Brockham Badgers U17   2   Hook Youth   4   (Epsom and Ewell Youth League Cup R1)
Report by Roger Bayliss

After a Friday evening 'curry' squad get together and team bond, the U17s were certainly not in a party mood for this League Cup match.

With an unchanged side, Brockham fell behind early to a simple worked goal (2mins). With signs the game would be a challenging match between two competitive sides, Brockham pushed forward to make an immediate response. After some good work from Cackett a chance fell to Roberts, who superbly steered the ball passed the oncoming keeper to pull the scores level (10mins). For Brockham this was to be the last action of note in what was then to become a dismal and uncharacteristic performance. The visitors continued to show more comittment and desire and went into a convincing halftime lead. Little resistance was established as Hook helped themselves, almost unchallenged to further goals (18,25 and 35 mins).

After a shocking first half, substitutes were introduced to attempt to recover some pride from the game. Improvements became clearly evident as Brockham contained a previous rampant Hook side in their own half. With far fewer threats on their own goal, Brockham players took some responsibility and showed more effort and passion. As the second half progressed, the visitors' goalkeeper was called into action far more. Despite this, Brockham were unable to create the early goal they required.

Eventually, Bryer broke through and hit an excellent shot to reduce the defecit (85mins), but this came far too late for Brockham to salvage the game and avoid crashing out of the League Cup in the first round.

Credit to Hook who were worthy winners but, on reflection, they were gifted a first round. It's a sad testimony when the opposition Manager comments at the end, "It is a shame when as a Manager you put all the time and hardwork in yet you see your lads let you down like that". A harsh statement but very true. The difference though is that I know these lads so well. Great friends for each other, great players, great lads and a credit to the club. I know they are better than this and so do they. I know they will dig deep and search hard inside themselves to put it right for next week.

Put it down to a bad day at the office.

Squad: Parker, Evans (Kelly), Nagle, Collins, Clarke, Hinchliffe, Nazer, Roberts (Mothee), Bayliss (captain), Cackett, Bryer. Injured - Yeates and Rowe.

Man of the match: Kelly - injected so much more pace and committment in the second half.
Steyning Strikers   3   Brockham Badgers U12A   5   (Horsham and District League)

The U12As got their first league win of the season with a gritty display down in Lancing, coming from behind to secure all three points with a fine second half performance.  Missing only Mitch Ward and Matt Gill from the squad, Badgers played well on a superb surface and should gain confidence from the manner in which they competed against decent opposition - especially coming hot on the heels of two solid, if unrewarded, performances against the league's two top sides.

A perfect start saw Ben Stokoe notch the first in his brace of goals as Badgers drew first blood. But Steyning came back well and first equalised, then took the lead as the game ebbed and flowed.  A goal apiece made it 3-2 to Steyning - Brockham's goal coming after a surging run from Kehl ended in an arrowed shot which gave the keeper no chance.  Just before the interval it could have got worse for Brockham when a penalty was given to Steyning, but Brockham keeper Henry Warne made a great save to keep his side in the game.

Badgers then produced a great second half, as Stokoe and Kehl both grabbed second goals of the game to put Brockham 4-3 up.  Instrumental in the turnaround were Henry Hill , Dylan Peters and Bill Rowlands.  Jack Hunt and Joe Parker also did well as Brockham held their advantage. Badgers nearly created the goal of the game as a swift flowing move was almost finished by a delightful lob from Aaron Clark.  Badgers did however add to their lead in the closing stages as Stokoe and Kehl combined to create a chance for Ryan Winter. He took the opportunity well to clinch the 5-3 victory for Brockham.

Squad:  Henry Warne, Alex Postles, Maxim Harper, Tim Whybrow, Michael Carty, Bill Rowlands, Joe Parker, Ryan Winter, Bill Rowlands, Stephen Kehl, Ben Stokoe, Henry Hill, Aaron Clark, Dylan Peters
Brockham Badgers U11A   3   Caterham Pumas   2   (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report by Simon Winter

The U11As opened up a six-point lead at the top of Epsom & Ewell Division One with a 3-2 victory over second-placed Caterham Pumas that was not as close as the scoreline suggests.

