On a beautiful autumnal morning Brockham Badgers travelled to Ewhurst full of confidence after two impressive victories. The pre match team talk was serious however - this Ewhurst outfit was much improved on last season and they too had two wins under their belt.

Badgers began playing silky flowing football with intricate interpassing and Moorcroft in particular terrorised the Ewhurst defence. After yet another foray up field from Moorcroft the Ewhurst keeper failed to deal with his cross and Robins was in the right place to capitalise on the mistake and tap in after fifteen minutes.

Midway through the first half with Brockham in apparent control a triple substitution seemed to affect the cohesion of the team and at times they looked vulnerable. Thomas however was playing a blinder; he was rock solid in defence and Badgers were able to go in at half time 1-0 up.

Further substitutions at the break had an altogether different effect and after a pile driver from Thomas, a classic strike from Knowles and a predator’s finish from Brightman, Badgers were suddenly 4-0 up.  Brightman had played the Heskey holding role for Knowles’s goal and Parker did brilliantly creating Brightman’s chance.

What would happen next - a rout perhaps? No, this match had more twists than a curly whirly and, following another triple substitution, Badgers suddenly found themselves up against a resurgent Ewhurst. Two long range shots soon made it 4-2. What this Badgers team has by the lorry load however is team spirit and, despite the set back, the team pulled together with Mansfield and Thomas showing the way with their determined play.

Up front Parker was provider once more when his searing shot was pushed on to the bar for that man Robins to be in the right place again to settle the nerves....5-2. The last word was to go to last week's man of the match Mackrell, who capitalised on a defensive error to score a simple goal and conclude this topsy turvy fixture.

Man of the match: Moorcroft

Team: Goddard, Thomas, Moorcroft, Sourris, Nazer, Parker, Owen, Hern, Knowles, Robins, Mackrell, Bangs, Mansfield, Brightman.

Brockham Badgers U13A produced a top class performance to beat last year's 'A' league champions Ashurst Wood with a gritty display that claimed an overdue victory.

In the last two matches, Brockham had walked away with draws when perhaps all three points should have been claimed. This week Badgers upped their performance levels by several notches to deservedly send Ashurst Wood home empty handed. To put a marker on how good this win was, Ashurst had beaten Ockley Acorns 8-1 and Dorkinians Youth 9-1 in their previous two gams

Brockham shaded the first half and took the lead when central midfield pair Dylan Peters and Bill Rowlands combined. Rowlands latched on to Peters' pass around the centre circle, then beat a defender and surged into the box where he did really well to keep his nerve when one-ion-one with the keeper. The cool finish made it 1-0 midway through the first half.

Ashurst Wood came back strongly in the second half, but once more keeper Henry Warne was rock solid in goal, while the defensive unit of Henry Hill, Tim Whybrow, Matthew Gill, Jack Hunt, Michael Carty and Tom Bletso did their bit to stem the tide of Ashurst attacks.

As the game progressed, gradually Brockham were able to carve out chances on the break, several chances falling to Mitch Ward in the last quarter of an hour as Ashurst pressed for an equaliser.  The last ten minutes saw Brockham stand firm, lad of the match Tom Bletso leading by example in the heart of the defence.

The victory gives the U13A side a real platform on which to build and manager Ian Kehl will be looking for the side to produce performances of this stature week in week out as the season progresses

Team: Henry Warne, Tim Whybrow, Henry Hill, Joe Parker, Matthew Gill, Jack Hunt, Michael Carty, Thomas Bletso, Bill Rowlands, Dylan Peters, Stephen Kehl, Ben Stokoe, Ryan Winter, Mitchell Ward.

Chesworth Rovers 3 - 3 U13 Black

The U13 Blacks produced their best display of the season at league leaders Chesworth Rovers, with a fine fightback from 3-0 down, to claim a draw and almost snatch a dramatic win.

The side had gone into the game in search of a morale boosting performce following a narrow defeat, but had their work cut out against a Chesworth side who had started the season with four straight wins and a massive goal difference of +17.

Badgers started the game strongly and, for the first twenty minutes gave as good as they got. Once more keeper Connor Mitchell produced a commanding performance in goal, while the back four of Robbie Ventham, David Atkinson, Sam Norkett and George Corfield looked strong.

