park came out for the second half with such a positive attitude that Cameron Wallis, who was merely a spectator in the first half, had to pull off some early saves. George Gomes and Archie Knight also stepped up to the challenge and had a really busy opening ten minutes.

Although under pressure, Badgers still managed to create openings. A shot from Ashley Marshall was blocked and rebounded onto Nathan Hughes chest, going straight into the back of the net and taking his total for the season to thirteen. Badgers continued to break down Dynamo's defence and won a free kick just out of the area; Ashley Marshall's fierce shot went straight to the top left hand corner of the goal for 5-0.

Although down, Stanley Park Dynamo really put up a fight and continued to make George Gomes and Archie Knight's second half of the game very busy, but great composure and exceptional defending ensured a clean sheet.

Moving into the final minutes of the game Nathan Hughes and Lewis Wood, both on a hat-trick, tried tirelessly to get that goal. The final attack came when Lewis Wood was pulled down for a penalty, but the referee played advantage as George Fenwick opened his account for the season to wrap up a 6-0 win.

The perfect start to the 2007, Badgers really deserved their victory.

Squad: Cameron Wallis, Nathan Hughes, Archie Knight, George Fenwick, Lewis Wood, Ashley Marshall (c), Alistair Masson, George Gomes

Player of the Week: Nathan Hughes - a typical poacher's performance!