With six wins out of six, Brockham are having a great first season at 11-a-side and are playing football of the highest quality. Their defence is solid as a rock, with only three goals conceded, the midfield monopolises possession and gets the ball moving forward or out wide with a variety of options, and the goals tally is quite decent – an average of more than three goals per game, with eleven different players on the scoresheet so far.

If there is a criticism, it has to be the number of goal opportunities squandered. This game was no exception. Badgers dominated the first twenty minutes and were two up by the eleventh minute with goals from Bertie Edwards-Hedges and Liam Ratcliffe (an excellent solo effort). Further chances followed, with Brockham’s dominance clear in the way the full backs Will Mahoney and Ross Bangs were marauding down the flanks at every opportunity. But, just before half time, Caterham were allowed to get in a cross which was converted well to bring the score back to 2-1 at the break.

The second period saw more sustained pressure from Badgers and a host of chances. Brockham have no problem getting the ball in the right areas but too often, the strikers either pick out the keeper, test the strength of the woodwork or shoot too early when clean through.

This is surely a question of confidence, something George Coffey had plenty of when stroking the ball home off the base of the post to give Badgers some breathing space and a 3-1 lead. Josh Brown then whacked the other post with a fierce shot and, as in the first half, Caterham game themselves a lifeline with a well-taken lob to set up a nervy last five minutes. But Brockham held out for a win that should have been sealed much earlier.

Man of the Match:  Matt Higgins – even carrying an injury, imperious in central defence.

Squad: Matthew Batts, Will Mahoney, Alex Nicholson, Matt Higgins, Ross Bangs, Oli Winter, Harry Morland, Josh Brown, Bertie Edwards-Hedges, George Coffey, Angus Hodge, William Bletso, Dan Hetzel, Liam Ratcliffe, Ben Sawyers.

Storrington & Sullington Vipers   4   Brockham Badgers U12 (Black)   6   (Horsham and District League)

Report by Bryan Bletso

The U12 Blacks continued their high scoring league exploits with six goals away at Storrington Vipers - Badgers taking the lead early and never relinquishing it, despite some resilient play from the home team.

Badgers were two goals to the good after only three minutes; first, Henry Smith scoring from distance at an angle, then Ollie Curtis grabbing the first of his hat trick after a good through ball from Alex Ward.  Badgers relaxed though and let Storrington pull a goal back on seven minutes, after failing to clear despite given the opportunity to do so.

Nevertheless, Badgers were generally on top and chances fell to Curtis, who hit the bar, and lad of the match Tom Bletso, who forced a good save from the keeper. The lead was extended when a superb corner from Toby Dowle caused confusion in the home defence, allowing Ollie Legg to make it 3-1 from close range.  Yet again Badgers failed to keep a tight grip on their defensive line, despite a commanding performance in goal from Connor Mitchell, and Storrington's player of the match marked a great display in the game with a fine long range effort pulling the score back to 2-3.

Badgers though won the game in the final five minutes of the first half, as first Bletso pounced on another fine corner, this time from Legg, to make it 4-2 - before Curtis produced his customary clinical finish to make it 5-2 at the interval.

Some changes in positions saw Badgers start the second half slowly and Storrington capitalised on some hesitant defending to make it 3-5, but Badgers were on top with Tom Kinsey doing well at left back and Robbie Ventham back to his hard tackling self in centre defence. In midfield, Sam Norkett, David Atkinson, Bletso, Legg and Dowle controlled proceedings. Further chances were spurned before Curtis wrapped up victory with his third, and Brockham's sixth, with ten minutes to go  Storrington scored again in the closing stages, but the game was won.

The victory keeps Badgers in touch with the leaders in the division with only three points separating them from top spot. A visit to league leaders, Twin Oaks, is next.

Squad:  Connor Mitchell, Tom Kinsey, George Heymann, Robbie Ventham, DAvid Atkinson, Sam Norkett, Henry Smith, Tom Bletso, Toby Dowle, Ollie Legg, Ollie Curtis, Alex Ward, Max Ruff
South Park B   1   Brockham Badgers U11B   3  (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report by Duncan Hanwell

After having to forfeit last week’s cup match due to seven lads going down with various viruses, and another three call-offs today, the U11Bs did amazingly well to come away with a sound victory at South Park.

