AFC Redlands 0 - 14 U18 (Brockham Green 3rd)
by Roger Bayliss |
|
Brockham Badgers U17s of last year stepped up into Leatherhead and District Mens League in glorious style. With just eleven players available for selection then two unavailable, Brockham entered their first senior game with just nine players!!!!
With a compromised team shape but clear game plan from the start, Brockham tore the home team apart at every opportunity. If not for some early missed opportunities the score could have been greater. Whilst Brockham had a slope advantage, relentless running and superb team play and tactics never allowed the home team into the game. By half-time the score was 0-6.
In the second half Brockham knew they would be more challenged. The objective now was to keep a clean sheet. Against the slope and with most team members exhausted, a changed game plan allowed Brockham to exploit the home team further. Changing from playing 'long' to keep 'ball' inspired further attacks on the home goal. Pushing forward with superb possession play, Brockham amazingly ran in a further eight goals with the home team totally over-run. By the end all Brockham players were shattered - cramp and strains set in, yet nobody had stopped competing or running for the full 90 minutes.
And yes, all this with nine players. It bodes well for the return of all squad members.
Scorers: Frederick Case (5), Darrell Mothee (3), Thomas Bayliss (3), Thomas Hinchliffe (1), Edward Collins (1), Luke Rowe (1).
Team: Parker, Bayliss T, Hinchliffe, Bayliss R, Harvey, Case, Collins, Mothee, Rowe.

Cranleigh Tigers 2 - 2 U13A
by Bryan Bletso |
|
Brockham Badgers U13A were down to the bare bones for their visit to Cranleigh on Saturday as injury and unavailability saw led to just eleven players in the squad. That included the brave Bill Rowlands, who turned up for the side despite carrying a knock and performed well in the anchor midfield position.
Brockham are traditionally slow starters, and yet again they made life difficult for themselves by conceding a goal in the opening minute - captain and keeper Henry Warne was given no chance as Cranliegh swept into the lead almost from the kick off.
This put Badgers on the back foot and, for fifteen minutes, it was only really Warne that stood between Cranleigh and an increase in their lead. Gradually however Badgers steadied the ship and dug in. That determination paid dividends with an equaliser just moments before half time, albeit against the run of play. Tom Bletso put in a strong tackle to break up a Cranleigh attack, passing the ball to Bill Rowlands who found Henry Hill. Hill did really well to chip the keeper.
Lifted by the goal, Brockham came out buzzing in the second half and were on top for a good twenty minutes, deservedly taking the lead when Hill fed Steven Kehl who finished well. Badgers could have killed the game off, with Kehl hitting the bar, but the crucial third goal would not come and it was Cranleight who found the net, equalising with just seven minutes to go. The game then swung Cranleigh's way, and it took a goal line clearance from Michael Carty to ensure that the game finished all square.
Team : Henry Warne, Alex Postles, Michael Carty, Thomas Bletso, Joe Parker, Bill Rowlands, Dylan Peters, Ryan Winter, Henry Hill, Stephen Kehl, Ben Stokoe

Albury Eagles 6 - 0 U13Bk
by Bryan Bletso |
|
The U13 Blacks fell to their first league defeat in fifteen games as Albury ran out comfortable winners. After promotion to a higher division, Brockham will put this game down to experience and look to learn from the defeat.
An even opening saw Albury score the crucial opener on fifteen minutes as Brockham failed to pick up a man from a corner, and a lobbed second on twenty minutes seemed to slightly flatter the home side as Brockham were giving as good as they got in the opening stages. Indeed, Badgers could have got straight back in the game but the Albury keeper was having an outstanding game and smothered the chance as Brockham looked odds on to reduce the arrears.
A crucial injury to captain Connor Mitchell just after the second goal seemed to sum up Badgers luck and, unusually for this team, heads went down as Albury made it 3-0 just before half time
Given the run of unbeaten games, this was a new situation for Brockham to try to deal with and, to be fair, the boys gave it a real go in the second half. Ollie Legg and Henry Smith were prominent and, with Sam Norkett, held the defence together but, despite possession, it was Albury who grabbed the crucial next goal to secure the result.
A good fifth goal soon followed for the home team, but Brockham showed they had plenty of fitness and character left by taking the game to the opponents for the last twenty minutes. But, despite a series of chances, luck was not on the side of Badgers, and the morning was summed up as Albury scored from a good header with the last action of the game.

