U13A 1 - 2 Three Bridges
by Bryan Bletso |
|
Brockham Badgers U13A fell to a close defeat in their first game of the season against a decent Three Bridges side - although the lads will feel that they probably could as easily have won this game as lost it, such was the closeness of the match.
The game was played at Meadowbank, Dorking FC's ground, and the club thanks Dorking FC for the favour of allowing the boys to play on the first team pitch, easing the home fixture pile-up on the Big Field..
Brockham keeper Henry Warne led the side, having been made captain for the season by manager Ian Kehl, while Tom Bletso made his debut for the A squad.
Three Bridges made the stronger start. Alex Postles had already cleared the ball off the line and Jack Hunt made a spectacular tackle in the six-yard box before a Three Bridges cross was headed in on the quarter-hour mark. Warne was given little chance.
But the goal sparked Badgers into action and they were soon level. Stephen Kehl passed to Ryan Winter, who beat two players before finishing well. Badgers were on top now, with Dylan Peters and Henry Hill seeing more of the ball in midfield, while Kehl and Ben Stokoe were looking dangerous in attack. Lad of the match Joe Parker showing good tactical awareness at right back despite playing out of position.
The second half saw Badgers continue to shade things. The introduction of Mitch Ward at half time added to the attacking threat, but the danger signs were there with Warne having to make a couple of smart saves mid way through the second period. And Three Bridges did take the lead with ten minutes to go, a good cut back seeing a visiting player in space to shoot past the keeper and make it 2-1, perhaps against the run of play.
Whereas in the first half Badgers had responded well when Three Bridges had scored, the response in the second half was more erratic. Passes went astray as tiredness set in, and the game finished with no more goals. Badgers will look back on this game as a missed opportunity, but the season will be played over twenty league games and if the U13As play like this there should be more wins than defeats
Team: Henry Warne, Alex Postles, Michael Carty, Jack Hunt, Joe Parker, Tom Bletso, Dylan Peters, Ryan Winter, Henry Hill, Stephen Kehl, Ben Stokoe, Mitch Ward.

U13Bk 3 - 3 Twin Oaks

The U13 Blacks entertained old friends Twin Oaks at Dorking FC's Meadowbank ground on Saturday for the first league match of the season. As with the A team, Dorking FC chairman Jack Collins and vice chair Ray Collins had kindly agreed to let Badgers play at the stadium when a fixture blip saw many Brockham sides scheduled to play at home on the Big Field.
Last season, Badgers had pipped Twin Oaks to the league title as both sides were promoted and the two games matches they played were fine games played in a fine sporting spirit. This game proved no different. Badgers went into the match with only the bare minimum of eleven players , but more than made up for their lack of numbers with a performance full of determination.
The draw now makes it fourteen league games since the Black team were last defeated, stretching back to October 2006 - and they are unbeaten at home in the league since January 2006. Last season, striker Ollie Curtis notched 39 goals, and it took him under five minutes of the new season to get off the mark, latching on to an Ollie Legg through ball to drive it home from the edge of the box.
Twin Oaks levelled midway through the first half, and then took the lead just before the interval when a ball was followed in after a great save from Badgers keeper Connor Mitchell, who commanded his area well with safe hands throughout the match
With no subs and an ankle injury to midfielder Alex Ward suffered in the first period, Badgers looked up against it on the big Dorking FC pitch, but with Toby Dowle playing a great anchor role in midfield and David Atkinson marshalling the defence with growing authority, Badgers came out strongly in the second period. Curtis soon grabbed his second of the game to make it 2-2 with half an hour to go - another great finish this time from just inside the box.
Both sides were giving as good as they got, but Badgers thought they had snatched a win six minutes from time when Curtis seized on a ball from Ward and hammered home. But Twin Oaks equalised three minutes later. Brockham's team spirit showed in the final minute when Sam Norkett, having had a faultless game at centre back, went down injured, but played on to ensure his side got the point they deserved.

