U15B 11 - 0 Kirdford
by Simon Goddard |
|
Before this tie, the U15Bs had never won through a round of the Cup proper in their history! That record was well and truly consigned to the past with this 11 goal defeat of plucky Kirdford.
The similarities with this match and England vs. Estonia were uncanny at least for the first half. Like England, Badgers were three up at half time. Like England, Brockham benefited from an unfortunate own goal. And like England, Badgers had reached this point with a competent but not completely dominant display.
That's where any similarities between Badgers and England ceased. Whereas England were turgid, dull and uninspiring in the second half, Badgers were vibrant - capitalising on the strong position they had created, playing flowing and at times inspirational football to complete this 11-0 victory.
One would expect the plaudits in a game like this to go to the strikers, but this was a victory based on sound defence and an excellent midfield, with Goddard and Penny putting in superb performances. Goddard earned himself the man of the match award for his efforts. One other player who deserves special mention is Tom Paine, the Kirdford keeper. I counted six saves he made from point blank range and, for a newcomer to the position, he showed great promise.
Team: Hern, Sourris, Nazer, Bangs, Moorcroft, Parker, Knowles, Penny, Owen, Thomas, Goddard, Robins, Mackrell, Brightman.

U13A 9 - 0 Chesworth Rovers
by Bryan Bletso |
|
The U13As went through to the next round of the U13 League cup with a comfortable victory over Chesworth Rovers, two divisions below Badgers in the Horsham and District League. The game was played at Dorking FC's Meadowbank ground as part of their affiliation between us; Dorking FC generously making their pitch available after pressure on space in Brockham led to a lack of a pitch on the Big Field.
Brockham were never in danger of losing this one, even though they were unable to get off the mark in the opening fifteen minutes of the game. But with lad of the match Dylan Peters dominating the midfield with some excellent passing and interceptions, Badgers were always in control and the first goal duly arrived just after the quarter hour mark, when Stephen Kehl's shot was saved by the impressive, visiting keeper - only for another player who shone during the game, Henry Hill, to slot home from the rebound.
With the resistance broken, Brockham quickly ran in to a 4-0 half time lead. Hill grabbed his second of the game following a good Brockham move, Ben Stokoe then made it 3-0 after good work by Mitch Ward, and Peters justified his lad of the match award with a stunning left foot shot from outside the box for the fourth. The only downer for Brockham at this stage was an injury to striker Stokoe, which saw him unable to take any further part in the game.
Chesworth battled vailiantly, but were unable to mount much of a challenge on Henry Warne's goal, the keeper and his defenders having a quiet morning. Brockham scored five second half goals. Mitch Ward got the first two of those for 6-0, Kehl deservedly scored to make it seven, before Ward grabbed a hatrick for 8-0. In the closing stages, Kehl rounded off the scoring with a good effort to give Badgers their second win in a row.
Team: Henry Warne, Alex Postles, Tim Whybrow, Tom Bletso, Jack Hunt, Michael Carty, Dylan Peters, Bill Rowlands, Mitch Ward, Henry Hill, Stephen Kehl, Ben Stokoe |

Upper Beeding 5 - 4 U13 Black
by Bryan Bletso |
|
Upper Beeding secured an exciting victory over higher league opposition with a close win over the U13 Blacks. The two teams are old friends having played a series of friendlies and league games prior to Badgers’ promotion last season. This win for Upper Beeding saw them break Badgers’ four game winning streak between the two sides.
The Sussex club set out their stall early on with a goal from a corner in the opening two minutes. Brockham seemed to struggle to get going, Henry Smith hitting the post in a rare Badgers attack, before Upper Beeding extended their lead - their impressive number 9 getting the first of four goals in a match winning performance.
Brockham rather fortuitously were given a way back into the game when Smith coolly slotted home a penalty just before half time to make it 2-1 at the interval.
Badgers came out a different team in the second half and, for twenty minutes, bossed the game. First George Corfield made it 2-2 with a neat finish, then William Bletso powered a shot home from outside the box to suddenly give Brockham a 3-2 lead.
t was all Brockham now, and it seemed a question of how many Brockham would win by - but a host of chances went begging. Upper Beeding then scored with a rare second half attack, and once more the balance of power in the game swung to the home team. Their number 9 made it 4-3 with fifteen minutes to go. But Brockham are a resilient side, and, five minutes later, Oliver Curtis made it 4-4 after a great Corfield cross. Once more, it looked like Badgers were in the ascendancy, but an injury to keeper Connor Mitchell seemed to disrupt the Brockham flow and Upper Beeding scored a great individual goal to secure the victory.
There was still time for Toby Dowle to hit the bar for Badgers, and for Smith to go agonisingly close, but the home side held out to claim an exciting cup win.
Team: Connor Mitchell, Tom Kinsey, Sam Norkett, David Atkinson, Max Ruff, George Corfield, Alex Ward, Toby Dowle, Henry Smith, Ollie Curtis, Robbie Ventham, William Bletso