Cannons FC 1 - 7 U12A
by Simon Winter |
|
The small size of the pitch was a worry to the U12As on their arrival at the Cannons FC ground, accustomed as they are to maximising the width of their home turf. They needn’t have worried, however, as they enjoyed one of the most emphatic victories of their 11-a-side history.
George Coffey opened the scoring with a neat turn and shot in the sixth minute, after almost one-way traffic, and although Cannons quickly restored parity with a penalty, it only took another two minutes for Josh Brown to make it 2-1 as the home defence went to sleep. Badgers continued to dominate, allowing Cannons only the occasional breakaway - efficiently snuffed out by the Brockham defence – and, just before half time, Harvey Mewis found the net for a 3-1 lead, with a well-directed free kick from just outside the box.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Brockham scoring twice more within the first eight minutes. First, William Bletso played a deft lob over the keeper from close range and then a goal that epitomised Brockham’s performance. Cannons were threatening to break forward but the move was broken down on the halfway line by a typically strong and well-timed tackle by Will Mahoney, reversing the play and setting Brown on a run into the box. Coffey’s shot then hit a post, only for Mewis to knock in the rebound.
Two minutes from time Bertie Edwards-Hedges made a great run down the left and saw his cross-shot evade everyone and trickle over the line. Cannons’ heads were well and truly down now and Harvey Mewis was allowed the time and space to shoot from distance and surprise the keeper, earning a hatrick on only his second appearance, and with it the man of the match award.
After the usual handshakes, the beaten hosts showed remarkable sportsmanship by coming over to applaud Brockham for their outstanding display.
Team: Matthew Batts, Will Mahoney, Matt Higgins, Alex Nicholson, Ross
Bangs, Angus Hodge, Josh Brown, Harvey Mewis, Liam Ratcliffe, Oli Winter, Bertie Edwards-Hedges, George Coffey, Ben Knight-Sawyers, William Bletso, Dan Hetzel. |

U12B 5 - 2 Ashington Cougars
by Duncan Hanwell |
|
Another thriller of a match for the U12Bs, newly in the Horsham & District League, where the lads over-powered a strong Ashington team to run out 5-2 winners.
First half goals from Ollie Kong and Axel Davies gave the Badgers a comfortable cushion midway through the first half. But Ashington had other ideas and capitalised on a rare goalkeeping error to pull back a goal, before equalising a few minutes later.
Chances were missed on both sides with the Brockham defence being caught with long balls over the top on more than one occasion. However, Jamie Hanwell calmed the nerves with two individual goals cutting in from the left wing, and Ollie Kong completed the scoring, bringing his tally to five in two matches.
This win gives Brockham a 100% record, and puts us in a strong position. The lads will need to develop more discipline and structure if they want to maintain that record, as better finishing from the Cougars could have proved embarrassing.
Lads of the Match: Jamie Hanwell and Axel Davies. |

Bookham Colts 9 - 2 U11A
by Paul Walton |
|
In their first game in the Epsom & Ewell Premier Division, Brockham learned some hard lessons about the levels of commitment and organisation they will need.
Bookham started fast and dominated the midfield, competing aggressively and using space effectively. Without an outlet, the Brockham defence was pinned back and started to defend too deep, inviting more pressure.
The goals flowed. Hesitant defending let Bookham forwards score four soft goals. And Brockham’s unease with the offside law allowed Bookham to convert two long balls through the centre.
Slowly, messages from the Brockham manager, Jason Rabbetts, started to take effect. The Brockham defence held their line further up field and started to catch Bookham offside. Luke Brightman and Alistair Masson competed hard in midfield and started generating opportunities down the right for Jordan Martin.
In the second half Bookham were still playing well and profited again from some Brockham jitters to score another three. But Brockham earned some reward for their efforts. Martin competed hard for an Ashley Marshall free kick and Sam Lloyd took advantage to score. Lloyd also took advantage of a well-placed through ball to score Brockham’s second.
Brockham showed, in patches, that they were a match for Bookham. They can take great heart from a gutsy second half performance. It may take a few games for them to adjust to the pace and movement of the Premier Division, but on the evidence of this game, they will make it.
Player of the week: Alistair Masson.
Team: Jamie Luckins, George Gomez, Ashley Marshall (c), Chris Walton, Luc Jhugroo, Tom Charman, Luke Brightman, Alistair Masson, James Rabbetts, Lewis Wood, Jordan Martin, Sam Lloyd |

West Byfleet Scorpions B 1 - 1 U10A
by Graham Edwards |
|
The U10As, coached for the first time by U18 player Lewis Evans, had a great start to the season with an away fixture against West Byfleet Scorpions. The ground was hard and the weather scorching. It should have suited Scorpions better than Badgers but
we 'dug in' against some stinging attacks and countered with maturity and excellent 'shape'.
Ben's keeping was rock-steady and he stayed strong
throughout the 2153 goal kicks required from him. Andy was more than handy with some superb movement and a header glancing off the upright. There were plenty of 'counter-charges' throughout with Alfie requiring 'hosing-down' to avoid spontaneous combustion! Dom and Ben had a great game and provide a welcome injection of skill and strength to the team.
The first half was without score and the heat was on in the second to make an impression. 'True grit' was provided by Louis, and Harry was far from Dirty, providing some fresh legs and linking passes up front. Tommy 'felt lucky' and made a charge straight down the middle, threw a nifty draw around the keeper and popped it in. Gooooooooooooooooooooooooal!
The boys deserved several more and never looked ragged in either defence or attack. Well played Michael. The Scorpions poked one in during the last quarter and, with keeper Ben picking up an injury that left Alfie to guard our net, the final five minutes were nail-biting.
Lots of
guts, no blood and a final score of 1-1. A superb start to the season for a newly-formed team. |