U12A 4 - 0 Wandgas Youth
by Simon Winter |
|
Brockham Badgers U12As got off to a flyer in their introduction to the Surrey Youth League, beating Wandgas Youth with a comfortable but disciplined performance at the Big Field. Charging out of the blocks, Badgers made several raids on the visitors’ goal, Josh Brown getting some dangerous crosses into the box before they took the lead on seven minutes, Bertie Edwards-Hedges finishing from a tight angle.
The Brockham defence picked up quickly where it left off last season, when only eleven goals were conceded. Mahoney, Higgins, Nicholson and Hodge marshalled the play away from their own box and allowed keeper Matthew Batts an almost untroubled morning. Winter and Ratcliffe kept good possession in midfield and used the ball well, while Coffey and Knight-Sawyers up front took the game constantly to the opposition, leading to a second goal mid-way through the half courtesy of a close range effort from Ratcliffe.
Manager Simon Coffey felt able to shuffle his players around and try out a few options, with Ross Bangs showing his versatility in no less than three positions, Dan Hetzel coming in on the right wing, and new recruit Harvey Mewis slotting comfortably into the midfield on his debut. William Bletso came on up front and, twelve minutes from time, put the game out of reach. His lob-shot just evaded the grasp of the Wandgas keeper who, despite the scoreline, was their best player. Soon after, Liam Ratcliffe scored his second to make it 4-0 and earn himself the Man of the Match award.
So a great start to the season, although the boys know there will be tougher games ahead and they will need to raise their fitness levels after the summer break.
Team: Matthew Batts, Will Mahoney, Matt Higgins, Alex Nicholson, Ross
Bangs, Josh Brown, Harvey Mewis, Oli Winter, Bertie Edwards-Hedges, George
Coffey, Ben Knight-Sawyers, William Bletso, Angus Hodge, Liam Ratcliffe, Dan Hetzel. |

U11A 10 - 1 Tadworth
by Paul Walton |
|
After beating Albury 5-1 the previous week in the first friendly of the season, the U11As continued their good early form with a convincing win against Tadworth, taking the annual Brockham/Tadworth cup.
Both sides looked out of sorts with the 11-a-side game at the start, but Brockham settled much the sooner and, from ten minutes into the game, the pattern was set. The majority of the game was played in the Tadworth half, with Brockham racking up a large corner count. Intermittent Tadworth attacks tested Brockham keepers James Rabbetts (for the first half) and Jamie Luckins, but the Brockham defence was generally sound.
The first half saw three Brockham goals with Sam Lloyd, Jordan Martin and Luke Brightman finishing off attacks launched with pace.
In the second half, Tadworth became increasingly demoralised and goals came thick and fast. An own goal soon after the restart was followed by goals for Martin, Ashley Marshall, Rabbetts, Lloyd, William Pereira and Lewis Wood. The Brockham defence lost their concentration which allowed Tadworth a consolation goal, but the outcome was never in doubt.
Team: Jamie Luckins, George Gomes, Ashley Marshall (c), Chris Walton, Tom Hampshire, Luc Jughroo, Tom Charman, Luke Brightman, Alistair Masson, James Rabbetts, Lewis Wood, William Pereira, Cameron Boychuk, Jordan Martin, Sam Lloyd. |

U11A 9 - 2 NPL B
by Paul Walton |
|
Against NPL, the U11As celebrated their second goal feast of the weekend. NPL had no answer to the pace and skill of Brockham’s attack and, yet again, the Badgers' defence was not tested meaningfully.
Hat trick man Jordan Martin was a persistent threat for Brockham, able to break down the right and cross or shoot at will, supported by good combinations with Luke Brightman and Chris Walton. Martin scored three goals using his pace and accurate finishing; his crosses created additional goals for Brightman and Sam Lloyd and also forced an own goal.
In between, other goals came regularly. Cameron Boychuk was positioned well to knock in a rebound, William Pereira struck a low shot into the corner and Lloyd looped a shot over the keeper from a Walton cross. NPL scored twice when the game was already lost and the Brockham midfield was overcommitted to attack.
In three pre-league friendlies Brockham have scored 24 goals and only conceded four, so they can be confident of scoring freely against lower-league opposition. But life in the Epsom & Ewell Premier League will deliver a more significant test, so there is a lot to look forward to.
Team: Jamie Luckins, Ashley Marshall (c), Chris Walton, Tom Hampshire, Luc Jughroo, Tom Charman, Luke Brightman, Alistair Masson, James Rabbetts, Lewis Wood, William Pereira, Cameron Boychuck, Jordan Martin, Sam Lloyd |
