Horsley A   1   Brockham Badgers U10 Assassins   6   (George Szekely Cup QF)
Report and Pictures by Paul Walton

The U10 Assassins found their best form in the George Szekely cup to outclass the previously unbeaten division leaders Horsley A.

After Jamie Luckins pulled off a brilliant save early on, Brockham settled and never looked threatened. From over a dozen high quality chances and many more shots on goal, player of the week William Pereira scored the first four, with Felix Saro-Wiwa and Sam Lloyd also taking chances before Horsley scored a consolation goal.

As Horsley kicked off, they soon provided a reminder of the difficulties they caused the last time the sides met. A series of sharp, fast counterattacks led to a Horsley corner, from which they hit the post. With Brockham not yet finding their passing game, Horsley broke again and looked certain to score with three free attackers, but Jamie Luckins produced a commanding save.

Progressively, Tom Hampshire and Chris Walton, with Sam Lloyd in the holding midfield role, cut out the Horsley attacks further up the field and started to link with the Brockham front three. Tenacious tackling by Lloyd in the Horsley box provided a chance for Pereira, which he converted firmly. After two more chances for James Rabbetts, Lloyd again found Pereira in space and his crisp shot made the score 2-0. At the end of another two minutes of pressure, Rabbetts battled to free the ball for Pereira, who scored through a crowd of players past an unsighted keeper. Horsley were relieved to reach half-time.

In the second half, Horsley fought back with chances from two free kicks, but the Brockham dominance resumed. Rabbetts, Pereira and Saro-Wiwa linked well up front to create more shots on goal. Walton and Tom Charman defended intelligently and initiated attacks with simple and effective passes. More goals were inevitable, especially as Saro-Wiwa asserted his authority. He picked up the ball in the Brockham half, shrugged off several tackles and slipped the ball through to an unmarked Pereira, who scored his fourth goal.

Good positioning and pressure from Cameron Boychuk forced a penalty, which Saro-Wiwa converted with a fierce shot. A further Saro-Wiwa pass left Lloyd free in front of the keeper and he duly scored. Horsley scored the final goal, but Brockham kept their concentration. A brilliant tackle by Walton in the penalty area saved a near certain second for Horsley.

In the words of manager, Jason Rabbetts, Brockham delivered “an object lesson in passing football”. In the last two games, the Badgers played a new formation with Lloyd as a holding midfielder. This has filled the early season gap in front of the defence and considerably improved the linkage between defence and attack. Meanwhile, the potent attacking threat remains – Brockham are scoring over three goals a game on average.

Team: Jamie Luckins, Tom Hampshire, Chris Walton, Tom Charman, Sam Lloyd (c), James Rabbetts, Cameron Boychuck, Felix Saro-Wiwa.

Brockham Badgers U10 Barbarians   2   Queens Park Tigers   1   (Epsom and Ewell Mini League)
Report by Jean Paul Jhugroo

The U10 Barbarians started with a new formation, moving their Captain Ashley Marshall into his favoured midfield role and Archie Knight in to left back. This clearly paid dividends in the opening five minutes with Badgers dominating play. The first attempt on goal came from a long pass from George Gomes to Nathan Hughes, whose quick feet got past two of Tigers' players but the shot was slotted into the side netting. Badgers won a free kick just out of the Tigers area and a fierce shot from Ashley Marshall went just over the crossbar.

Badgers, still dominating, won their first corner; a great cross from Ashley Marshall, headers from Luc Jhugroo, Nathan Hughes and George Fenwick, but the ball wouldn't go in the net. Another positive attack from Badgers, started by Luc Jhugroo, saw Nathan Hughes' shot saved. This allowed Tigers to launch their first attack of the game, they pushed players forward, but Cameron Wallis pulled off a diving save.

Tigers gained some confidence from possession play and pushed players forwards. They managed to open up Badgers, but Cameron Wallis jumped high to catch the ball as it was destined for the top corner of the goal. However, Tigers were now dominating and won their first corner. Badgers were unable to clear the ball and Tigers got the breakthrough, taking a one goal lead into the final minutes of the first half.

After the break, Badgers gained control with an early attempt from Lewis Wood. Further attacks from Nathan Hughes and Ashley Marshall came close to an equaliser, but Tigers' keeper was having a good game. However, Brockham got their reward when Ashley Marshall intercepted a goal kick on the half way line and hit the perfect shot into Tigers' goal.

Badgers defence pushed up allowing Archie Knight and George Gomes to play good crosses into dangerous areas and, before long, Lewis Wood scored to earn Brockham a 2-1 lead.

Although down, Tigers stepped up a gear, pushing numbers forward. Badgers only had Nathan Hughes in Tigers' half as the rest of the team were behind the ball defending deep. Tigers came close to getting the equaliser but Cameron Wallis' stubborn keeping stopped them.

Squad: Cameron Wallis, George Gomes, Nathan Hughes, Archie Knight, Luc Jhugroo, Lewis Wood, Ashley Marshall(c), Alistair Masson, George Fenwick

Player of the Week: Cameron Wallis - safest hands in Brockham!

