Brockham Badgers U12A   2   Cranleigh Tigers   4  (Horsham and District League)

The U12As passed up an ideal chance to leapfrog into midtable, losing at home to bottom of the league Cranleigh Tigers in a game affected by some atrocious driving rain.

Badgers, missing the influential Dylan Peters, Tim Whybrow and Matt Gill, started slowly and never really improved as defensive lapses dominated their performance.  The defeat comes after a series of games where the U12As have done really well against strong opposition, so manager Ian Kehl will feel that his team can play much better than this and push on strongly as the season progresses.

Badgers were behind as early as the first minute, after failing to complete some routine clearances, and the score remained at 1-0 until the interval with neither side really taking a grip on the game.

The second half opened with another sloppy goal conceded by Brockham as the defence failed to clear when a simple opportunity arose.  Briefly, that sparked Badgers to life as Aaron Clark and Bill Rowlands started to win some midfield possession and, soon after, Clark won a 50-50 ball in midfield, then played a great pass through to Henry Hill to halve the defecit.

Just when it looked like Brockham were back in the hunt, yet another defensive lapse let Cranleigh extend their lead, but Brockham soon responded with a good goal as flowing football from Stephen Kehl and Hill was capped off by Ben Stokoe finishing the move well.

However, yet again Badgers hit the self distruct button, as Cranleigh killed the game off, hitting their fourth goal with five minutes to go.

This was probably Badgers' worst performance of the season, but they can play far better and will put the game down to experience, as they face mid-table Broadbridge Heath twice in the next fortnight.

Squad: Henry Warne, Alex Postles, JAck Hunt, Michael Carty, Maxim Harper, Aaron Clark, Bill Rowlands, Henry Hill, Stephen Kehl, Ben Stokoe, Ryan Winter, Mitch Ward, Joe Parker.
Twin Oaks   4   Brockham Badgers U12 (Black)   5   (Horsham and District League)

Report by Bryan Bletso

The U12 (Blacks) pulled off their best win of the season at league leaders Twin Oaks, making it six wins from their last seven games.  Badgers had expected a tough encounter against a side unbeaten in the league this season, who had only conceded eight goals in their league campaign to date - and so it proved, in an enthalling game played in windy, rainy conditions.

Badgers were ahead early on. Ollie Legg scored from outside the box with a superb strike as Brockham opened in emphatic style, making the most of winning the toss and playing with the wind.  Twin Oaks equalised soon after, as the referee overuled a linesman's flag for offside, but Brockham showed their dominance by really taking the game to the league leaders.

Ollie Curtis made it 2-1, then William Bletso pounced for a third after the keeper blocked Curtis' shot.  Robbie Ventham got on the scoresheet from close range to make it 4-1 and, although Twin Oaks pulled a goal back, Badgers made it 5-2 at the interval when Curtis grabbed his twentieth goal of the season on the stroke of half time.

With the wind against them in the second half, Badgers saw the home side have most of the possession, but keeper Connor Mitchell was doing everything right in goal, while the centre back pair of Henry Smith and David Atkinson was outstanding and left back Tom Kinsey had another good game.  In midfield, lad of the match and captain, Thomas Bletso, once more led by example and drove his side forward with Robbie Ventham, while Ollie Legg and Toby Dowle worked hard on each flank to close down the opposition.  James Morgan, George Corfield, Max Ruff and Sam Norkett all contributed to the cause as Badgers had chances to extend their lead; Tom Bletso was unlucky to have a goal from a corner ruled out when the ball was adjudged to have gone out of play.

However, Twin Oaks pulled back to 5-3, giving themselves hope with fifteen minutes to go, but Badgers battled with real determination and, although Twin Oaks did get a fourth goal late on, several last ditch tackles by William Bletso, Henry Smith and David Atkinson saw Badgers deservedly hold on and put them firmly amongst the leading pack in the Horsham League 'D' division.

Squad: Connor Mitchell, Tom Kinsey, Max Ruff, Robbie Ventham, David Atkinson, Thomas Bletso (c), Robbie Ventham, Toby Dowle, Ollie Legg, Ollie Curtis, William Bletso, Sam Norkett, George Heymann, James Morgan.
Old Coulsdon Colts B   6   Brockham Badgers U10 Assassins   3   (Epsom and Ewell Mini League)
Report by Paul Walton

In blustery driving rain, on a quagmire of a pitch, the U10 Assassins' recent good form deserted them as they were beaten 6-3 by a clinical Old Coulsdon Colts U10B side.

In the first half  Brockham created twice as many chances as Coulsdon, but some familiar frailties returned as simple and effective passes were missed, most of the chances were squandered and too often Coulsdon players were unmarked.  Going in at half-time 2-3 down, Brockham pushed forward in the second half, but Coulsdon coolly took advantage of the space created in the midfield and defence with precise finishing.

From the start early chances fell to Coulsdon, but Badgers' attacking runs generated chances for Felix Saro-Wiwa, William Pereira and James Rabbetts.  Agonisingly, the shots went just wide.  As Brockham players drifted out of position, two sharp Coulsdon attacks found players unmarked, in midfield and then in front of goal, to score.  In reply, Brockham’s attacking style was increasingly limited to solo runs up field until a free kick from Saro-Wiwa squeezed through a crowded area.  Shortly afterwards, a good goal kick from Chris Walton found Saro-Wiwa unmarked on the half-way line.  He turned and ran through the defence to level the scores.

