Brockham Badgers U17   6   Old Wimbledonians   2   (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report by Roger Bayliss

In what was the U17 squad's first league game, the season failed to kick start until the second half. Using the old cliche, it was a game of two halves.

Now in the stronger Epsom and Ewell League, Brockham's first game was against Old Wimbledonians - a team that lost just two league games last season and scored in excess of a hundred goals as they won the championship.

The signs looked ominous as Brockham soon went 2-0 down and struggled to shape the play and formation. However a superb strike from Cackett pulled a goal back just before the break and a stern half time talk highlighted the shortfalls.

From the restart, Brockham totally dominated and for the next 45 minutes totally controlled the game. Playing superb football, the Badgers soon drew level through another strike from Cackett. With continuing pressure, a free kick was forced 35 years out in a central position. Tom Bayliss lined up and rifled a shot off the cross bar past the helpless Wimbledon keeper in what already could be contender for goal of the season. Perhaps he was looking to emulate his father who scored with a similar effort the day before!!!

Now playing what can only be described as 'total quality football', Brockham ripped into the visitors at every opportunity. Two further goals were disallowed before Bryer helped himself to a second-half hat-trick, with the final goal following a build up in excess of twenty passes.

Matt Parker was as secure as ever in goal. A defence of Rowe, Evans and Nagle were superbly marshalled by Collins. The midfield of Yeates (replaced by Bryer), Kelly, Mothy, Roberts and Bayliss worked tirelessly throughout. Up front, Bryer and Cackett had a goal rout. The performance in the second half was nothing short of breathtaking and sets the squad up for their next home game.

Special mention to Nagle and Roberts who were magnificant on their debuts.

Man of the match:  Keely - for his tireless running.
Lingfield   4   Brockham Badgers U13A   2   (Horsham and District League)
Report by Sandra Mackrell

An uphill struggle faced the depleted nine- man squad of the U13As in their first match of the season.

With initial pressure coming from the Lingfield forwards, the metal of the upright and the bar saved the Badgers from being behind with only ten minutes gone.  However, the gritty performance of the whole team and some accurate passing to Smith, who controlled the ball and slotted through to Mackrell to take the lead, meant the Badgers got the upper hand.

With an injured Morrison in goal, the Brockham defence was weakened and continued pressure from Lingfield soon told and they equalised in the 20th minute.  However, determination from Coffey who split the Lingfield defence passing to the incoming Mackrell, made it 2-1 to the Badgers.

Minutes into the second half and reviewed vigour from the home team made it 2–2. Again the metal saved further goals against the Badgers.  With tiring legs but a ‘never say die’ attitude, the Badgers kept the score at 2-2 until the 25th minute of the second half when Lingfield took the lead, adding a fourth in the dying minutes of the game.  Nevertheless, it was a fantastic performance all round, and man of the match went to Killner.

Squad: Morrison, Coffey, Tsimekis, Swaine, Allsop, Killner, Mackrell, Wright, Smith

Brockham Badgers U12A   1   Southwater (Red)   4   (Horsham and District League)

After winning promotion to the Horsham and District A division last season, the U12As started the new league with a tough assignment against last year's runners up Southwater (Red).  The fact that Badgers matched such distringuished opponents in many respects (despite missing several players) and only really saw the game slip away in the final minutes bodes well for the season ahead as they attempt to find their feet at this level.

The first half began with Badgers under pressure as Southwater came at them strongly, but Brockham held firm, with Henry Warne again put in a strong display of goalkeeping. They gradually pushed forward, with Stephen Kehl squeezing the ball just wide following a good solo run midway through the half.  However, on 15 minutes, Southwater took the lead. The remainder of the half was evenly contested, with Jack Hunt playing as emergency centre half and doing some outstanding work in the middle of the Brockham defence. Maxim Harper and Joe Parker, making his debut in the black and white stripes, also did well throughout the game.

The second half began in great fashion for the Badgers with an equaliser in the first minute. Alex Postles fed Ryan Winter whose mazy run down the left saw him cross for lad of the match Henry Hill to latch on to the ball and level the scores.

