West Sutton Rangers   2   Brockham Badgers U17   10   (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report by Roger Bayliss

After last week's disappointment, slight changes were made to the line-up, bringing a dramatic effect.

Brockham started the game without top scorer Bryer who was out with an injury butm within the first fifteen minutes, Cackett had helped himself to a hat-trick on 7, 10 and 15. Prior to this Hinchliffe, after five minutes, slipped the ball past the oncoming keeper to open the scoring as Brockham raced towards a goal glut.

Brockham continued to tear away at the home team defence with some awesome play, a return to the form of their opening fixture of the season. Free flowing football, resulting from a set game plan, provided Cackett with two further goals on 31 and 40 minutes. Previous to this, in a rare attack, Sutton were awarded a disputed penalty. Going into half time this took the score to 1-6 in Brockham's favour.

In the second half, Brockham settled their play a little more. Repeated attacks were thwarted with stunning saves from the Sutton goalkeeper.  However, Brockham pushed on patiently and were rewarded from a hard drive from Bayliss (50). Shortly after, many corners bombarded the home defence and Nagel scored his first goal for Brockham with a solid header (65). Cackett later added a ninth and his sixth of the game (75). To complete the scoring, Kelly created a well earned chance and steered the ball past the oncoming keeper (85). There was one more goal to come, this time a consolation for Sutton as Brockham lost concentration, possibly from the enormity of what they had just achieved.

Congratulations for what was a total team effort over the full 90 minutes.

Squad: Parker, Evans, Collins, Rowe, Nagle, Yates (Clarke), Roberts, Kelly, Bayliss (captain), Hinchliffe, Cackett.

Man of the Match: Nagle with a stunning goal and yet another solid performance. His first goal for the club too. Special mention and congratulations to Cackett for a double hat-trick. On the day, he was a handful and uncontrollable. Awesome!!!

Ewhurst Juniors   0   Brockham Badgers U14B   6   (Horsham and District League)
Report by Oli Goddard; Pictures by Dave Penny

After a hard fought game with East Grinstead, the U14Bs hoped to record their first win of the campaign. With Owen leading the team, everybody expected him to put in a great performance and he did - winning man of the match in the process.

In the early minutes of the first half, Brockham produced some slick passing with Parker pulling the strings in midfield.  Owen made a surging run and produced a great cross, but the strikers couldn’t connect, perhaps missing the injured Mackrell.

The first clear chance fell to Brightman who struck the ball into the keepers arms. By this time, Brockham needed a goal and it looked like it was going to come when a lofted ball went over the top to Goddard, but his shot forced a fine save from the keeper.  Neat passing produced a chance for Moorcroft who shot just wide of the post.

Then good work from Robins on the right hand side set up a Parker shot which went into the top left hand corner. Penny kept on shooting, narrowly missing every time.  Another shot from Parker led to a fumble by the keeper and Brightman's first goal for Brockham. In a few minutes it was 3-0 when Parker scored his second with a great finish into the bottom right hand corner.  For the second week running the defence looked strong and never looked like putting a foot wrong in a comfortable first half.

A sensational start to the second half produced a Brockham goal within seven seconds! From kick off a good ball was played to Thomas, who punted it to Parker, who crossed for Bangs, whose effort was saved - only for the ball to be poked in by Sourris.  After this Brockham looked by far the better team but, to give credit to Ewhurst, they never gave up.

A good shot from Thomas made everybody think it would be 5-0.....and it was a few minutes later when Goddard was put through on goal by Parker's good ball, and he cheekily lobbed the keeper.  Two minutes from the end Goddard scored his second with a half volley from an angle, after a great ball from Bangs.

Through the whole match keeper Hern had not touched the ball – meaning he was not a man of the match candidate!

Squad: Hern, Goddard, Bangs, Thomas, Sourris, Owen (c), Parker, Moorcroft, Robins, Penny, Brightman.

