U13 Black 3 - 1 Rudgwick
by Bryan Bletso |
|
Brockham Badgers U13 Black overcame Rudgwick on Saturday, an improved second half performance seeing the side take all three points after a sluggish first period.
Brockham have been in good form of late, and this win makes it three wins in the last four games. With Brockham having run the league leaders all the way the previous week with a strong showing, it was therefore surprising to see the boys labour through the first half. The wind which swirled in varying strengths throughout the game, perhaps proved a factor in the first half perfomance, which was only lit up by a stunning free kick by Ollie Legg midway through the half to bring Brockham level.
Brockham started steadily, but Rudgwick took the lead on fifteen minutes when the Brockham defence failed to anticipate a kick out by goalie George Corfield. Five minutes later, Brockham won a free kick a full thirty yards from goal. Up stepped Legg, his powerful shot sailing into the top right hand corner of the Rugdwick net for a fantastic equaliser.
Rugdwick finished the first period the stronger, but during the half time talk, the Brockham boys were quick to point out where they felt they had gone wrong, and a good response from the side saw Brockham get on top almost from the kick off in the second period, aided by a favourable wind direction. Rudgwick only really managed one serious chance in the second period, but Brockham were able to create a fair number of good openings, including a great diving header from captain Connor Mitchell who had come up for a corner ten minutes into the second half.
Now in the lead, Brockham looked to increase their advantage, with Smith, Dowle, Curtis, Ward and Heyman all going close before, several minutes from time, leading scorer Ollie Curtis scored from a narrow angle close in to make the game safe.
Special mention should go to keeper George Corfield who kept good concentration in the game, and pulled out a vital save at 2-1 after a long period of inactivity, while centre back David Atkinson once more proved tigerish in defence. Holding midfielder Robbie Ventham was one of the keys to the improved second half with an intelligent display, but lad of the match went to Max Ruff with an assured display at right back, including some vital interceptions and great use of the ball when in possession. |

Kingstonian Youth Royals 1 - 3 U12A
by Simon Winter
|
|
Brockham Badgers U12A earned a terrific win in atrocious conditions at Kingstonian Youth Royals. With a strong cross-wind in the first half and an increasingly slippery pitch, both teams were equally handicapped but it was Brockham who acclimatised the quickest, playing some smart passing moves and taking a two-goal lead within the first seven minutes.
First, George Coffey played a strong ball across the box which Josh Brown controlled well before dispatching confidently across the keeper and into the far corner.
Then, in a similar move, Harvey Mewis played in William Bletso who, from the same right-hand angle of the area, powered a shot over the keeper and into the net. Badgers continued to dominate the half, allowing Kingstonian few sorties upfield, to the extent that at the interval, Brockham keeper Matthew Batts resorted to hot chocolate rather than a cold drink! Badgers were more often than not first to the ball and, despite the conditions, managed to maintain a good passing game.
It was a game that called for sleeves rolled up and gritted teeth, epitomised not least by Liam Ratcliffe, whose battling display in midfield earned him the Man of the Match. Late on in the half, the home side did begin to find their feet, and would have pulled a goal back but for a desperate lunging clearance by Will Mahoney at the foot of the post.
Things were about to get tougher, however, with the wind deciding to blow the increasingly heavy rain straight into the Badgers’ faces in the second half. The Royals soon took advantage, finding the net only a minute in with a smart shot into the corner out of the reach of the diving Batts. An equaliser looked on the cards, as the Brockham defence repulsed a number of Kingstonian attacks. Matt Higgins was prominent with some strong covering tackles and clearances and Matthew Batts was called on to come off his line and clear up on several occasions.
The travelling supporters had to endure not only the foul weather but also a tense second half, but gradually Brockham reasserted themselves and succeeded in pushing play back into the opposing half. The win was finally secured minutes from time when Bertie Edwards-Hedges smashed the ball into the net to give Brockham a richly-deserved 3-1 victory, showing that they can tough it out when the conditions demand it.
Squad: Matthew Batts, Will Mahoney, Matt Higgins, Alex Nicholson, Ross Bangs, Angus Hodge, Josh Brown, Oli Winter, Harvey Mewis, Liam Ratcliffe, Bertie Edwards-Hedges, George Coffey, William Bletso, Dan Hetzel.