Badgers were winning the cenrral midfield battle with Toby Dowle and Alex Marshall working really hard to close their oppoinents down, but Chesworth were playing with a confidence borne of a strong start to the season, and duly took the lead when Mitchell saved well only to see the ball rammed home from close range.  Chesworth then scored a second on the stroke of half time for a flattering 2-0 lead at the break.

Chesworth came out strongly in the second half and made it 3-0 soon after the restart and Mitchell made a great couple of saves to deny the home side the chance to make the game safe. But Badgers were still creating chances and, when Ollie Legg latched on to a finely weighted ball from midfield to pull a goal back, suddenly the game changed.

Badgers were in complete control in the last twenty minutes. Henry Smith duly made it 3-2 with a good run and finish before, with ten minutes to go, Legg struck a beauty of  a shot from outside the area for the equaliser.

Brockham now looked likely to win the game, but just ran out of time as the home side clung on to claim a draw.  Chesworth will be a strong contender for promotion this season, if not to win the league title, but Badgers will be looking to push on from this fine comeback and climb the league.

Team: Connor Mitchell, George Corfileld, David Atkinson, Sam Norkett, Robbie Ventham, Alex Marshall, Toby Dowle, Ollie Legg, Henry Smith, Ollie Curtis, Alex Ward, George Heymann

In a tight match, Kirdford scored twice in the first twenty minutes. But Badgers hit back with a great goal from the edge of the penalty area from Otto and an equaliser from Josh C.

In the second half, Kirdford again took an early lead, but Badgers equalised once more after Dan H got on the end of a massive kick out from keeper Josh H.

The last fifteen minutes were extremely tense with both sides coming close to scoring the winner but it was Badgers finally won through with a well taken second goal for Dan.

The defence looked very strong for most of the match, but man of the match went to new signing Luke Prior for an excellent display at right half.

Team: Josh Hook, Jamie Davidson, James Stone, Ollie Smith, Daniel Ryan, Luke Prior, Stefan Issberner, Dougie Baldwin, Otto Young, Josh Caldwell, Dan Hoad

U12A 3 - 0 Beecholme Colts
by Simon Winter
Surrey Youth League

Brockham Badgers U12A stay top of the Surrey Youth Premier League North after a 3-0 home win over Beecholme Colts that should have been even more emphatic.

Brockham took the lead mid-way through the first half when Harvey Mewis drilled in a hard, low shot from 18 yards that the Beecholme keeper failed to hold. Either side of this, Badgers created a number of chances but blasted either high, wide or into a grateful goalie’s arms. Will Bletso and Ben Knight-Sawyers were a constant threat up front, receiving good supply either from the wings, where Josh Brown and Bertie Edwards-Hedges were both at their marauding best, or from midfield where Mewis and Oli Winter won the majority of possession and used the ball intelligently.

But half time came and went, and Brockham needed a full thirty minutes after scoring their first goal to add a second. This one was created by Alex Nicholson, who made a barnstorming run out of defence with the ball, carrying it deep into opposition territory before chipping it forward to Edwards-Hedges, who rounded the keeper and scored with real composure. Another good build-up down the left two minutes later saw George Coffey fire into the opposite corner for a great finish, and a 3-0 lead that Beecholme rarely threatened.

Matthew Batts in the Brockham goal would have been forgiven for placing an armchair in his goalmouth, so rarely was he called upon, although he did have to make one very good save late on, and had been relieved to see Matt Higgins make a superb covering clearance off his line in the first half. Josh Brown was named Man of the Match for a very lively performance in which he totally dominated the right flank and set up numerous chances.

Ultimately this was a good win against a team containing a number of decent individual players and a well-organised midfield, but Badgers will not always get away with being so wasteful in front of goal and need to reap more reward from their invariably good build-up play.

Team: Matthew Batts, Will Mahoney, Matt Higgins, Alex Nicholson, Ross Bangs, Angus Hodge, Josh Brown, Harvey Mewis, Liam Ratcliffe, Oli Winter, Bertie Edwards-Hedges, George Coffey, Ben Knight-Sawyers, William Bletso, Dan Hetzel.

U12B 8 - 1 East Grinstead Town

Without going into too much detail (there's not the time or space) it was a very convincing win for the Badgers with a much more disciplined performance than of late.

Ollie Kong started the proceedings and went on to get another two, there were doubles for both Tom Moriarty and Tim Hines with Luka Kilner scoring the odd one, but not necessarily in that order. There was too much going on to take any real note of the sequence of events!