Man of the Match:  Owen

Brockham Badgers U15A   8   Steyning Strikers   1   (Horsham and District League)
Report by Gordon Walker

In a similar start to last weeks match, Brockham took an early 2 - 0 lead after just seven minutes. An impressive display of passing football meant that by half time the score had increased to 5 - 0 and the tie was effectively over.

Steyning emerged from the break more determined, but it was too little too late and the consolation goal was partly due to Brockham losing shape, as members of the defence went absent whilst looking to get on the score sheet.

There were good displays by a number of the team, but Jonathan Ellis needs a special mention for his tireless work rate and assists in a number of the goals.

Squad: Walker, Mizzi, Hunt, Spooner, Davies, Miller, Jarrett, Purcell, Merritt, Shaw ©, Ellis, Pellman, Tompkins, Wood.

Ashington Cougars   5   Brockham Badgers U12A   3   (Horsham and District League)

Badgers U12As lost out narrowly in yet another away game this season, running Ashington Cougars close all the way and overcoming a slow start to almost snatch a late draw in a tight fixture.  Having lost their previous game by one goal in five, Badgers will be hoping their luck can change over the coming weeks.

Missing several players due to unavailability, Brockham were down to twelve players and started the game slowly. Ashington's talented striker twice slipped the offside trap to run unopposed on the Badgers' goal, giving keeper Henry Warne little chance as the Cougars went 2-0 up.

A rare slip by Warne led to a third before half time, but Badgers were now making chances of their own. Stephen Kehl hit the bar and then an own goal by an Ashington defender, under pressure from Kehl, gave Brockham hope going into the break.

Joe Parker made a good run down the right early in the second half, crossing to Kehl, who pulled the scoreline back to 3-2, but Ashington added a fourth midway through the half.  Kehl hit the bar once more before notching his second of the game, to really put Badgers back in the hunt at 4-3.

It looked like Brockham might get their reward for a great come back as they put pressure on the home goal, with Bill Rowlands, Henry Hill and Ryan Winter all rising to the occasion.  But, late on, the Cougars made it 5-3 to give the scoreline a slightly flattering look and deny Brockham the comeback that their performance deserved.

Despite the defeat, the boys could take comfort from their overall performance, having set themselves a tough task by conceding the early goals.

Brockham Badgers U12 (White)   3   Billingshurst Youth   7   (Horsham and District League)

Billingshurst probably came to Brockham expecting an easy game, as they had convincingly beaten the team that Badgers lost to last week - but they were in for a surprise.

Badgers got off to a brisk start and it wasn’t long before Ollie Smith ran through from the halfway line to force a fine save from the Billingshurst keeper. Shortly afterwards, Daniel Hoad beat the offside trap to run through on goal only to be blocked by the advancing keeper. Brockham continued to press forward and, on ten minutes Liam Doyle, intercepted the ball and passed through to Ollie Smith whose perfectly angled shot into the far corner of the net gave Brockham a well deserved lead. Smith was unlucky not to get a second three minutes later, when the keeper made another fine save.

The tide turned for the last ten minutes of the half with Billingshurst forcing a fine save from Jack Whetnall on 19 minutes and, a minute later, the equaliser came as the ball was blasted into the goal, giving Whetnall no chance. Despite the ensuing Billingshurst onslaught, great defending by George Duckworth, Daniel Ryan, Joe Stradling and Giles Clarke ensured that the score remained level at half time.

Billingshurst started the second half strongly, scoring two goals in the first two minutes - one of which was a superb header from the six yard line. But competition was restored on 35 minutes when Edward Smith surged through from midfield and his shot, although almost saved by the keeper, trickled over the line to make it 2-3.

Jack Whetnall made a great save a minute later but, unfortunately ,Billingshurst were first to the loose ball to restore their two goal advantage. This prompted another period of pressure from the away team which saw them score twice more, to make it 2-6.