Southwater reacted well and two quick goals put them in a commanding position, despite some good chances still falling to Brockham.  As the game went on, Brockham seemed to assert themselves and were unlucky not to reduce the arrears when a Mitchell Ward free kick was headed home, only to be ruled off side.

Southwater completed the scoring, somewhat against the run of play, with five minutes to go - but the U12As will be encouraged with the performance in the circumstances.

Fetcham Ionians   1   Brockham Badgers U11A   5   (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report by Simon Winter

Simon Coffey and his U11s have been looking forward to playing 11-a-side for what seems an eternity. With much expectation of a good season ahead, the day finally arrived for the U11As on a sloping Fetcham pitch which Brockham were obliged to run up in the first half. It seemed to make little difference as they proceeded to enjoy long spells of possession, Fetcham falling foul of the offside rule three times in the first ten minutes.

Brockham’s passing was good, Matt Higgins and Alex Nicholson were solid at the back and several clear chances were carved out but wasted. Despite a near monopoly of possession for the first 25 minutes, Badgers were made to pay for some sloppy defensive work just before the break when a long ball from the wing hit a post and was turned in at close range to give Fetcham a 1-0 half-time lead.

Strong words during the break and a switch for Josh Brown from right to left wing brought immediate results - Brown scoring sweetly with his left foot just a few minutes in. Badgers maintained the pressure and, two minutes later, forced the home defence into conceding an own goal. Several more surging runs down the left saw Brown putting in some decent crosses, but Fetcham eventually got down the other end and forced an excellent one-handed save from the otherwise untroubled Matthew Batts.

This was as close as the home side would come to getting back in the game as Brockham took a firm grip, Angus Hodge slotting in well at left back and Harry Morland, Oli Winter and, later, Liam Ratcliffe winning the midfield battle and getting the ball wide whenever possible.

George Coffey made it 3-1 with a fine run and left-foot shot, Winter saw a speculative lob from the edge of the box drop just under the bar, and Brown completed the rout with a fine solo run and shot to make it 5-1. There was still time for Will Mahoney to hit a post and, at the final whistle, there was a definite feeling that the first half had been out of last season’s scrapbook, whilst the second was the U11As as they hope to perform all this season.

Lad of the Match:  Josh Brown - an all-action performance on both wings and two goals.

Squad: Matthew Batts, William Mahoney, Alex Nicholson, Matthew Higgins, Ross Bangs, Josh Brown, Oli Winter, Harry Morland, Bertie Edwards-Hedges,George Coffey, Angus Hodge, William Bletso, Daniel Hetzel,

Liam Ratcliffe

Copthorne   4   Brockham Badgers U12 (Black)   4   (Horsham and District League)

Report by Bryan Bletso

After finishing strongly last season, the U12 (Blacks) were looking for a good start to the new campaign.  Welcoming Connor Mitchell and Oliver Legg to the side, but missing four first team regulars, the Badgers must have wondered what they had let themselves in for as, within fifteen minutes they found themselves 3-0 down - despite shading possession and chances.  Nothing seemed to be going right as Copthorne broke three times in identical fashion, putting their striker one-on-one with first-half keeper George Corfield, and leaving the Badgers reeling through some clinical finishing.

Yet Badgers were creating good chances, some well worked corner routines almost leading to goals. Oliver Curtis was leading the line well and at last got his reward when he latched on to a through ball from Thomas Bletso to surge past two defenders and pull a goal back just before half time.

With Mitchell and David Atkinson doing a sterling job in the middle of the defence, and full backs Tom Kinsey and George Heymann giving their all, Badgers came out for the second half in determined mood. They soon scored again to make it 3-2, with Max Ruff netting his first goal for the club from close range after the keeper had blocked the first shot.

Copthorne were still dangerous on the break and a goal midway through the half (which second-half keeper Henry Smith could do little about) seemed to have sealed the victory. But Brockham showed last season that they have plenty of spirit and, urged on by Bletso, Oliver Legg, and Alex Ward, they would not give up.