Holmbury (Red)   1   Brockham Badgers U9 (Red)   2  (Tadworth League)
Report by Tony Moriarty

On paper a match between last season's First Division League Champions, Holmbury Reds, and this season's League leaders was always going to be a titanic tussle, and so it proved to be as both teams
contributed towards a truly outstanding football match - playing football rarely seen at this level.

On a crisp, bright morning the U9 (Red) set out with real intent, ignoring the stature of their opponents and unleashing a mesmerising attacking display. Wave upon wave of non-stop surges into the opposition half led to the opening goal after six minutes. Adam Moriarty breached the defence on the right, swept the ball in to
Birthday Boy Tom Killner, who helped it onto Jack Stradling. Six yards out, centre of goal, Jack does
not miss from here, thundering a rising shot into the top corner - nothing less than our boys deserved for
an impressive opening.

Holmbury, sensing this game could slip away, eventually found their rhythm but could not break down
a very solid defence - led by Toby Hunt with an immense holding midfield display that drew admiration
from all quarters. Toby was supported by the unstoppable Andy Kehl and Jake Graham who thwarted
everything that came anywhere near them. As the half wore on, Jack Stradling almost snatched a second, but the whistle came with our boys 1-0 nil up.

A slight reshuffle during the break saw Michael Tsimekis come on as right back, Andy Kehl move to
right midfield and Adam Moriarty taking a breather after a great first twenty minutes. Brockham started the second half as they had the first, tearing into the Holmbury defence. Andy Kehl put in his best ever performance attacking with intelligence, defending like a lion! Together with Toby Hunt he ran the show.

It was Andy's persistance that led to our second goal. Running through the opposition defence into a
difficult position on the left, Andy crossed the ball in at pace to see it take a deflection off an incoming
defender for a fortunate, but certainly deserved goal.

With ten minutes to go Holmbury managed to force a flurry of corners as they bravely tried to get
something out of this game. Their persistance paid off as they managed to force the ball home after a good
delivery from the right.

The final phase of this enthralling match saw Holmbury put on a gallant effort to snatch an improbable draw. Our defence however held firm with Michael Tsimekis and Jake Graham bravely throwing themselves in the way of several good shots - and our keeper Andrew Kensett making a breath-taking, goal-line clearance in the dying minutes.

The final whistle came much to the delight of our boys and our supporters - and with it three very well
earned points. This match really was a classic - I doubt there'll be another one quite like it for some time.
Congratulations to Holmebury and their manager for creating a really classy football team - and double
congratulations to our boys for a best ever performance. Brockham's U9 (Reds) have now won four out of four this season and with it have stretched their lead at the top of the Tadworth League First Division. Well done!

Star Player: Andrew Kensett - it's probably unfair to pick out one player after ALL the boys had such a
sensational game, but matches like these are won and lost at key moments and Andrew's critical saves when Holmbury fought back kept us in the lead. Well done Andrew!
Brockham Badgers U9 (Blue)   0   Albury Eagles   3   (Tadworth League)
Report by Graham Edwards

A score-line of 3-0 to Albury Eagles did little to reflect the play! Badgers' U9 (Blues) were technical and disciplined with individual performances of guts and determination.

Albury had some fine play and were especially solid 'on the break'.  Badgers countered with quality 'closing-down' skills and started turning the tables toward the end of the match with some well structured breaks of their own.

Overall a confident performance. The Blues are really forming a team and showed great attitude despite the defeat. They're growing in confidence by the week in what is proving to be a tough transition from last year's league.

We have introduced a Badgers 'Man of the Match' award to 'beef-up' focus on performance within the team, rather than get too hung-up on the result. Michael took it this week with his superb attitude and a hunger to make the ball 'his'.   Well done Michael.

Thanks to Albury Eagles for a well-mannered match.

Brockham Badgers U9 (White)   1   Priory Panthers   6   (Tadworth League)
Report by Simon Haines

The final score really doesn’t offer a true reflection of the match.  The U9 (Whites) worked very hard throughout this match…we were just a bit leaky at the back on the odd occasion.

The first ten minutes of the game were nip and tuck with the teams evenly matched, then the Panthers scored one and before we knew it they were four up.  The second half was highlighted by another of those beautiful goals the Badgers have a habit of scoring.  A pass down the line from the right back position to Sam Campbell; Sam surged down the line and played another ball down the line to Euan Ratcliffe running into space from the centre forward position; Euan took the ball to the by-line and put a great cross into the Panthers' penalty area - for Joel Ross-Merrick to tap in a simple goal.  Beautiful football and great teamwork.

As the game drew to its close Brockham threw caution to the wind and reverted to a 1-1-5 formation to try and get something from this game, without success, and the Panthers closed the game out with another two goals on the break.

Star player: Difficult to pick again.  Sam Campbell deserved a goal or two from this game with his excellent runs from midfield – he seems to love taking on the defence.  But I think I’ll give my nomination to Ben Cox who played in goal today.  He played extremely well and seems to know no fear, getting hurt in the first half diving at the feet of an attacker, and recovering to save some very well struck shots in the second half.  Well played Ben – and all the boys.
