U13 Bk 7 - 2 Hurstpierpoint Colts

Brockham Badgers Black U13s secured all three points at Dorking FC's Meadowbank ground on Saturday with a comprehensive win over Hurstpierpoint. Ollie Curtis notched another hatrick in a good attacking display by Badgers.  The win builds on the away draw secured in their last league outing and makes it a win and 2 draws from the 5 league games played to date.

Brockham were ahead after only two minutes, with Ollie Legg hitting an unstoppable shot from outside the box. Brockham were playing some exciting stuff and had several chances to extend their lead before the visitors scored with their first attack of the game to level the scores on ten minutes.

Brockham were undeterred though and Legg bagged his second on twenty minutes, slotting home after Ollie Curtis had hit the post.  An own goal then made it 3-1, before Curtis glanced home captain Connor Mitchell's free kick to make it 4-1 on the half hour.

On the stroke of half time, Hurstpierpoint scored a fine free kick from outside the area to reduce the arrears, and give the visitors hope of a come back in the second period.

The opening of the second half was even, but it was Brockham who made the game safe with Curtis's hatrick ten minutes after the restart.  Sub William Bletso then grabbed the sixth goal before Toby Dowle scored his first of the season with a shot from outside the area, which curled into the top corner of the net past the advancing keeper.

Team: George Corfield, Tom Kinsey, Sam Norkett, David Atkinson, Connor Mitchell, Robbie Ventham, Toby Dowle, Henry Smith, Ollie Curtis, Ollie Legg, Max Ruff, George Heymann

Epsom Eagles 3 - 0 U12A
by Simon Winter

Surrey Youth League Cup R1

Brockham Badgers U12A could not clear the hurdle of higher league opposition in the shape of Epsom Eagles but, in going down to a 3-0 defeat, they showed that, if their ambitions for promotion to the Premier Elite are realised, they will not be out of their depth.

The game hinged on goals scored at the start of each half. In only the fourth minute, Epsom got the ball into the box and scored with too much ease at close range. That was the only goal of the half but, just two minutes into the second period, the home side punished Brockham for some slack marking and poor tackling with a sweeping move that was finished clinically at the near post.

Eight minutes later, the game was effectively over when Badgers failed to clear a corner, and a shot from the edge of the box was deflected wide of keeper Matt Batts.

Three attacks, three goals and in truth Epsom hardly created another chance. Brockham started slowly, taking time to adapt to a team who were physically stronger than they normally meet, and they didn’t create a chance of their own until the twentieth minute, but thereafter they must have carved out a dozen scoring opportunities. Harvey Mewis went close twice, Bertie Edwards-Hedges made a searing run down the left flank but couldn’t beat the keeper, a Matt Higgins free kick came back off the bar, and an Alex Nicholson header from a corner went just wide.

As so often, Brockham showed greater passing and movement and had a lion’s share of possession. Oli Winter and Mewis created plenty of space in the midfield, George Coffey and William Bletso held the ball up well at the front, and the back four of Will Mahoney, Higgins, Nicholson and Ross Bangs were strong throughout - Mahoney earning the Man of the Match for a superb display of well-timed tackling and good distribution down the right, linking well with the ever-threatening Josh Brown.

The most pleasing aspect of Brockham’s performance was that they kept playing football to the final whistle, probing for a goal and never letting their tempo - or morale – drop, but they need to find a cure for their indecision around goal and their tendency to take one touch too many in the build up.

Team: Matthew Batts, Will Mahoney, Matt Higgins, Alex Nicholson, Ross Bangs, Angus Hodge, Josh Brown, Harvey Mewis, Liam Ratcliffe, Oli Winter, Bertie Edwards-Hedges, George Coffey, William Bletso, Dan Hetzel.

Forest Row Junior 1 - 4 U12B

A game of five goals and all scored by Brockham!

A very good performance by the Badgers ensured a much needed win against very strong opposition, which will hopefully keep them in contention for winning the league this year.

As soon as the whistle went the lads were on the attack with good passing and movement all around which was then mirrored by Forest Row. After a very even first five minutes, Brockham, kicking uphill and into the sun, began to assert themselves. A lovely through ball by Tom Moriarty was latched onto by Ollie Kong who coolly slotted past the keeper to make it 0-1.

Then came the first scare of the match as Forest Row hit the side netting from the restart. Gradually Brockham gained the upper hand and a corner kick was cleared to our right back, Tom Barnes, who caught the ball sweetly from just outside the area and it managed to miss everyone and end up in the back of the Forest Row net for his first ever League goal. A good strike in a good performance.

The second half started with Badgers once again having the upper hand until a very good Forest Row free kick ended up in the back of our net via Ed Newman's head - also his first League goal for Brockham Badgers, but unfortunately at the wrong end!