U12B 2 - 1 Lingfield Youth Panthers
by Trevor Reaveley
|
|
It's been said many times by the TV pundits, but this certainly was a game of two halves.
Kicking into the low winter sun, Brockham started well below par against quite a physical Panthers team. Wave after wave of Lingfield attacks were cutting straight through the heart of Brockham. There was no organisation, commitment or determination in the Badgers' ranks. Without a doubt, all players were playing well below their best, with the exception of our 'keeper, Michael Ellis, who kept us in the game on numerous occassions, one particularly fine double save in the closing moments bringing applause from both home and away spectators and leaving us lucky to reach half time without conceding.
A slightly invigorated (and verbally chastened) Badgers team came out for the second half, and from the restart you could see that there was a bit more fire and determination there - not much, but a few glowing embers.
As the half progressed we started to have a bit more authority, we were attacking the ball just that little bit faster, the passing was crisper and marking was tighter. Tim Hines had a fine shot on goal superbly tipped onto the post by their keeper (who had an excellent game with his one-on-ones with Ollie Kong).
Lingfield were still having their runs on our goal though, and it was one of these forays ten minutes from the end that brought the first goal and put Brockham on the back foot having to chase the game, normally something they’re not very good at.
But this time it seemed it spur Brockham on and all of a sudden it was much closer to the Badgers we've become used to this season. A clearance from Lingfield came to the feet of Tom Moriarty. He passed to Tim Hines who hit an 'up and under' for Jamie Hanwell to latch onto and flick past the keeper. One-all and 'game on' for the last five minutes.
It was that man Ollie Kong again who put us in the lead with two minutes to go with a lovely little side foot past the onrushing 'keeper, having beaten the offside flag, which had been going against him for the whole match.
Back to our normal defensive formation for the rest of the match, we never looked like giving the slight lead away and finished winners again. A fortunate win considering the poor first half, but judging the second half the lads deserved it - especially having to come from behind.
Player of the Day went to Jamie Hanwell for some very good and consistent work down the wing and his fine goal. |

AFC Wimbledon 2 - 4 U11A
by Paul Walton
|
|
Brockham Badgers U11A were flattered by a 4-2 score line against a ten man AFC Wimbledon. Manager Jason Rabbetts summed up the Brockham performance as “very tired and ragged”, but moments of quality from Jordan Martin and William Pereira saved the day.
Following their usual pattern, Brockham started lethargically. Wimbledon’s greater energy masked their numerical disadvantage, but both sides were unable to create good chances.
It was fifteen minutes before Brockham keeper, James Rabbetts, touched the ball and soon afterwards Brockham started to find their game. A pinpoint cross from Chris Walton gave Martin a good chance, but his shot was just wide. An excellent diagonal ball from player of the week Ashley Marshall put Martin through with just the keeper to beat. His chip was unerring. Minutes later Brockham worked the ball up to Luke Brightman who laid the ball square for Martin to crash wide of the keeper.
As they played out the first half, Brockham were dominant, but in the second half their organisation and fluency vanished. Despite their shortage, Wimbledon played an attractive passing game, using space effectively and forcing Brockham to defend very deep. The pressure paid off and Wimbledon pulled a goal back. Only a desperate save by Rabbetts in goal kept Brockham ahead.
With a full squad available, manager Rabbetts was able to cycle his players and eventually Wimbledon’s tiredness began to tell. With Wimbledon committed to attack, Pereira pick up the ball on half way and score Brockham’s third. Some sloppy Brockham defending gave away another goal, but just before the final whistle, Pereira freed Sam Lloyd who was able to take advantage of a depleted Wimbledon defence.
Player of the Week: Ashley Marshall.
Captain's Comment:
"Brockham played AFC Wimbledon. We started off with good goals from excellent passes through to the attackers by myself and Lewis, making it 2-0 to us in the first half. But, in the second half, we weren’t as strong. But in the end we won 4-2."