When Corfield scored with eight minutes to go, spritning on to another Bletso through ball, the great escape was on - and a deserved equaliser was snatched when Corfield again used his pace to great effect, side-footing past the keeper to make it 4-4 with three minutes remaining.

Even then, Brockham could have won it - Bletso using his strength well to thread a ball into the path of Curtis who had an unopposed path to goal but was flagged for a close off side.

All in all an exciting way for the team to begin the season against very sporting opponents. The character in the U12 (Blacks) shone through once more, to produce a great comeback of which the lads can be proud.
Brockham Badgers U11B   1   Woodmansterne Hyde B   0   (Epsom and Ewell Youth League)
Report by Trevor Reaveley

A warm welcome greeted Woodmansterne to Brockham for the first match of the season. The weather was warm and spirits were high as the boys readied themselves for the kick off.

Brockham got off to a tremendous start with wave-after-wave of attacks on the opposition goal. The effort paid off after ten minutes when a clinical finish from Axel made it 1-0. Five minutes later, in what seemed to be Woodmansterne's first real attack, they had the ball in the back of the net, only for what would have been a very good goal to be called offside. Once again Brockham went on the attack and pinned back Woodmansterne for the rest of the half.

Woodmansterne came out the strongest after the break and it was a good five minutes before the ball even got out of the Brockham half - but, when it did, there were some fine attempts on goal with Tim Hines, Dan Crook and Thomas Moriarty at the forefront. Yet it was one of our defensive midfielders, Dan Baty, who came closest when his header from a corner skimmed past the post.

It was a more evenly contested second half, but the established central defensive line up of Harry Kensett and Ed Newman marshalled the back line well and saw us safely to the finish.

All in all, a good start to the season. No one can complain about a 1-0 victory but a few more decisive passes and awareness of the team around could have seen us with possibly five or more goals.

Player Of The Day: Ed Newman

Plenty of goalmouth action (top) - unfortunately much of it in the wrong goalmouth! But the U12As battled hard against tough oppnents and can look forward to the coming season with confidence.

Brockham Badgers U12 Girls    12    Tooting & Mitcham Girls    0    (Surrey County Girls League)
Report by Gordon Walker

An historic day for Brockham Badgers as the Under 12 girls played in their very first league match.

The result too was something of a shock with Brockham winning 12 - 0 against Tooting & Mitcham.

Tooting & Mitcham were however unfortunate to have lost players in the run up to the game and came to the match without a full team. Brockham on the other hand were at full strength and took full advantage of the situation.

Good performances all round helped maximise a result that is unlikely to be bettered this season.

Squad:     Emilly Walker, Ellie Rowlands, Rachael Woodman, Tilly Leney, Kate Walker, Alice Beadle,   Ella Mothee, Miriam Mizzi, Jenny Sourris.

Brockham Badgers U15A   6   Ockley Acorns   0   (Horsham and District League)
Report by Gordon Walker

Brockham comfortably won this local derby. Despite the score it was a well-contested match - if for no other reason than a number of the players from both teams go to the two Dorking Schools.

A combination of the move up to a size five ball, a hard pitch and lack of match fitness seemed to trouble both sides throughout the game, with many passes going astray and general ball control not up to the usual standard - but the tackling was certainly fully committed by both sides.

However Brockham were generally dominant and managed to go in at half time with a two-goal advantage. Despite some pressure from Ockley in the early second half, Brockham regained control and made sure with a further four goals.

Squad:  Stewart Walker, Theo Mizzi, Tom Hunt, James Davies, Alex Spooner, Martyn Merritt, Andrew Miller, Callum Purcell, Michael Shaw, Jonathan Ellis, Jamie Pellman, James Walker, Jordan Wood, Thomas Woodcock.

Attacking and defending....the U14Bs saw action at both ends of the pitch, but eventually went down 6-2 to Copthorne.