Broadbridge Heath 5 - 0 U12B
by Trevor Reaveley |
|
A convincing win by Broadbridge Heath knocked a below strength and below par Badgers team out of the Horsham and District League Cup.
We started the match with a few boys playing out of position and with Andrew Watson taking the place of our main goalscorer, Ollie Kong. Within two minutes, Broadbridge had taken the lead when the Badgers failed to clear the ball from their own six yard area. This indecision would continue throughout the game and, by half time, we were three down. We did manage to hold our own for periods of the game but the movement and strength of a team two divisions above us slowly but surely came to the fore.
The game was really over by the time the second half started, the lads heads had dropped and there was no willingness to run. But in all fairness we were playing the second half with a few walking wounded. A fourth goal half way through the second half, quickly followed by an unfortunate bobble which Michael Ellis couldn't hold, ended the game for us.
Some very indecisive passing and lack of movement were really our downfall. Defenders weren't clearing, the midfield were giving the ball away too often and the whole team generally played too deep and in awe of the reputation of the higher placed team - and so it wasn't to be our day.
The Player of the Week was our goalkeeper, Michael Ellis. Despite five getting past him, he looked sharp and, without him, many more would have ended up in the back of our net.

The U11As started slowly, but gradually pushed forward to test Bookham’s goalie who had to make several good saves to keep the scores level.
After fifteen minutes, both teams were testing each other's defence and a good period of Brackham play resulted in a little chip from Luke Brightman over the Bookham keeper's head - and the Badgers had the lead.
Another period of excellent passing play allowed James Rabbetts to score. Sam Lloyd followed suit to make it 3-0 to Brockham. It might have been more at the interval when Jordan Martin made a brilliant run and forced another excellent save from Bookham’s goalie.
After the break, both teams fought hard for the ball but Bookham enjoyed their best spell of the game. It culminated in an accidental hand ball in the Badgers' box and, from the penalty, Bookham clawed their way back into the match. An excellently taken corner allowed the visotrs to score their second shortly after.
At 3-2, the Badgers might have been clinging on, but they settled down and started to pass the ball around once more. Jordan Martin eased the Brockham nerves by making it 4-2 and then Ashley Marshall lofted a ball into the Bookham net for a fifth.
Some hard tackling from Luke Brightman, Thomas Charman and Ali Masson, combined with good passing, led to a sixth goal from Sam Lloyd.
Bookham fought back but a final period of excellent play from Brockham saw George Gomez to set up Jordan Martin up for the Badgers' well-deserved seventh and final goal.
Players of the week: Ashley Marshall, Ali Masson.
Team: George Gomez, Alastair Masson, Thomas Charman, Cameron Boychuk, Ashley Marshall, Lewis Wood, Jordan Martin, Sam Lloyd, James Rabbetts, Luke Brightman, Jamie Luckins, Luc Jhugroo, William Pereira. |

U9 Blue 11 - 1 Chilworth Rangers
by Tony Watson |
|
The U9 Blues got their season underway in emphatic style on Saturday, securing a good win in their first Tadworth League game in the Big Field.
From the kick off, the Badgers immediately went on the offensive, taking the lead in the opening minute through Tiley. Brockham impressed with well orchestrated, accurate team play. Purcell attacked with zest down the right flank and Turner found time to weave his way through the opposition defence. Both players came desperately close to extending the lead. In the 3rd minute Purcell turned brilliantly in the area only to see his effort hit the woodwork. However, a minute later Teague stepped into the fold to make it 2-0 with a confidently executed strike.
The home side were combining well, with attractive touch and run football, that again almost brought the alert Turner close to scoring with a shot that rebounded off the post. On ten minutes, another Turner shot was saved by the keeper but Tiley, following in, made no mistake for his second and Brockham’s third.
The fast, fluid Badgers continued to dominate in a good tempered game.
The fourth goal came four minutes later; Morland’s shot was driven back only as far as Purcell who, with stunning effect, danced his way through the back line and drove the ball into the net.
It took all of two minutes for Morland to pick a loose ball up on the edge of the area to make the score 5-0, with another goal taken with an assured maturity. Within minutes Morland again struck a long range shot that was deflected past the replacement Chilworth goalie for Brockham's sixth. Not content with the half dozen, Badgers pressed for more and Purcell stretched and rose above all to meet a cross to nod in in the last minute of the half for an interval lead of 7-0.
After the break,
Chilworth kicked off - a little bruised but still playing with heart. The tempo of the game slowed slightly and the visitors began to make themselves felt more. However it was a false dawn as Watson picked up the ball on the left flank, side stepped the keeper and coolly slotted in number eight.
Morland the secured his hat trick with a display of single-minded determination as he waltzed his way through midfield, unthwarted, to rifle the ball past a helpless goalkeeper.
Within a minute a tenth goal was added to the tally by a Morland/Tiley combination, after uncertainty in the away side’s penalty area.
At 10-0 Brockham’s untroubled defence stepped down a gear and were caught napping by Chilworth’s refusal to give up. Chilworth regained their shape enough to fire home a consolation goal with six minutes left on the clock. But Morland added a sting in the final minute of the game, to finish the scoring off at 11-1.
A fantastic win to start the seaosn for Brockham - and the score could have been more had it not been for gallant midfield efforts and fine saves by the Chilworth keeper in the dying moments of the game.
Team: James Bennett, Daniel Killick, Joe Teague, Zak Morland, Wilbur Tiley,Oliver Turner, Rufus Watson, George Warne, Jacob Purcell |