Nutfield Youth 0 - 4 U10A
by Andrew Kehl (U10 player)
|
|
The first half was fairly evenly matched with both sides having some good chances. Harry Morris showed his skill with some good trickery creating chances for the rest of the team. Alfie Edwards made some good breaks down the wing and James Hawkins supported well and saw a couple of shots go narrowly wide.
At half time, manager Lewis Evans brought on Dominic O’Brien, Tommy Gill and Will Hearn.
Nutfield played a long ball straight from the start. Keeper Ben Giles gathered it cleanly and sent a long ball up to winger Will Hearn who set off on a winding run to win a corner. A great delivery by Dom O’Brien led to a knock back by Gill then Kehl stabbed it home.
Badgers then stepped up the tempo and the two wingers, O’Brien and Hearn, created more chances for Gill and Kehl.
Set plays were the key for Badgers. Soon after, Badgers were awarded another corner which lead to Kehl’s second goal.
After the goal, Badgers lost concentration and Nutfield surged forward, a brilliant tackle from Louis Clark prevented a certain goal opportunity. This shook Badgers back into action with nice passing moves that put Nutfield under pressure to concede another corner. O’Brien delivered the ball directly to Kehl’s head for his hatrick.
Minutes later Kehl scored a volley from yet another great O’Brien corner. A good performance by Michel Tsmekis and Louis Clark in defence allowed Nutfield few chances, however in the dying minutes of the match keeper Ben Giles pulled off a fantastic save, stretching to save a great shot from the Nutfield attacker. |

Albury Griffins 3 - 0 U9 Red
by Belgin Dogansoy
|
|
Brockham started quickly with their attack which saw Dogansoy powering a shot to be superbly saved by Albury’s keeper. Albury also had an opportunity but Brockham’s defence kept its shape.
Albury pressed on vigorously. A long shot was saved bravely by Vaughan, but only as far as an Albury forward to tap in their first goal. Brockham found themselves defending for the rest of the first half to keep the score down, superb clearances by Ford and Dogansoy showed their presence in midfield.
But the second half saw Brockham with heads up high, attacking with vengeance. Ford found Dogansoy who walloped a shot that was pushed out by Albury’s goalie. The resulting corner swung inward towards Ruff, whose shot went just wide of Albury’s near post.
Albury’s big goal kick saw Brockham struggle to shut down the ball and led to a second goal. Still Brockham did not give up, a superb cross by Dogansoy found Collis for his shot to be denied by an Albury defender only as far as Ford whose shot swayed just above the bar.
Brockham conceded a minor tap in to go 3-0 down with ten minutes left, but they still battled on with pure passion. The Badgers had many more chances, two good corners by Dogansoy were positioned too accurately into the goalie’s hands. But, despite umpteen attacks right to the closing seconds, Brockham couldn’t find the net.
The Badgers did not deserve such a defeat, with every player showing great passion and not giving up. It was a great all round team performance against the league leaders and a shame this did not show in the score.
Man of the match went to Matthew Ford for great attacking play.

U8 White 2 - 1 Mogador Rangers
by Chris Hurst
|
|
If the crowd noise level was anything to go by, this was going to be an exciting match – it did not disappoint! From the first whistle this was truly end-to-end stuff – hats off to both sets of defenders who had to endure a barrage of attacks from the opposition.
The Brockham goalkeeper, Miles Fin, had to make some early saves, but it was his |
|
outstretched hand, just deflecting a stinging shot destined for the top right hand corner, that drew applause from both sets of spectators.
It was going to take something special to break the deadlock. Brockham’s Cameron Swayne had already made a couple breaks, which had been snuffed out by Mogador’s defence. However this time he managed to fire off a shot which was well parried by the goalkeeper, only for Theo Edwards to slot the ball home (1-0).
Mogador then proceeded to launch a number of offences which were well resisted by Brockham. The pressure went up the other end and a Brockham throw in to Edwards, on the right hand side, set him off towards goal, around a couple of defenders before neatly placing the ball into the net
(2-0).
The second half saw plenty of spirit from Mogador and the young players were deservedly rewarded with an early goal (2-1). They continued to attack and an excellent save by replacement goalkeeper Tony Cooper’s knee, towards the end of the game, was all that prevented a draw.
Both teams should be proud of the effort they put in, battling to the end. I’m sure the vociferous, but very supportive crowd, look forward to the return fixture!