The outstanding thing about today’s match was the quality of all three goals scored by Brockham. It was difficult to pick the best strike. With two minutes on the clock, Andrew Watson collected a clearance outside the box, coolly looked up, and smacked the ball into the top corner of the net. The second came from Ollie Kong, seconds after South Park had equalized. From the kick off, he took the ball past three men but found himself pushed wide on the right. Turning inside, he managed to get in a powerful angled strike from 20 yards which sailed over the goalkeeper and into the far corner of the net. And Tom Moriarty completed the scoring showing excellent pace to latch onto a through ball and crash it past the advancing goalkeeper.

That said, there was a lot of resolute defending required in this physical match and, with Ed Newman missing, Luca Killner showed his strength and purpose alongside skipper Harry Kensett in the heart of defence - ably supported by some great ball-winning by Andrew Watson, and persistent tackling from Daniel (DJ) Hall, and Dan Baty.

But the man of the match award went to Michael Ellis, because he does not lose concentration when the ball is at the other end of the pitch for long periods. He didn’t need to make many saves today but, at 2-1, when the South Park centre forward finally shrugged off the Brockham defenders and powered the ball towards the bottom corner, Mike was there to touch it round the post.

Well done to all the lads today for a spirited performance. Next week it is Hook Youth at home. They are three points behind us with a game in hand. So, a tough encounter looms.

Brockham Badgers U14B   1   Horsham Sparrows   1   (Horsham and District League)
Report by Oli Goddard

It was a frosty morning for a well matched class encounter between unbeaten Sparrows and the on-form Badgers. The fans wanted a win – nobody expected a draw.

A very positive start for Brockham, with the defence like a rock and the midfield making good fast passes.  A good shot from Owen was always coming, but did not trouble the keeper.  With the voice of captain Bangs’ in their ears, Brockham kept pressing and a shot from Higgins just missed the goal.  The Sparrows looked rattled.  The midfield partnership of Knowles and Parker were playing the Sparrows midfield out of the game.  However, Brockham still needed a goal. A good moment from right winger Robins and wingback Goddard gave a chance for Brockham, but nobody could make that final touch.  A good half from all, but especially Knowles and Moorcroft.

In the second half, a great early move from Brockham gave them the goal.  A good ball from Lloyd to Robins was passed to Mackrell who couldn’t miss.  Then, a well practiced free kick was followed by a cross from Bangs and a header from Sourris which went just wide. A corner from Mackrell was flicked on by Goddard in to the path of Mansfield, but he was closed down quickly.

The game was still not over.  Pressure also came from the Sparrows and it looked like an equaliser, only for a sublime save from goalkeeper Hern to leave the Sparrows flabbergasted.   The Sparrows were also kept at bay by the Badgers' two central defenders, Thomas and Moorcroft. But they couldn’t stop the equaliser which was a powerful effort.

In the end it was two points lost for Brockham who felt on balance they might have deserved the win.

Man of the match: Knowles

Squad: Hern, Sourris, Goddard, Bangs, Moorecroft, Robins, Owen, Knowles, Parker, Higgins, Mackrell, Mansfield, Lloyd, Thomas.

Hurstpierpoint   2   Brockham Badgers U15B   4   (Horsham and District League)
Report by Phil Sheppard

The League's two most distant teams always produce the closest matches and Saturday was no different.

The first 25 minutes of the game saw both teams produce some good efforts, but the deadlock was broken by Hurstpierpoint with two goals in three minutes. Brockham re-grouped and replied within three minutes with a goal by James Boyman, provided by debutant strker Ali Turpie.

Five minutes after the inteval, Turpie himself scored after breaking from the right to level the match. There followed another 25 minutes of non-stop action from both sides, but it was Josh Evans - scoring his first goal for the Badgers - who headed home from ten yards following a Bradley Cullen corner.

Turpie collected his second a few minutes later, but the game was not yet over as Hurstpierpoint pressed again and were awarded a penalty for a shove in the box. Keeper Navid Tomlinsion guessed correctly and, with a superb save, kept Badgers' two goal advantage.

With an injured Turpie substituted and Badgers going to five at the back, they shut up shop to give the U15Bs their second win of the season.

Squad: Navid Tomlinson, Dan Chipps, Harry Sheppard, Will King, Harry Knight, Peter Higson, Bradley Cullen, Josh Evans, Ghilas Lounis, Luke Russell-Smith, James Boyman, Jake Hardwick, Ali Turpie.