The two goal margin was restored a few minutes later when Harry Kensett netted from a good corner by Andrew Watson.

Although losing and nearing the end of the game, Forest Row were keeping up the pressure, but some very good defending by the back four, helped on by a good tracking back in midfield held them at bay until Ollie Kong got his second of the day to make it 1-4 and effectively finish the match.

Well done lads, a very entertaining game and a good performance all round. Any of number of players could have had Player of the Day, from goalkeeper to striker, but in the end it went to Luka Kilner, always in the right place at the right time.

U11A 4 - 1 AFC Wimbledon
by Paul Walton

Epsom & Ewell League

Brockham Badgers U11A gave their supporters a feeling to match the bright and sunny conditions as Jordan Martin’s hatrick provided the foundation for a 4-1 win over AFC Wimbledon.

Wimbledon played neat passing football but could not match Brockham’s pace and flair down the wings.  William Pereira on the left and Luke Brightman and Martin on the right set Wimbledon a range of problems they failed to solve.  Lewis Wood and Ashley Marshall worked hard in the middle with Marshall providing some excellent distribution.

After only two minutes the pattern was set.  Pereira broke down the right and crossed to Brightman.  The ball was worked to Martin who laid it back to Marshall on the edge of the area whose shot was too good for the Wimbledon keeper.

Brockham maintained the play in the Wimbledon half and generated a series of good chances.  Finally George Gomes played the ball through to Marshall whose pass was timed perfectly to allow Martin to chip the keeper for the second goal.

Only minutes later Marshall freed Brightman down the right.  His hard shot was cleared straight into Martin and the ball rebounded into the Wimbledon net.  James Rabbetts made a sharp save from a rare Wimbledon foray into the Brockham half.

The pattern continued into the second half.  Again Martin was too quick through the middle and slipped the ball into the bottom left hand corner.

But Brockham couldn’t sustain the pace and started to tire.  Wimbledon scored when they reacted quickest to a rebound.  Only a dramatic tackle in the penalty area and a goal line clearance by Player of the Week Chris Walton maintained the score, but Wimbledon never looked like making up the deficit.

Captain's Comment:
"We started off with three good goals in the first half. One from Ashley Marshall , and two from Jordan Martin. After half time Jordan scored again , but then the other team scored . In the end the score was 4-1. Chris Walton got man of the match - but we all played well."

North Holmwood 1 - 6 U11B
by Peter Butterworth

Horsham and District League

A sunny and beautifully colourful Autumn morning warmed the U10Bs in preparation for their first game since a three goal defeat by Storrington Vipers knocked them out of the cup. Squadrons of geese were purposefully flying South for the winter: would the Badgers match them for grace, organisation and purpose?

A Half Term rest seemed to have allowed the advice of coach ‘Big-Jason’ to sink in. Positioning, passing and movement off the ball paid dividends as they made a confident and entertaining start. The well-organised defence held firm against early attacks by North Holmwood. Cameron Wallis who has been overworked yet brilliant in goal this season, must have thought his Half Term holiday had been extended to a fortnight.

Oliver Teague started brightly, dribbling and passing the ball to create chances along both wings. Nathan Hughes opened the scoring after seven minutes with a high looping shot over the keeper and just under the bar.

North Holmwood’s determined response was held up by the Badgers' midfield and defence for much of the first half and their efforts were rewarded with a second goal, this time by George Fenwick who was in the right place to take full advantage of a goalmouth scramble just before the break.

In the second minute of the new half, Oli Teague launched himself down the right carving his way through the opposition before crossing to Steven Holmes, who controlled well and calmly drove the ball past the keeper. A minute later Nathan Hughes scored a well-deserved second, taking a cross from Man of the Match Charlie Dunleavy and converting it well.

For many teams two goals in the first three minutes of the second half would be a killer blow, but North Holmwood did not give up. They were awarded a penalty after a foul in the box and made full use of it, despite a full length dive by the Brockham keeper.

This was followed by a sustained twenty minutes of Brockham pressure which was eventually rewarded with two late goals. Tom Hampshire crossed from the left and Oli Teague took it well on the right of the box to blast home a well deserved goal. Minutes later Steven Holmes cashed in on a rare Holmwood keeping error for his second of the match.

Winston Churchill: “It is no use saying ‘We are doing our best’. You have to do what is necessary”.

Man of the Match: Charlie Dunleavy.

U9 Blue 6 - 2 Hearts FC Lions
by Tony Watson

Tadworth League

This was the first meeting of the two sides and it proved to be a lively affair. Badgers launched into action with a Warne volley that almost found its target minutes after the kick off.