It was a very strong performance from all members of the team, from good defending through to a creative midfield and onto the clinical finishing. Everyone worked for each other and the passing game was much improved. Some very good and unselfish play through the centre of the field, combined with accurate lay offs, made it very difficult for East Grinstead to defend.

If there has to be a complaint about the Badgers' performance it would be that they played very narrow at times, and a bit more width would have worked the opposition harder. This, combined with losing possession from throw ins (especially foul throws - c'mon lads, ball behind your head, both feet on the ground!), probably kept us below double figures.

All credit to East Grinstead, they were a man short and even when a few goals down they didn't hang their heads and kept on playing until the very end. Stiffer opposition than this wouldn't give us as much space, but even so it was a good workout for accurate passing.

Any number of players could have had the Man of the Match award. The goalscorers who all put in the work, Alex Dean who did a lot of hard work in breaking up the East Grinstead attacks, DJ Hall for some good crosses. But in the end, for some superb last man challenges and always being in the right place at the right time, the man of the Match was Ed Newman.

U11A 21 - 0 Netherne Falcons B

Epsom & Ewell League Cup R1

Cup competitions can easily throw up a mismatch, and Netherne Falcons U11B were unlucky to meet a Brockham Badgers team on top of their game in the League Cup.  Brockham scored 21 unanswered goals against a demoralised Netherne defence.

Brockham delivered a stream of devastating diagonal balls from midfield through to strikers breaking at pace.  All over the pitch they showed excellent commitment with Ashley Marshall and Lewis Wood winning all the battles in central midfield and keeping play in the Netherne half.

Netherne didn’t manage a shot on target.  At the other end Jordan Martin scored six and Alex Flint five.  Cameron Boychuk, Luke Brightman and Lewis Wood claimed a hat trick each, with Sam Lloyd picking up the remaining goal.

Several of the goals showed outstanding Brockham qualities.  Chris Walton played a quick pass to Flint just inside the Brockham half.  Flint freed Martin who scampered past the left back and chipped the ball over the keeper.  Tom Charman stormed down the left wing and crossed for Lloyd to head in.  Lewis Wood battled hard in the Netherne penalty area and managed to poke the ball home. Luc Jhugroo picked up the ball in the middle of the Brockham half.  He passed to Charman who freed Brightman on the left wing.  Brightman beat two defenders and scored with a low shot.

This match turned into an excellent attacking training session for Brockham.  But they will have a sterner test next week back in the league.

Players of the week: Tom Charman, Jordan Martin.

Team: Jamie Luckins, Ashley Marshall, Chris Walton, Luc Jhugroo, Tom Charman, Luke Brightman, James Rabbetts, Lewis Wood, Jordan Martin, Sam Lloyd, Cameron Boychuk, Alex Flint

U8A 5 - 1 Hearts FC Lions

The U8As were put through their warm-up routine by coach Nick Torpey in preparation for their first match of the season against Hearts FC ‘Lions’.

After last season’s bright start from this group, there was much expectation…  They did not disappoint!

Playing a 2-3-1 formation, these young players soon got into their stride. Some firm defending early in the game by Callum Glenn, ably supported by Oliver Kail saw off early attacks from the Lions.  The Badgers then counter-attacked with some great skills from Joseph Issberner and Chloe Stimpson, linking up well with the lone striker. After a flurry of shots, Justin Hurst finally planted the ball in the back of the net - 1-0.

The Badgers' pressure continued and it wasn’t long before Max Austin scored another.  Callum Glenn brought the ball up the field from deep defence and again, after several attempts, he placed the ball across the goal, just squeezing inside the far post.  An over vigorous tackle resulted in a penalty for the Lions, which was beautifully taken, with a shot low into the left hand corner.  Just on the half time whistle Justin Hurst showed quick feet before planting his second into the Lions' net.

Aidan Torpey came out of goal for the second half and quickly slipped the ball neatly into the opponents bottom right hand corner.  Three players rotated for the second half.  Harry Fairley and Paddy Doyle provided solid defence, with Jed  Simister pushing forward hard, linking up well with the front.  The game finished 5 – 1 to Brockham Badgers and the team eagerly await their next fixture in two weeks' time.

Team (see photo above): Max Austin, Paddy Doyle, Harry Fairley, Callum Glenn, Justin Hurst, Joseph Issberner, Oliver Kail, Jed Simister, Chloe Stimpson, Aidan Torpey