The last period of the game saw Badgers having more of the possession again. With Harry Roberts, Liam Doyle, Otto Young, Stefan Issberner and Joshua Hook controlling the midfield, they created two more great chances for Edward Smith - the first thwarted by a great save, the second stopped by the post. Josh Caldwell and Hoad worked hard up front and, when Hoad was brought down in the box, he stepped up to convert a great penalty into the bottom right hand corner.

The game ended cruelly with Billingshurst snatching another goal with virtually the last kick of the game to complete a 7-3 win.

Lad of the Match: Ollie Smith.

Squad: Jack Whetnall, Liam Doyle, Joe Stradling, George Duckworth, Daniel Hoad, Giles Clarke, Josh Caldwell, Ollie Smith, Otto Young, Joshua Hook, Edward Smith, Daniel Ryan, Harry Roberts, Stefan Issberner.

Greenway   4   Brockham Badgers U12 (Black)   3   (Horsham and District League)
Report by Bryan Bletso

The U12 (Blacks) lost their unbeaten start to the season with a narrow defeat at Greenway, Badgers almost coming from 4-1 down for the second time in a fortnight - but just failing to force a result.

Brockham will blame their slow start, which saw them go 2-0 behind in only three minutes, along with a freak goal that saw keeper Connor Mitchell clear his lines powerfully - only for the ball to richochet off  unlucky incoming defender James Morgan and loop over the keeper, giving them a mountain to climb at 4-1 down early in the second half.

Last week it was Brockham who surged into an early lead, but this week Badgers paid for some slack defending when two clearances from the Greenway keeper, on a small pitch, bounced over the defence to leave their striker one-on-one with Brockham's first half keeper George Corfield.  Badgers have an excellent team spirit though and, driven on by captain Thomas Bletso and a great performance from right sided midfielder Ollie Legg, they were soon on top. Henry Smith first unluckily hit the post from distance, then turned in a cross from Legg to put Brockham back in the game.

An injury to central defender David Atkinson saw James Morgan make his first appearance of the season alongside Robbie Ventham, who is starting to recapture the form that saw him dominate the Brockham defence last year.  On the stroke of half time Corfield pulled off a great save to keep it at 2-1.

The second half saw Badgers start strongly, but a well taken goal from a rare Greenway attack restored their two goal advantage five minutes after the interval.  Almost immediately, Brockham conceded that freak fourth goal and this stirred the team into a great response.  First Thomas Bletso scored from distance, then William Bletso just chipped over the advancing keeper, but also the bar, as Brockham turned the screw.  Fellow striker Ollie Curtis also went close before Toby Dowle, putting in a determined second half display, won a penalty, which was coolly despatched.

It was all Brockham now but, in the end, the U11 (Blacks) ran out of time and suffered their first defeat of the season.

Squad: George Corfield, Tom Kinsey, George Heymann, Max Ruff, David Atkinson, Robbie Ventham, Connor Mitchell, Thomas Bletso, Ollie Legg, Toby Dowle, Ollie Curtis, Henry Smith, James Morgan, William Bletso
Brockham Badgers U12 Girls   7   Tooting & Mitcham Girls   3   (League Cup Preliminary Round)
Report by Gordon Walker

With Brockham only just having enough players for this League Cup encounter, a number of the team were forced to play outside of their normal positions.

A slightly nervous first half saw Brockham take a two goal lead and then allow Tooting back into the game to level the score by half time.

However, Brockham came out much more determined in the second half. Emilly Walker in goal gained confidence as the game progressed, and Alice Beadle and Kate Walker were impressive in defence - despite the fact none of them were in their preferred positions. Tilly Leney scored once and assisted in a number of the goals, which included four by Miriam Mizzi and two by Ella Mothee. Claire Weatherston also had her best game of the season so far.

Squad: Emilly Walker, Kate Walker, Alice Beadle, Miriam Mizzi, Tilly Leney (c), Ella Mothee, Claire Weatherston.