Brockham showed collective promise from the outset, finding each other with some impressive accuracy. We had waves of pressure, however the advantage was sometimes wasted by a curious lack of control with the finishing touches. On eight minutes, Hearts fought their way out of defence and caught the home side back peddling, the attack floundered with a timely interception by Warne.  A minute later and Morland’s inswinging corner caught everyone by surprise as it found it’s way into the net to open the scoring for Brockham.

Celebrations had barely begun when, a minute later, a series of well crafted one-touch Hearts moves through Brockham’s midfield restored parity.  Game on.

On 14 minutes, Morland received the ball near the centre of the park and set off dribbling and hoodwinking opponents. He finally completed a fine individual effort by nonchalantly rounding the goalkeeper to make it 2-1 to Brockham.

The lead was increased with five minutes of the first half left. Turner showed wonderful poise and control in front of goal to present Teague with an opportunity to tap in his side’s third.

There was plenty of incident to see the half out and Brockham were now in charge of proceedings: Purcell and Turner were busy winning battles in front of the midfield, Morland and Watson were plucking out surprising shots from their repertoire, Warne and Tillick were solidly holding the rear guard and Teague was finding his way into good scoring positions. In goal, Bennett was comfortably handling most of the threats that came his way.

Hearts kicked off the second half and went close within the first minutes: Bennett saving well on the ground from the feet of several Lions attackers. Hearts were at it again four minutes later when they burst out of defence at speed and with three on one, Bennett was given little chance in goal.

At 3-2 and Hearts in the ascendancy, it seemed that a level game was now on the cards but, two minutes later, Teague rose uncontested to meet a cross and control the ball in the six yard box, before touching it into the net.

A good natured but committed game was played by both sides, where the emphasis was on attack.  Numerous goal scoring opportunities were thrown up and, with more clinical finishing, the goal tally would have been higher. The play gradually opened right up, with little interruption or holding, and the home side was now using the full width and length of the field to find a way through a resolute Hearts team.

With pressure building up something had to give. A Morland cross was met by a Hearts defender in his own penalty area, and his attempted clearance was sliced into his own net to make the score 5-2 to Badgers.

The entertaining interplay continued and produced yet another goal. A Hearts clearance found its way to Morland at the edge of the area. With the keeper unsighted, Morland picked his line of fire through defenders to blast his third for a final score of 6-2.

Man of the Match: George Warne

Team: James Bennett, Daniel Killick, George Warne, Joe Teague, Oliver Turner, Zak Morland, Rufus Watson, Jacob Purcell.

Holmbury Stripes 0 - 4 U9 Red
by Belgin Dogansoy

Tadworth League

Brockham Badgers U9 Reds had an impressive game against rivals Holmbury Stripes. The game kicked off to an unbelievable start when a sleeping Holmbury keeper gave Brockham’s Matthew Ford the opportunity to get the opener with a roaring effort from half way.

Not long after, the game saw Brockham pressing the Holmbury defence once again, this time with the new boy Fletcher at the helm. Fletcher saw the chance to create a second for Brockham but was denied by a more alert Holmbury defence to give the Badgers their first corner of the game. Kemal Dogansoy stepped up to take the corner knowing that anything is possible at this early stage. The corner, which was hit with some menace, managed to pierce its way through the defence to find Chris Collis at the far post, who tapped in for 2-0.

Holmbury kept battling to find some sort of consolation for the first half but their efforts where easily shut down by the back two, Jamie Donegan and Edward Denham, showing promise for the Badgers.

Dogansoy’s delightful touch on the chest brought the ball down for his explosive run through the last third of the pitch. Without being selfish he threaded a brilliant pass through to Donegan who struck the ball with a fiery temper, but only for his effort to go wide of the mark. The first half was nearly over, much to the delight of the Holmbury team, but not before Dogansoy, who was showing promise all half, slotted home Badgers’ third.

After the huge drama of the first half, the game was played at a slower pace after the interval. It was left to the last minutes for Brockham to get their fourth of the day - which was one of the more unusual goals scored in football. After a strong crunching tackle with a Holmbury defender, Dogansoy found himself staring at the ground; a quick swing of the leg hit the ball towards the goal line where Denham and the Holmbury keeper were waiting. An attempt to stop the ball only saw it roll over the foot of Denham and crawl into the net. Both Brockham players claimed the goal – but we can safely say a goal is a goal.

The day saw a convincing win of 4-0 from the strong Brockham team, with the Badgers’ keeper, Jacob Vaughan, untroubled.

Team: Jacob Vaughan, Leo Ruff, Matthew Ford, Jamie Donegan, Kemal Dogansoy, Edward Denham, Christopher Collis, Matthew Appleton and Fletcher).

Man of the Match: For his outstanding vision on the ball and an all-round team performer, Kemal Dogansoy.