The next goal had the potential to change the momentum of the game - and it came from a speculative long-range shot from Coulsdon which found the top of the net. From this point on, better Coulsdon discipline and composure won the day.

The deteriorating conditions dominated the first part of the second half with only rare moments of skill.  In one of these, Luke Brightman produced a penetrating cross from the right through to James Rabbetts at the far post who levelled the score.  But that was the end of the Brockham threat.  Coulsdon scored from a free kick and also when a cross from the right was touched in by an unmarked forward at the far post.  Finally a speculative long ball wasn’t cleared by the Brockham defence allowing a Coulsdon forward clear on goal to finish the scoring.

Squad: Jamie Luckins, Tom Hampshire, Chris Walton, Tom Charman, Sam Lloyd, James Rabbetts (c), Luke Brightman, Cameron Boychuck, Felix Saro-Wiwa, William Pereira.

Player of the week: Sam Lloyd

Brockham Badgers U12 (Black)   9   North Holmwood Boys   0    (Horsham and District League)

The U12 (Whites) secured their first league win of the season with an emphatic 9-0 win over local rivals North Holmwood Boys.  In difficult conditions, both teams gave a good account of themselves in the first half, but Badgers were just the stronger and goals from Joshua Hook and Daniel Hoad (both on their way to hat tricks)gave Brockham a 2-0 half time advantage.

Without subs in the second half, the visitors tired on a heavy pitch while Badgers started to play some open passing football.  Seven second half goals followed from Joshua Hook  (33rd and 34th mins), Daniel Hoad (45,59), Josh Caldwell (58), Edward Smith (39) and George Duckworth 1 (53) as Brockham rounded off a good performance.

Squad:  Jack Whetnall, Harry Roberts, Joe Stradling, Stefan Issberner, Callum Tilling, Liam Doyle, Dougie Baldwin, George Duckworth, Ollie Smith, Daniel Ryan, Daniel Hoad, Josh Caldwell, Joshua Hook.
Stanley Park Dynamo B   1   Brockham Badgers U10 Barbarians   3   (Epsom and Ewell Mini League)
Report by Jean Paul Jhugroo

The U10 Barbarians had to reshuffle their back line, moving Ali Masson into the heart of the defence.  Badgers were also looking to build on their last victory and move up the league table. Playing on most probably the wettest day of the season it was going to be a test of character.

Badgers started on a positive note, passing the ball through Dynamo's midfield and creating some early chances, but were unable to convert any of them. After a long period of holding the ball in Dynamo's half, Badgers won a corner. Ashley Marshall's perfect cross met Lewis Wood's head and Brockham took the lead.

Badgers continued to play some good football and looked in control. However, Dynamo managed to catch them on the break - but Cameron Wallis safe hands ensure that any threat was curtailed. A good goal kick from Cameron Wallis led to George Fenwick playing a perfectly weighted pass to Ashley Marshall on the edge of the goal area. Ashley's shot was low and fast - straight into the back of the net.

Into the second half and there were early chances for Lewis Wood and Luc Jhugroo. A move started by Luc Jhugroo on left wing with a cheeky back heeled pass to Ashley Marshall ended with Nathan Hughes hitting the side netting. Although Badgers were starting tire, they showed great character and dug deep. Some smart defending by Ali Masson was converted into attack when he played a long ball up the wing to George Fenwick. George hit a shot which the Dynamo keeper managed to stop - but the ball was spinning on the line. Nathan Hughes was first to react and he tapped the ball into the net for Brockham's third.

In the final five minutes, Dynamo stepped up a gear and really pushed Badgers back into their half. Only the defensive partnership of Ali Masson and Archie Knight kept them at bay. However, when Brockham faisled to clear a corner, Dynamo grabbed a goal.  But it proved to be simply a consolation as Brockham stood firm to take all three points.

Squad: Cameron Wallis, Nathan Hughes, Archie Knight, Luc Jhugroo, Lewis Wood, Ashley Marshall(c), Alistair Masson, George Fenwick

Player of the Week: George Fenwick - two assists and high energy levels!

Onslow   6   Brockham Badgers U9 (White)   0  (Tadworth League)
Report by Simon Haines

Let's forget the result just for a moment. Overall, the U9 (Whites) improve each week. They move a little better, pass a little better, call a little better - and play as a team a little better.  No one seems too botheres about the results. Indeed, an ironic camaraderie is developing around this very subject. But the boys still seem to enjoy playing football....well - 'enjoy' may not be quite the correct terminology for Saturday's game.

Brockham started well and, with a little luck, a couple of early chances would have gone in and the game would have been entirely different.  As it was, Onslow were 2-0 up at half time and the Badgers were optimistic of a change in fortune kicking downhill in the second half.

And then the heavens opened and it rained very hard with the aid of an already cold blustery wind.  That’s about all there is to say about the second half really!  Perhaps the highlight was the sight of my umbrella being chased across the field for about 300 yards by one of the boys - only to be caught and instantly blown inside out!

Keep working at the football – the results will come.

Star player: Laurence Dean - terrific defender. Never gives up!
